Charlotte S Scales Higher Mountains

Kestrel Grey

Recommended Posts

My theme for this challenge is to scale mountains in my area.  I will be ramping up all my goals into bigger, weekly quests.

1. The Fortress (Strength)

Lift 3-4 times a week

Ideally I would be aiming for 4, but I am leaving some flexibility as I am just starting with a new fitness coach.  He probably will want me lifting at least 3 times a week.

2. Mount Baker (Nutrition)

Record everything I eat

Have at least 1 ideal meal a day

Nutrition is staying a daily as my exception to weekly quests, so I am doubling up the steps to increase the challenge. Nutrition continues to be my Achilles heel so I am keeping it daily as I try to figure out a better way to tackle this particular mountain.  'Ideal meal' for me means healthy/unprocessed with half veggies, a good source of protein, and a little complex carbs.

3. The Three Sisters (Communication)

Have a 30 minute conversation in Spanish once a week

This is a scary step up from memorising flashcards! I will be using iTalki to have a conversation with people in Spain once a week. This should really step up my Spanish rapidly (or depress me horribly ha!), and it will give me extra motivation to buckle down on learning my grammar through the week.

4.  Mount Yamnuska (Courage)

Book one appointment with a professional a week

I have an unreasonable fear of mechanics, dental hygienists, gynaecologists, etc.  My sub-conscience is convinced that anyone who is an expert in a field will disdain anyone who is ignorant in it, and will therefor try to either take advantage of me or cause me pain.  This is the time to tackle that fear head on! I will make those appointments that I have been putting off!  My body (and my car) is relying on me and I won't let it down.

I'm with Miaulin and many other Rangers, and am officially starting my Challenge on Monday. Today is a prep day so I can crush week one.

The Fortress

I have my strength workouts written up and scheduled for the week.

Mount Baker

Today was spent grocery shopping and doing some meal prep. I still only have found one complete 'freezer meal' that I like, so that's what I made!  Maybe next week I will hunt down some good recipes that don't involve stew.

My food log is also started.

The Three Sisters

My accounts are made for iTalki and Skype, and I scheduled my first 30 minute trial lesson for this Friday.

Mount Yamnuska

Easing into this challenge; I'm risking my car and wallet first. My car is scheduled for some routine maintenance for Tuesday.

Fun challenge, and great goals. I had heard of Mount Baker and The Three Sisters, but never heard of Mt Yumnuska before. Googled it, and now I know something new.

With this week's mini-challenge, I may actually climb a mountain to get my 5K. :)

Day 1 progress: first strength training done, meals tracked and healthy meal consumed.  It has also turned out to be a good thing that I am taking the car in, since it was acting up yesterday.

Hey ship mate! Love the mountain theme. I hope you get some good news on the car today!

Thanks, it went surprisingly well.

Mount Yamnuska scaled for week one! The car is safely back home, I am pretty sure it was looked after very well. Bonus: I didn't get called "sweetie" or talked down to once.  I think I am now brave enough to tackle the dentist next week.

The Fortress: second weight-lifting workout done. I was short on time and had to cut out a set.

Mount Baker: still on track

Three Sisters: I just realised that Friday is here soon, and I don't feel ready!  Madly reviewing my Spanish and pretty sure that I have forgotten everything.

Mount Yamnuska: I'll do the calling/appointment thing tomorrow.

waiting anxiously to hear how the Spanish went today!

It was awkward! But still a lot of fun. We had a conversation about the little things people are supposed to talk about (family, job, weather). I didn't realise how much I rely on seeing the words instead of hearing them, and even when I understood what she was saying I had trouble figuring out how to construct a sentence to reply. But I have a starting point now to grow from. Three months to go until Spain!

Week 1 recap:

1. The Fortress (Strength): Complete!

I weight-lifted three days this week. The full plan that I was given takes almost two hours between waiting for equipment, etc, so I have cut it down to 5-6 exercises per session at 3 reps each. That keeps it at a doable level for both time and energy.

2. Mount Baker (Nutrition): Complete!

Focusing on adding healthy food is working much better than focusing on cutting out unhealthy.

3. The Three Sisters (Communication): Complete!

My next conversation is booked for next Friday, and I am working on giving answers for common questions.  One thing I started doing is writing simple journal entries in Spanish.

4.  Mount Yamnuska (Courage): Complete!

I am still braced for the dentist next week... *shudders*

How did the first half of this week treat you so far?

Going okay. Going great in knocking down my challenges, but I am not getting any sleep! My problem when I work nights is that I feel like sleeping all day is wasted time, when there is so much that I want to get done. That and I have a parrotlet who knows there is someone home, and doesn't appreciate being ignored. I was informed by the internet when I bought him that parrotlets were quiet birds... the internet lied.  He's lucky he is cute or some days I would smother him.

I am awake again, and off to the terrifying dentist in an hour. Last time I cried in the chair for no reason (it was a routine cleaning!) so I don't have to be too stoic to beat that. Stupid unreasonable phobias.

Then off to the gym.

Then to cook something healthy for dinner.

Then (hopefully) back to bed for a couple more hours before going back to work this evening.
