Learning Java

Recommended Posts

Hey all!  Let me start with this.  I've been in the Business/IT field for going on 10 yrs now.  For those 10 years i've been coding on mainframe systems...yes, they do still exist.  I've recently started going back to school to finish my B.A. Business - Information Technology Management (some schools call it Management Information Systems).  I eventually plan on moving forward to an MBA in the same study area.  While all of this is amazing, i've been wanting to learn more Java as i see more and more openings for it.  Since most all of my work experience is on the mainframe i know so little about open systems code.  What do you guys recommend as a good starting place?  Any specific resources?  Anyone willing to work with me?

Thanks in advance!

Awesome.  Thanks Plitog.  I'll start checking them out.

Make sure you're looking up resources for Java 8. That's the most modern version, and you're probably going to see more postings that want you to be familiar with some of the peculiarities there.

Here's a good tutorial on Stream: http://winterbe.com/posts/2014/07/31/java8-stream-tutorial-examples/

And just a good walkthrough of some Java 8 specific stuff here: http://winterbe.com/posts/2014/03/16/java-8-tutorial/

I hope your quest to learn Java is going well. I just started using it regularly a few months ago. I'm really more of a Python person, but Java has been an interesting departure. I'm looking forward to delving deeper. Let me know how it's been going for you! :)
