Out of breath at elevation:tips for training at altitude?

Recommended Posts

I was run/walking 5Ks at sea level a couple of times a week, with my average mile about 13 minutes give or take, and my legs got tired before my lungs/heart did. I'm back in Utah and I'm pretty sure it's the elevation that's killing me, because I'm gasping for breath and my heart is pounding within distances that were easy at sea level...any tips on training at altitude??

I'd say just keep fighting. Most people altitude train with a mask that restricts airflow thus simulating the actual situation you have. I suspect it will just suck for a bit. FIGHT, hydrate, be patient.

Really there's no substitute for time.  You need to let your bloodstream build up hemoglobin density and there's nothing but time that will do that.  Maybe eat more red meat, so there's something in the way of building blocks to make it out of?  But that's just conjecture.

Solid advice would be to run until you're breathless, then walk fast until you're recovered, then run some more, and repeat.  Keep at it and it will become easier.

Hey guys! Just wanted to update: it's still hard, but its getting lots better! My stamina and my pace are improving, and I feel less like a fish out of water. Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

And it always will be. Running is anything but easy. Hard is good. Painful, not so much! Congrats on keeping up the fight!!
