Winnie The Pooh
Love this link and the question itself and all the advises that are pouring in. I am myself 260lbs 31yr old and 5.6" . I have no clue what I'm supposed to be doing with my body and there is no sign of reducing this weight. I am so fascinated about MA. But not sure if my body can take it. Maybe I'll look for those introductory class anyway. Thanks Dragon Lady... You did the job for me... And thanks to everyone who have shared their insights 🙏 1 Quote Link to comment

cn3wton
I want to say that this thread is just what I was looking for. I've always wanted to get into Martial Arts but sadly my options are quite limited. Especially now. Ive been following some simple stuff online to get back into. With kicks I do them very slow as I have surprisingly good flexibility despite my weight. I understand that form wont be perfect and being careful not to overextend. But this thread has been really inspiring. 1 Quote "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." - J.R.R Tolkien "Progress, not perfection." But this thread has been really inspiring. I've been solely doing Muay Thai videos at home for about 10 months now (with occasional check-ins with my old coach) due to lockdown. It's actually been my primary form of exercise (with some cardio/kettlebell days) for the last year basically (and I'm down 25ish lbs since). One benefit to the pandemic has been a lot of instruction has moved online. Depending on which martial art you are interested in pursuing, there are plenty of opportunities to begin learning at home. Karate katas, boxing (with a bag, or shadow) both come to mind as things that can be learned at a beginner level using videos. Others like Jiu-Jitsu or Aikido that require a partner, or HEMA/Kendo/Kyudo that require equipment and closer instruction, might be a bit trickier though. 1 Quote [Level ??] Rurik, Templar-Marshal Class: Paladin of the Order of the Sacred Flame (Conquest Paladin/Champion) BRUTALITY 11 | FINESSE 10 | VIGOR 11 | INSIGHT 14 | WILL 13 Equipment: Leather armor, questing longsword, and adventurer's pack with alchemist's kit. Ingagr
I'm a living evidence that it is possible to start practicing MAs overweighted and middle aged. Just talk to your sabon, sensei, etc and be sure he/she will teach and train you keeping the weight in mind, so you can protect your knees. Quote Weight (Kg): 142 --> 127.3 Link to comment
Franks
When I was 13and a half I was 5'8" and weighed 85 kg. I joined a judo class for a few weeks. I was pitted against a 20 year old black belt. He was 6'1'' and 60kg. I beat him. He went crashing to the ground. What a victory Quote Link to comment
Briar Fang
I'm thankful for everyone's contribution to this thread! I read it last year and developed a plan to try martial arts, but I suffered a significant injury before starting. A couple of weeks ago I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing and I'm loving it. 1 Quote Link to comment
