Chris-Tien vs. the Dog Days of Summer

Recommended Posts

Last challenge went really well for the first three weeks, and then some stuff at work really got under my skin.  Some bouts of emotional eating combined with the long 4th of July weekend bumped up my weight by about a pound.  I really need to take measurements because my clothes continue to get looser as I bike and run and walk.

Mid-summer, like mid-winter, just doesn’t have a lot of events to look forward to enjoying.  There are a lot of things happening near the end of August, but these upcoming weeks have the potential to really drag in the proverbial “dog days of summer”.  And when I get bored, I tend to eat more than I should. When it’s hot and muggy, it’s tempting to stay inside and avoid any sort of workout.  But not this summer!!!

My main goal for the next challenge is to stay in control of my eating and keep in balance with my activity.

1) Plan meals, including fun foods and treats

2) Stay in points budget

3) Get 83 points worth of exercise each week (how many points does swinging a sword for a 1/2 hour get me??)

Have some fun

4)  Start archery (target) and practice on rest days

5)  OCR training (Dirt in the Skirt round 2 redux)

Summer ...... bring it, bitches!!!

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.

I'm back in the saddle and starting OCR training with a run broken up for a little body weight training.  2.5 miles at 15.3 minutes per mile plus:

  • 2 burpees
  • 2 pushups (elevated)
  • 2 situps

at the 1/2 way mark and at the end.  I took a few really short walk breaks because it was hot, and I'd already walked 11K steps.  You see, there is this augmented reality game out that involves cute "monsters" that you catch in funny little red and white balls ......  I blame it on my daughter ......

I've planned some of my meals ahead of time.  Breakfast and lunch have fallen into a rut.  No wonder I'm bored!!!  But I did plan for a mojito last night (yum!!) and an ice cream cone this afternoon with friends.  The ice cream was totally worth it .... made by our agricultural and food science students from the milk/cream that they get from the resident dairy herd.  Yea, there are some advantages to working on the ag/vet school campus.

But, I'm staying in my points budget, partially because of the steps I'm getting in the aforementioned game. :nonchalance:  When the frenzy dies down, I may have to make some sacrifices in the food department again.  I have often said that I run in order to eat.  Afterall, what is life without bacon???

(And how did that cat sneak into a thread about dogs????)

No progress on archery yet, although Mr. Wizard says he wants to take up archery too.  So the plan is to get an early birthday present for me this weekend -- a starter bow and associated stuff.  His bow is also part of the present so that I'll have someone to go to the archery range with me.

If components of my SCA garb arrive in time, it sounds like there will be classes offered at the competition at the end of the month.  I haven't been shooting in decades, and I think some coaching would not be a bad idea.

That Pokemon craze? Happy hunting! As soon as the archery lessons take off, think how quick you can hunt those little "monsters" and "shoot" them down! Otherwise I'm here for ALL the things! Happy Early Birthday (with the bow and other gear)!

I don't know if I'm terrible at archery because of my great big bushy beard or if I'm just terrible at archery, but I like the idea of archery.  :P

Also, a half-hour of swordplay is a rather intensive workout.  Definitely worthy of maximum points!

Hi there, fellow mini-challenger popping in to introduce myself. I'd love to join in with the dog gifs here, but my mastery of the forums does not yet extend to inserting them. Though I'm sure I did it once before... off topic, sorry.

Anyway, good luck with the archery. Your challenge looks fun! (and inspiring. Going to have to give archery a go one day... ) :)

Oh, yea.  Archery was fun, although I have to work on keeping my elbow from rotating up (and getting seriously snapped by the bowstring).  It's an expensive hobby.  We got basic, beginner bows, a dozen arrows, a quiver, arm brace, and shooting gloves.  After struggling to string and unstring the recurve bow, I ordered a bow stringer .... and a book on adult beginner archery.

I actually have a youth bow (54" and 29 lbs of draw).  After 1/2 hour, I was getting tired, but I was consistently hitting the target at 20 feet.  Mr. Wizard gave up on 20 feet and dropped down to 10 for now (he has a 62" 40 lb draw .... appropriate for a much larger person).

pDSP1-19918759p275w.jpg

I did speedwork (8 short intervals punctuated with walking) and a little strength training, but my arms and legs ran out of juice pretty quickly:

Goblet squats 15lb x 10

One arm rows: 15lb x 10

Elevated pushups: 5

Overhead triceps extension: 15lb x 10

Grip strength x 10

Ouch, that looks sore, but you are just amazing at what all you manage to do. From cycling to archery, running and BW in between! :loyal:

Yeap, it's more sore today than yesterday, although the bruising doesn't look as bad.

I'm in that golden age where I don't have responsibility for kids (or grandkids) but have lots of energy.
