Jedi Takes it Back to the Basics

My last challenge was a fail. Essentially what happened was that I kept trying to deal with the universe piling drama on me (so I deprioritized fitness) and then my laptop died and I haven’t really been able to get on much. Since my posts tend to be on the long side, mobile and Tapatalk aren’t really good for that. I am getting a computer from work on Monday, but I decided to drop my new stuff online so I’m not late to the challenge. I’ve been keeping up with posts I follow in my email inbox though, so I haven’t forgotten anyone.

 

On the up side, I managed to maintain weight through most of this, even if I haven’t had enough motivation to actually work out. My job has longer hours, so finding the time to work out and the motivation when I’m tired is a challenge. I actually recently started seriously focusing on my eating (no extra workouts involved) and I’ve lost a couple of pounds in the past couple of weeks. I’m fairly proud of myself since the food bit is the hardest part for me.

 

This challenge will be one that brings me back to those very basics.

 

Goal One: No Stupid Eating

 

A- Absolutely zero situations- CON +3 WIS +2

B- One or two situations- CON +2 WIS +1

C- Three or four situations- CON +1 WIS +.5

Fail- More than four situations

 

So what does stupid eating entail for me? Essentially stupid eating is when I eat something(s) because I’m upset about something. It doesn’t mean I can’t eat things that may not be great for me on occasion, it means that I know in advance when that’s going to happen and try not to overeat either in general or when I’m doing something like going to eat out. This is always the biggest problem I’ve had: the wanting to eat when I’m bored and upset. Considering how well I’ve done without my biggest distraction, my computer, I think I can do it. It will be a huge challenge for me right now, but if I can do this during one of the harder seasons of my life I can do it anytime.

 

So what doesn’t stupid eating entail? Occasional dinners out alone or with friends. Planned situations where I’m going to eat more than usual like a wedding or dinner with my grandparents. Having a drink on Friday evenings. It’s about intent. If I’m eating (or overeating) because I’m upset or bored, that’s a strike.

 

Goal Two: Get Walking (or Running)

 

A- 5-6 Days each week getting 10k steps- STA +3 STR +2

B- 5-6 Days for 3 weeks getting 10k steps- STA +2 STR +1

C- 5-6 Days for two weeks or less getting 10k steps- STA +1 STR +.5

Fail- Not getting 10k steps often

 

So I really wanna focus on food for this challenge. But I still need to keep moving. My goal is to make sure that I get my step goal for my FitBit at least 5-6 days per week. This allows for bad weather and traveling. I can get them by simply going on a walk for the last of them, but I can also go running. This gives me options without forcing my brain and body to do more than they can.

 

Goal Three: Keep Tracking Food

 

A- Track food every day- CON +3 WIS +2

B- Track food most days- CON +2 WIS +1

C- Track food for a couple weeks- CON +1 WIS +.5

Fail- Hardly track food at all

 

This is an easy goal. I’ve been tracking what I’ve been eating for months at this point, but I want a goal that’s easily achievable but still useful to what I’m doing. Keeping track of food on my ‘bad’ days is extremely helpful, plus if I start noticing any food sensitivities I have a record of what I’ve been eating.

 

So there it is, one of the simplest challenges I’ve done in a while. Enough flexibility that I can adapt it to my needs, but rigid in the areas that need it. I’m still working on cleaning myself up for my wedding, and the planning is going well. It’s been an adventure and I’m super excited about it! My new job that I got a couple weeks ago is also fantastic, I love my coworkers and it’s a lot of fun.

That's the hope. Most of what I've done has been effective, but I can barely figure out my eating when I'm not exercising. Let alone when I am. So if I focus on that for a while, I might be able to break some bad habits. 

 

There's gonna be some radio silence for a few days from me, I'm going home to go to a concert with my fiance. (ELLIE GOULDING FTW <3). However, my work is loaning me a computer starting Monday so I'll be around more in general. I'm so excited! I've missed having a computer. I miss working on things and watching Netflix and having fun desktop backgrounds.

A large majority of fitness improvements (and weight loss) comes from eating well.  So, focus on that.  A soft focus, as @EricMN points out.  Don't be too hard on yourself while you're working so hard!!

It seems both of us have gone through some of our first failures during our challenges as of late, as well as not being around on NF as much as we used to. Sucks to hear about your laptop, I hate being without a computer.

 

I agree with Tank about simplicity not necessarily being easy, and also usually most effective.

Thanks guys for all of the encouragement :) sorry I've been AWOL, I was at an Ellie Goulding concert this weekend. OMG it was amazing!!! 

 

Today is day one of the challenge, and I can't track steps -_- my Fitbit died last night and I just got back to my charger. Oh well, I get a little leeway for situations like this. I've been tracking my food today and there haven't been any incidents with food. Dinner tonight will end up being a nice yummy Parmesan encrusted tilapia, some peas, and probably a few mashed potatoes. Yummy! Should be getting a laptop from work to borrow tomorrow as well, I can't wait!

So person with laptop is out today, so no laptop. Soon hopefully... Oh well. 

 

Today is an adventure in plans that may or may not happen now or later. My friends wanted to do a mac and cheese night where we all make homemade mac and cheese together and eat it. I think we are doing it tonight, but it's a maybe. If we are, I'll get my steps by walking around beforehand. If the plans fall through, my mom gave me a bunch of delicious little meatloaves. Tomorrow will probably involve me going for a run, but I might just walk. Not sure yet. We shall see.

Whoooo new laptop!

 

First off, 10k steps daily from 5k when you have a desk job is low key unreasonable. Even though I'm going out of my way to walk everywhere I can, I still can't get all of the steps. So my new goal is 6k or more. On the FitBit I have, steps are measured by circles (percentages), and based on my chart, it's been rare for me to get over 5k. So 6k will be challenging but not unreasonable.

 

Using those numbers, I give an update

 

Food issues: 1/0 this week. Sad :/ But I can still do well on this challenge. No more this challenge. None.

Steps: 1/3  so far. I'm a few hundred from getting today's steps so I'll probably go for a walk in a little bit.

Tracking: 3/3 I've kept up with that really well.

Yesterday I got over 14k steps because when my friends and I went to get ice cream, we walked!

 

I've gotten my step goal 3 days this week (2-3 more to go!)

I have only had one food misstep

I have tracked everything, all 4 days this week. Whooo me! 

 

So I quit the allergy medicine that I suspected was giving me the emotional trouble, and guess what?

 

I was right.

 

No more singulair for me. Unfortunately, I got a flat negative on the allergy screening, when it's obvious I have allergies. (allergist said this- basically I react to antihistamines which = allergies but the test didn't work for me so no allergy shots currently). But there's a blood test I can get, but I'm waiting a bit for the benefit of my insurance company. 

 

That's my life right now.

Not bad so far this week! I'm fairly sure I'm going to be having some shark week sorts of problems soon, and I can tell because of my mood and my weight. 

 

I SAW FINDING DORY YESTERDAY OMG THAT MOVIE WAS SO PRECIOUS <3 I also traded dinner for snacky movie theater foods. Oh well.

 

Today's goals are grocery store, steps, returning a library book, and relaxation :)

Well I got my steps today??

 

Urgh, I did it again with the food. I tried, but idk if I got hungry or thirsty or just wanted food but man did I epic fail. I feel awful. I'm about 75% sure it was hormone related, but if my hormonal issues don't show themselves within 24-48 hours, this definitely counts against me. At this point I'm just trying to convince myself to not feel bad and to try again tomorrow.

 

Sometimes I go weeks with everything fine, sometimes I don't. This is so frustrating...

So, today I definitely got my steps. I went for a (badly planned) run and have been doing home chores today. I haven't (yet) had any food problems, and I have been tracking everything. 

 

The rest of my evening is gonna be filled with laundry and making tomorrow's lunch :)

It sounds like you're doing really well overall! Mishaps happen. Like Tank said - that's what respawning is for.

 

Random thought time, sorry not sorry:

People always say "tomorrow is a new day to try again" or whatnot but I like to shorten the time frame a little - the next minute is a new minute in which to try again. It's like refreshing a webpage... you don't have to wait till tomorrow to refresh. You can hit refresh any old time. :panda:

I love this :) Sometimes I struggle with it. I've been trying to be better about it! 

 

(though in this situation I was 'starting over tomorrow' because next step was sleep haha)

Well, in that case that's totally understandable haha! :P 

 

I mainly use that for when I screw up at, like, 10am or something... it's always tempting to say "well, you've already screwed up today, so may as well just write it off and try again tomorrow" and then continue making bad choices the rest of the day... but then I think "nah, refresh button takes, what, 10 seconds? Let's refresh now. Fresh start now."
