karinajean tries a CUT MONTH

Recommended Posts

who has two thumbs and totally made a conscious decision to NOT get out of bed for a run this morning?

THIS GIRL!

*cough* oops.

my right hip and right shoulder are totally out of wack. I ahd a chiro appt on monday, and have one tonight, but that was a nice easy excuse to not run - even though I know that my hip feels better when I'm running more regularly.

also while I'm complaining, my fingers on my right hand that I jammed a couple of months ago are STILL sore, and I feel like I keep injuring them. there's a sports medicine doctor at my local practice that I am going to make an appt with today also.

Sorry about the injuries.  I've found that finger ones take FOREVER to heal.  It's also a common climber problem to injure a finger, rest it a little, start climbing again before it has fully healed, and then get into this horrible injury spiral where it never heals.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure that there's really much a doctor can do to fix the finger injuries, other than showing you how to tape the fingers and telling you to rest them.

Heh, it took me a good few 3 re-injuries before I learned my lesson... At least I think I've learned it now...

How on earth did he do that? Almost all of mine are weedles, which is so annoying! And for a while, all I was getting were 2k eggs, so I had to hatch them all before I had room for any bigger ones. I haven't seen a 10k in a really long time.

Oh that's annoying! My 5km usually turn out to be pretty good, my 10km ones have been so few I can't judge them.

I really hate how bad that game is at actually tracking distance. I usually miss at least 1/3 of the actual distance I walk/run.

I have been seriously absentee. Firstly, I have been working kind of stupid hard on a few things. not fitness things! but on wednesday I was at work until after 10PM. it was the pits. Thursday was my big day starting at a construction site, driving into nyc and taking an impt conference call from my car on the corner of the street, and then a cooper union alumni event until late. I got home at 11or so that night also. Friday AM I was pooped and not interested in running, barely made it to work and had burning eyes from being overly contact-lensed all week. Friday night was a knitting party and lots of food, including 2 kinds of dessert and champagne / st. germain cocktails. Sat. was dojo sat with all weapons classes, and then we hosted birthday party for Twelve (now Thirteen!) at our house with my in-laws and his mom. bubbly wine was had. also cake. and then sunday was raining SO super hard - we did do a pokewalk in the pouring rain but other than that it was a pretty slow day.

For food, I did fine on wednesday and thursday, but friday and sat. ate way too much. Sunday I was in-budget, but we ate out at Chili's and the food was SO salty that I am confident my higher weight today is due to salt bloat/water weight. it was like, burn my tongue salty.

[[CONFIDENTIAL TO EVERYONE: DOING A NON-CUT THE KARINAJEAN WAY DOES NOT LEAVE ANY ROOM FOR BUBBLY WINE. JUST TO BE CLEAR HERE.]]

for protein I did really good on every day except sunday, where I was just under 100g.

for exercise, I did not much. I mean, I had dojo sat and a long walk on sunday. but not the running schedule like I had intended.

I'm kind of calling week 2 a BIG BUST.

although, in pokemon go news, after a pretty slow beginning of the week I popped a lucky egg and leveled up like, seriously, dozens of pidgeys and weedils and went from an early L 17 to an early L 19 on sunday. and now I'm struggling because the pokemon seem to be running away from me! argh! I did some research and it looks like there are some pokemon who are programmed to run faster, so you only get to throw 1 or 2 balls at them. I need to figure out which are like that, so I can always lead with a great ball.

ALSO, my husband and Thirteen were talking about how many pokemon they'd caught yesterday, and I checked and I had caught 570 to their 200 and change. My husband said... "wow, no wonder you're doing so much better than we are." I was like "YOU GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL, it's game CANON."

MID-CHALLENGE CHECK IN

MY ONE GOAL:

Do all the things I was going to do anyway, but cut by NOT EATING BACK CALORIES.

exception is dojo sat. only if I do full crazy dojo workout.

--> implications of this will be some kind of a cut, kinda, but not a crazy intense one.

really good on this, except for the end of week 2. sadface.

large.caloriesin_080116.JPG.cc628ed5e11d

at the same time experiment with macros a little. try to fine tune diet a little more healthily

--> implications of this: will be less beer during the week, for sure. less sweets. so, that's kind of a cut.

I have been trying to work on protein to stay at around 120g. I am, on a weekly average, doing great on this - but there's still a couple of days every week where I am not hitting it.

large.072416nutrientsall.JPG.b6bdfa173cblarge.073116nutrientsall.JPG.cce1ef76c1b

how will I tell it's working? UM I DON'T KNOW YET.

--> implications of this: need to collect regular measurements. weight is weight. also tape measure 1-2x a week. photos weekly.

weight is weight.

medium.cutmonth_080116.JPG.3ee043ebd130f

honestly, you can totally see a little dip there that was WRECKED by the excesses of Friday and Sat. of this week. remember! no room for bubbly wine in a non-cut cut! even if you're doing it the karinajean way!

also of note, I was not doing all the things I was going to do anyway. I didn't run at all, I only went to 1 tkd (plus dojo sat, which wasn't as crazy as it could have been), and no yoga or hooping. so, that could also have an implication on that uptick as well.

I need to do another couple of skulpt measurements - I only have the one from 7/21. um. so I totally missed this during week 2.

I did download Hazard's amazeballs measuring spreadsheet, and put in some numbers. for the rest of the challenge I want to make those tape measures a better daily habit.

all in all, I started strong, but week 2 was kind of a total bust.

sometimes a bust is good, though, because it helps you focus on the rest of the challenge. so, much like the proton, I remain positive.

wow, ok now. WEEK 3 IS SO EAGER.

OK WEEK 3.

after week 2 I feel recommitted to my original goals. that's a great feeling! it's nice to feel like my goals are actually going to accomplish something instead of just being something to plow through.

I took a hard look at my vacation schedule and my 10K goals and INKED IN my running calendar, so I can't miss from here on out. well, maybe there's some room for shifting a run around next week but after that I'm pretty much locked in. It's going to be a very steep volume increase during the gap week and week 1 of next challenge, and the first 2 weeks of september will have a lot of miles to be run because I'm going to have a 5 mile run the first weekend, the next weekend is an 8K I'm signing up for,and then I need to squeeze in a 5.5 mile run to ramp up to distance before my first 10K during the 3rd week of Sept.

also J. who used to be on the boards and I can't remember for the life of me now what her name was, well, she referred me to Deanne Love's Hoop Love Your Body August challenge (which starts today peeps, if you are interested!) which is a fairly intense hooping exercise program. Basically it's made up of hooping drills, tabata workouts, some flow practice in the form of song dance parties, and general fitness like squats and skipping ropes. because hooping better has been a long-standing casual goal of mine, and because I am a NUT, I decided to sign up for that too. because the challenge is all about fitting in some kind of daily practice, I inked that in too. every day I'm going to do a tabata for hoop drills, and I decided on my run this morning that in order to get maximum awesomeness out of it, I would do the other challenge components on my TKD days when I don't have runs scheduled. after this week I'll see how it goes and ink in the next couple of weeks.

So here we go!

 b9c03d35f9f8b271f1070290856093dd.jpg

related to food, we are having a rough time with meal planning right now so I signed us up for The Purple Carrot. It's a vegan meal service (it's one that Mark Bittman works for now, he left the NYTimes apparently), which will make my protein goals a little tougher to achieve. But, I'm feeling a little overloaded with the meats and feeling so bored with the status quo stuff we've been buying so. we got our first box last week and cooked 2 meals from it and yo, it is a LITTLE more cooking intense than blue apron was. like, for our 2nd meal I had to make BREAD. I mean, it was like a biscuit, but still. all of the reviews noted that it calls for a food processor often - which we do have, but I hate washing, and we managed our first recipe without using it as directed so I'm hopeful that run will continue. it makes it SO much easier to only have to plan the meals for days when we have the boys, and not the full week.

My goodness woman!  So much going on here!   And still your posts sound all full of life, and get-up-n-go and awesomeness!   I am so glad you mentioned your fingers- because then everyone chimed in on it.   And four weeks ago I cracked my right pinky and ring finger knuckle on a box jump attempt.  (36" yo!  And I got it!)   It hurt and bruised up and then after a week didn't seem to chat at me too much.   But after this hiking in the heat vacation - injuries I thought were healing started hurting again!  Including my fingers!!!!   It has reassured me that they probably just hurt from that whacking event - combined with all the heat and activity making me all water retentive and swole.  (Not the good kind.)

Anyway, you're kicking ass as usual!     I loved the bit about your family and how they are all close and bonded across the non-blood-lines.   Chosen family is awesome!!!    Good job you guys!

week 3 day 1

which is to say sunday, when it rained a lot and I went on a soggy pokewalk and then we went to see GHOSTBUSTERS and it was FOR REAL so good, so very very good. I almost cheered when the ghostbusters first appeared lined up ready to go in after a ghost but my socialization prevented me from disturbing the movie. I'm kind of shocked that no one else cheered in the theater, though!

stayed on budget calorie wise, but just 78 g protein.

week 3 day 2

monday! also day 1 of my 30 day hooping program. I got up and went for a run, 2.58 miles | 24:32. it felt really good, actually. maybe I just needed the rest from last week!

after work I stopped for a manicure and pedicure, and then went home and made dinner (carrot masala over quinoa) from Purple Carrot. after that I did a hoop practice for about 7 minutes and we headed to bed super early. SO NECESSARY.

last night my husband noted that the masala over quinoa was so filling, and I reminded him that we really haven't been having a lot of carbs lately, not when we eat at home, anyway. which is not good or bad, just the way things have been.  honestly yo I have no idea what to eat or how much of it. I'm trying to stick with this protein goal just because I hope it helps me to prioritize a certain type of food, so I don't overdo it with beers. I can fit a LOT of beers into a filling and mostly healthy 2000 calorie/day diet.

calories were right on, protein was 109

week 3 day 3

got up early, and did a quick hoop skills workout. I also simultaneously made oatmeal which was actually pretty stressful, I was worried it would boil over while I was hooping. I mixed in eggs and some protein powder and packed up 2 more breakfast servings for my husband and I later in the week.

tonight is tkd. I thought I'd do some squats as part of a tabata workout but didn't get to it this morning. still time, I guess.

AND, I am remembering that part of my successful exercise practice in the past was to get up Every.Single.Day. not to get up some days, and sleep in other days. but to be diligent about a 9:30 bedtime / 5AM wake-up every.single.day. so, that's good to remember!

Friday night was a knitting party and lots of food, including 2 kinds of dessert and champagne / st. germain cocktails.

This sounds so lovely.

I was like "YOU GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL, it's game CANON."

Until level 20 I caught them all, now it's too much effort and waste of balls to go pidgey farming.

And I really want to see Ghostbusters now! The hype is real.
