Chapter 1: Rebel Five Outruns Zombies!

Ranger Five

Recommended Posts

Out of Character Post - Introduction

Hi Rangers! This'll be my first challenge with the Rangers, and my second challenge overall. This challenge is going to be a written a little differently from most, so let's get right into it.

The first thing about this challenge that's worth noting is that I'll be writing most of the posts in character. In character posts will be in green. Once a week or so, I'll be writing an out-of-character recap of the week, but outside that, I'll be letting Rebel Five take over. Fellow Rangers and anyone else reading are free to respond in or out of character. In character, this thread is Rebel Five's personal blog, and all out of character posts, including this one, don't exist. Your character can be anywhere from inside Abel Township (the main setting of the Rebel Five series) to halfway across the world; it doesn't bother me. As long as it doesn't directly contradict anything written down, it'll work out. Naturally, Rebel Five won't reply to OOC posts. But I might; you can call me Jay if you need to differentiate Jay the writer from Rebel Five the character. So I'm writing in character; but what will I be writing about? I'll be writing about a zombie apocalypse setting, with a lot of inspiration from Zombies, Run! the app, but my own plotline. So don't worry about spoilers outside the first mission. If I've done my job, you won't be able to tell what's from the app and what's not unless you go through the app's story yourself. Most of what I use from Zombies, Run! will be characters and the basic premise, not the story itself.

Eighteen months ago, the world was overrun by a zombie plague. The plague came in two forms; airborne, and fluid-borne. Fortunately, a small amount of the population was immune to the airborne form of the virus, which spread across humanity with terrifying speed. Civilisation crumbled, society fell apart, and those who were left tried to scrabble together some sort of plan from the wreckage.

Rebel Five, a soldier in the Australian army, has spent this time in Mullins military base. Being comprised largely of young, healthy people, Mullins had more people immune to the airborne virus than most, and they were able to contain the infected, removing them from the base and sending them out into the ruins. It was a dreadful time, but because of these decisions, Mullins was able to survive. It has ample supplies, since it was designed to cater to ten times the number of soldiers who now live there, but there aren't enough soldiers and bullets to make any sort of attempt at reclaiming the wilderness, or a large-scale attempt at fighting back. Rebel Five, like most of the soldiers, has done very little except exist over the last eighteen months.

This is about to change. For those of you who've played Zombies Run, you know what happens next. For those of you who haven't; don't worry. As mentioned earlier, the first mission will be pretty thoroughly spoiled, but other than that, you should be right. If you're planning to go through the app someday and can't bear any spoilers at all, turn back. Alternatively, you could go download the free app, and play through the first mission! It's quite the gripping tale, if I say so myself.

Goals:

My goals and Rebel Five's goals are the same, though Rebel Five will have some in-character substitutions. These will be mentioned in the story by the time the challenge kicks off.

Goal 1: Lift weights at the gym up to thrice per week, using the Stronglifts program.
Minimum: 6 workouts. Solid: 8 workouts. Great: 10 workouts. Excellent: 12 workouts.

Goal 2: Run up to thrice per week with Zombies, Run!

Minimum: 6 runs. Solid: 8 runs. Great: 10 runs. Excellent: 12 runs.

Goal 3: Keep up with my uni schedule.

Minimum and above: All assignments done on time.
Solid: All work done by the end of the challenge.

Great: All work done at the end of each week.

Excellent: All work done at the end of each day. (1 off day per week permitted)

Meet at least "Solid" on all three standards: Some well-fitting shorts, usable for running.
As above, plus two "Great" or one "Excellent": My choice of a heart rate monitor or a set of fractional plates.

Currently I've just started Stronglifts, and I'm running 4 km (2.5 miles) 3 times a week. My best time is 5:11 min/km, setting me up for about a 26-minute 5k time if Zombies Run is accurate. I'll be checking for accuracy within the next week before the challenge begins, running a road that I know is about 4.88 km (3.05 miles). I live at house number 244, and in more rural areas, 1 number = 10 meters, so emergency services can find houses easily. So if Zombies Run says the run's between 4.8 and 5 km, that's accurate enough to go by until I do an actual race in November. Uni-wise, I'm studying Computer Science, and just entering my second year.

Well, that's enough about me for now; let's let Rebel Five take over!

Author’s Note; The following post contains spoilers for the first mission of Zombies, Run.

Dear Reader,

Today was pretty crappy. I got a rocket launcher shot at me, almost got killed twice, and now I’m stranded in a tiny settlement miles away from home.

To cut a long story short, I pissed off an officer, so I got sent on guard duty for the supply chopper to Abel Township, a little town about forty klicks from Mullins. It’s such a boring, routine job that they don’t even arm you. Zoms can’t fly, and Abel isn’t about to upset the golden goose that lays MRE’s every month. And then all that went to hell.

A rocket launcher was shot at us. Who the hell has firepower like that in the middle of a zombie-infested wasteland? I’m as clueless as you. I grabbed a chute and jumped, seconds before the chopper crashed into the ground. Fortunately I was only four k’s from Abel, so I ditched the chute and ran like hell before the zoms investigated the noise. I collected some supplies for the town, since their doctor told me they might not let me in otherwise, and now here I am. Abel Township. Population...not many.

As for my name, they’re calling me Rebel Five. Rebel because I don’t have a defined job like the rest of them, having dropped out of the sky and all, and Five because it looks like I’ll be taking on the duties of the old Runner Five, who got cornered by zoms a few days ago in an abandoned hospital; the same hospital I ran through to collect supplies.

I’m staying in Runner Five’s old place. It’s a brilliant stroke of luck. I’m a short guy, so I’m about her size, and she had some pretty great quarters. I’ve got a nicer bed than at Mullins and some good gear, even if it isn’t my first choice of colors. She even had an old laptop, which they seem to have forgotten about. I don’t plan to remind them. They can pick it up in a few days when I’m out of here. She must have been one hell of a runner to be assigned an item this valuable. It even has RoffleNet, which is how I’m writing this. It’s spotty as hell though; Samuel told me it could take hours to get a connection through. It goes out all the time.

Runner Seven, head of Runners, told me I’d be having a bit of a chat with him and maybe one of the other heads in a day or two. They’ll find out what I’m good at, and assign me some work. I told them there might not be much point, since I’ll be out of here as soon as Mullins sent another chopper. Runner Seven seemed displeased at this, but I let him know that I’d be happy to help out where I could, considering they saved my ass and all.

All in all, I guess it could be worse. I’m alive. I may not have my regular journal, but I can always write a post or two here. I’m reasonably comfortable, and after a couple of days of doing some light labor, I’ll be on a chopper back to Mullins. It’s actually almost nice to get out of the rut, now that I know everything’s going to turn out fine.

Rebel Five, signing out.

A thought occurred to me about posting in and out of character, if you use a different color for in character posts we will be able to visually tell instantly which is which and avoid a lot of confusion, that seems to work for a lot of folks.

That's a fantastic idea. Much easier and less clumsy than writing "OOC" all the time. I'll implement it as soon as I find the right color. I'll have to play around with them a bit. Being a soldier and a ranger, green seems like Rebel Five's best color. But the light green is eye-searing, and the dark green isn't as visible as I'd like when you don't have the black text to contrast with it. One idea I'm thinking of is to bold all in-character posts, and underline anything that needs special emphasis. That makes the color much more obvious at a glance.

Does anyone have any color suggestions? I think bold green will work just fine, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears. After all, Tank, you gave me the color idea, which was way better than my IC/OOC divide :) Clearly the Rangers know their stuff!

Today, I met with Runner Seven and Warrior One, to discuss the future. It wasn't good.

Runner Seven is the head of Runners at Abel. He's got brown hair, in about his thirties. He's average height, with a runner's build, as one would expect. Warrior One is the head of Warriors. I'll go into more detail on the different jobs at Abel later, but Warriors focus on strength. Warrior One looks badass, there's really no other way to describe her. She's got blonde hair, is a couple of inches taller than Seven, and looks like she could kill a man just by looking at him. It's honestly quite intimidating.

"So what did you want to talk about, sir?" I asked.

"You can just call me Runner Seven, or Seven, Five." Seven said.

"Why are you guys all known by numbers? And why are you calling me Five?" I asked.

"We'll get to that in a minute, mate." Seven said. "The reason I wanted to meet with you was to tell you some bad news. Unfortunately, Mullins won't be sending a chopper for you."

I knew it. As soon as he said it, I felt like kicking myself for not realising it earlier. I closed my eyes and raised a palm to my forehead. "The rocket launcher." I said.

"Bingo." Seven said. "Unfortunately, Mullins won't risk sending another chopper until that's dealt with."

"So what do we do?" I said.

"There's nothing we can do." One said. "Anyone with a friggin' rocket launcher is bound to have guns as well. We can't send our guys five k's into the wastelands armed with pistols to try and take down someone like that. We'd get our asses killed. We stay the hell away from the area, that's what we do."

"In short, I'm stuck here. Possibly indefinitely." I said.

One raised an eyebrow, and spoke. "Unless you feel like running forty kilometers to Mullins, yeah."

"I know this must be hard, Five." Seven said. "Unfortunately, our radio doesn't reach more than five kilometers, so we can't make contact with anyone at Mullins base. So even if we were somehow able to clear out the threat, there'd be no way to tell Mullins we'd done so. Our only way of getting messages to Mullins is through the helicopter that lands here every month. So it looks like you're one of us now. We have another pressing problem, however, and we need your help to address it."

"What's that?" I asked.

"Mullins gave us some supplies every month. Food, medicine, that kind of thing. We've been somewhat reliant on that monthly supply drop to keep us afloat, which means we need to get more supplies to cover the shortfall." Seven said.

"How do we do that?" I said.

"We run, Five. Almost everyone in Abel Township goes on supply runs." Seven said. "We go out into the wastes, find whatever we can, and bring it back here. I'm the head of Runners; running is our specialty. But everyone does at least some running, except for the sick, injured, and essential personnel. Now, we'll need you to pick a specialty, so we know what kind of work to assign you. Our specialties are-"

"Wait, wait, hold on a bloody minute!" I interrupted. "You mean to say that you go out into the wastelands? That's where the zoms are!"

"It's how we survive, Five." Seven said. "If you want to be a part of Abel, you'll have to do the same. Believe me, plenty of us are in the same or worse shape than you. You're a young soldier. You'll do fine. Our radio operator, Samuel, will be with you every step of the way. I believe you two have met. When you crash-landed, you ran for Abel, evaded the zoms, and got some supplies along the way. That's all you have to do."

There was more in the conversation, but I've written enough for today. Suffice it to say for now that I'll be going out running, in the wasteland, two or three times a week. I really don't want to, but I've seen Abel Township. They're a small community, and according to Seven, without those supplies from Mullins, they're hanging by a thread. They don't have room for a freeloader, and I'm not going to be one. Despite their doctor being a colossal tool and blackmailing me into collecting supplies while I was running for my life, I'm starting to see why she did it. Life is hard here. Not like Mullins.

So I'm just going to have to run. Even if every morning since my mad dash for Abel, I woke up in a cold sweat, dreaming of glowing red zombie eyes, mad with feral hunger, as my legs got heavier and heavier...

Rebel Five, signing out.

So the rest of the conversation involved figuring out my MOS, though I guess it's just an OS here in Abel. Seven told me about the different specialties that Abel has set up, that make up the first word of your name in Abel. Runner Seven is a Runner, Warrior One is a Warrior, and so on. The specialisations are:

Warrior - Warriors focus on the defenses of Abel township, and the demanding physical labor it requires. Digging trenches, building walls, putting up fences, and so on. They focus on strength, and only do short supply runs. They usually train with weights.

Runner - Also known as Scout. Runners focus on runs, of course, especially long distance ones that cover 10 k's or more. When someone wants to check on New Canton, they send a runner to do the 16 kilometer round trip. Runners also tackle a lot of the special missions that are required by Abel, such as distracting zombies, helping to clear out nests, and collecting important or valuable items. Runners naturally train running almost exclusively.

Adventurer - Adventurers are mappers and explorers. If there's some terrain that nobody's been in before, it's an adventurer that goes in to check it out. Abel only has one adventurer, Adventurer Two. One of the last things Janine did before the internet went down for good was to get a detailed Google Maps scan of the area, which cuts down on the need for mapping and exploring. Since our radio only goes out to five klicks at the moment, it's dangerous to explore further afield. Since there's still plenty of supplies within that five kilometer radius, we stick to the safe areas.

Assassin - Stealth-focused. Sometimes, running isn't particularly applicable, especially indoors when it's easy to get stuck. That's where an Assassin comes in. Assassins are good at sneaking around, climbing, parkour, and other skills necessary to evade zombies in urban environments when raw speed and endurance can't get the job done. Assassins train with rings and bodyweight skills.

Ranger - Hybrids. Usually a combination of Runner and something else, Rangers are jack-of-all-trades members of Abel, with skills suited to multiple groups, or who simply get bored doing the same thing all the time. Rangers act as the glue to hold struggling units together. If there aren't enough of any given specialisation at the moment, Rangers step in to cover the gaps. Rangers split their training focus according to the specialisations they hybridise in.

Monk - Fighters. These people actually fight zombies. Despite the name Monk, most Monks are actually gun experts. Hand-to-hand combat with zombies is insane, since you can break their arm and they'll keep on coming, and the risk of infection is very high. Nobody does it any more, though apparently a brother-sister duo in Abel still spar with each other nearly every day, just in case their skills are ever needed. Monks train like rangers, but less often, as they spend much of their focus improving with weapons instead.

Druid - Non-combatants, but important ones. All essential personnel are druids, the only specialisation that never has to run. Some druids do run, but they don't specialise in it. That said, sometimes these druids are the most important of all. If we didn't have any druids, we'd fall apart. Druids like Samuel, Janine, and the Major are crucial to the operation of Abel Township. Druids specialise in their jobs, and sometimes do physical training for health, a backup plan, or for the occasional duties non-essentials are required to perform.

I suppose the Major is a fantasy buff, given the flavor of the specialties. Still, it works. We had a bit of a chat about what Abel needs, and what I might be good at, but what it came down to was that Abel is always short of personnel for a ton of different jobs. Since I'm young and in halfway decent shape, I can be trained into whatever Abel needs. Thus, I pretty much ended up as a Ranger by default. I don't mind. Samuel and Runner Seven saved my life when the chopper crash-landed. I owe them big. I'll do what's needed to keep Abel standing, and it's people alive.

So apparently my name is Ranger Five now. I asked why we all went by numbers instead of names in Abel, except for essential personnel. As soon as I asked it, I realised the answer, and wished I'd never thought of it. The reason that essential personnel like Samuel and Janine get to have names is that it's okay for people to get attached to them. Whenever someone goes outside Abel, there's a small but very real chance they won't come back. Essential personnel are the only ones who don't have to run. Then they told me about Runner Five, and how I ended up with the number Five. How she ran into a hospital just a week ago, searching for supplies. The zombies, flanking her. How she was one of the fastest runners Abel had, but all her speed meant nothing when she had nowhere left to run.

And tomorrow, I'm going out there.

Ranger Five, signing out.

So, some out of character notes; I named myself Rebel Five because I thought I had to spend the first challenge with the rebels. Turns out it takes 150 posts to be able to change your name, so I'm stuck with Rebel Five for the time being. I should be able to officially change my name in a month or two, once my post count increases. Good motivation to interact with all of you fine folk :) That said, as far as I'm concerned, Rebel Five is now Ranger Five. I'll keep the challenge name as is, to prevent confusion. Hopefully I can change my name by next challenge; that only requires about 3 posts each day. If I keep active on the forums, that should be easily achievable. Consider it an OOC bonus goal :)

Ranger Five spent today writing the backlog of exposition that's been dumped on him during his second day at Abel Township. That means he isn't able to report the workouts we've done, but I can.

Bodyweight: 60 kg (132 lb). I'm really, really short, okay? (5'4-5'5!)

Tuesday:

Squat - 5x5 25 kg (55 lb) - Easy/medium

Bench Press - 5x5 22.5 kg (50 lb) - Easy

Barbell Row - 5x5 22.5 kg (50 lb) - Easy

Thursday:

Squat - 5x5 27.5 kg (60.5 lb) - Medium

Overhead Press - 5x5 22.5 kg (50 lb) - Medium

Deadlift - 1x5 45 kg (99 lb) - Easy/medium

I also went running on Wednesday. I went for a run that I knew was about 4.88 km in length, in order to calibrate my GPS. The GPS for Zombies, Run said I ran 5.12 km, so it says I ran 5% longer than I actually did. In total, I ran 4.88 km in 26:28, beating my old PB of 28:37 for that road. That puts me at 27:07 5k pace, which I'm pretty happy with. I'd like to get it down to 25-26 minutes for the 5k race in November.

As for my running plans, Jack Daniels (the running coach, not the bourbon) suggests sticking to a certain training stimulus for four weeks before increasing it. So for this challenge, I'll be running 5 km per run, ideally 3 days a week. Next challenge, I'll up that to 6 km, or add a fourth day, whichever I prefer. I'm not going to get fancy with paces or anything just yet. I'll run as fast or as slow as I feel like going, as long as I'm running above my Easy pace. Since my Easy pace is about 33:00-37:00 per 5k, I don't think I'll have any trouble with that. In fact, I'd have a very difficult time slowing down that much! I will eventually need to change my workouts up, doing some workouts very slow and others very fast, but for now I'm happy with a more laissez-faire approach towards pacing.

For any experienced runners in the forum; am I being totally stupid here, or at a ~27:00 5k level, can I make decent gains by just running, no matter what I'm doing, as long as I don't get injured? Will I get injured if I run most of my runs at a moderate (~30:00 5k) pace, and do an "all-out" 5k once every week or two? It's worth noting that for me, all-out is not quite 100% intensity. I need to develop the mental toughness to push myself hard enough to actually achieve a full intensity 5k; I've never felt the urge to throw up or collapse after a run, even after doing what felt like an all-out effort.

Lastly, browsing Spezzy's challenge, I learnt about the phenomenon known as Ranger Brain. Truly, I have found my people. The battle against Ranger Brain for me has been long and hard. I only recently gave up karate, accepting that there's simply no way I can lift 3x per week and run 3x (eventually 4x) per week at a good intensity, AND do karate at the same time. Of course, as my fitness and confidence improves, I'll start wanting to do more again. The battle against Ranger Brain never ends, for it is within ourselves. Deep down...we are all Ranger Brain.
