RavenclawMystic
It's about time Starfleet decided to create an actuarial1 department. And I'm perfect for the job! I mean, who told them to get rid of red shirts to lower workers' compensation and accidental death & dismemberment claims? Yours truly, that's who! But did they listen? Nope. Some other consultant (*cough* Wade Wilson *cough*) convinced them that they'd save on their uniform budget by sticking with red, which doesn't show the blood as much . . really? You'd think Starfleet could at least afford new uniforms for everyone. Now that they've learned from they're mistake, I'm coming on board as the Chief Actuary2 of Starfleet. Woohoo! To prep for my first day, I'm doing the following: Improve water intake. Dehydration leads to physical and mental fatigue FAST. To be at the top of my game, I need enough water. Week 1: Track water intake. Week 2-4: Steadily increase water intake until I complete the "High Quality H2O" NF Quest (3L of water per day for 5 days out of 7). Physical fitness. Continue with the Zombies Run 5K program. Should be able to run a 5K by August 15, which will give me some 'street cred' with the admirals I'll be working with. Also continue with the NF gym workouts, with extra focus on improving my push-up form. This will definitely give me street cred with those admirals. Injury avoidance: Finish reading ChiRunning, and incorporate 2-3 suggestions into my running practice. No workers' comp claims from me! Stress management: Help one of my kitties get on the fitness bandwagon - increase her activity level by playing with her daily. On the off chance I get to go on a site visit to a Starbase or Starship (wouldn't that be awesome?), I need my pets healthy enough to come along. Those are looong trips. When all that is done, I know I'll look awesome in my new uniform: blue dress (for actuarial science) with a command pin (cuz I'm in charge!). And maybe then we can do something about that red shirt liability issue. Notes 1) Actuary (noun): a person who compiles and analyzes statistics and uses them to calculate insurance risks and premiums. Basically, an insurance geek. 2) Yes this is a real title. I didn't make it up. Well, the Starfleet part is made up. And no, I'm not a chief actuary in real life (yet). 1 Quote "Do, or do not. RavenclawMystic
Week 1 update! I had high hopes of writing an update this morning, but at least I'm getting to it today (mostly because I know if I don't, it'll be next weekend before I do!) Improve water intake. I did it! 100 ounces (approximately the same as 3 liters) of water Monday through Saturday (and Sunday isn't over yet!). The most surprising thing to me about this, aside from the fact that I didn't drown under all that water, is that I lost 3 pounds. Now, the fact that I did a little meal prepping (dipping my toe in, so to speak) probably helped, but I think the water did more. I'm going to continue with this as a daily goal, because I also have more energy and clearer skin with the increased water intake. Physical fitness. Completed three of the Zombies Run 5K training sessions. After tomorrow evening's run, I'll be halfway through the program! I also signed up for the Fantastic Beasts virtual 5K (run by the Hogwarts Running Club - can you guess which house I'm in?). It's on July 31, so I'll probably be doing a combination of walking and running, but at least it'll give me a baseline to compare against two weeks later, when this challenge is over. NF gym workouts . . . I hit a snag here. First, on Wednesday, the person I was going to train with cancelled (he's recovering from surgery). So I went to see Ghostbusters instead (it's totally awesome! particularly Chris Hemsworth . . . sigh). Then I started to do the 3A workout this morning - warmed up and did 10 knee push-ups, but was completely unmotivated to keep going past that. Which makes no sense, since I was already going. I suspect I'm bored with the level 3 workouts, and am probably ready to move to level 4, but the bar hang in the boss battle intimidates me (haven't even tried it, it's that intimidating), and I'd really like to try it with someone around to at least let me know I'm doing it right. Until I find that person, or work up enough courage to try it on my own, I'm going to try some of the yoga or barre classes at my gym - focusing on body weight and resistance bands. Injury avoidance: I did do some reading here, and according to Kindle I am 21% of the way through. So a bit behind if I'm looking at having 25% done in the first week. I'll catch up by next week. Stress management: Played with all three kitties every single day this week. They're totally enjoying it (and so am I!). The one who needs the most exercise just jumped onto the weight bench. Maybe she's trying to tell me something? All said, a pretty good week. I hit a few snags (behind on the reading, and need to re-motivate myself for strength training), but am definitely on the right path. And maybe I'll give myself some extra credit for the meal prep. 4 stars out of 5. 1 Quote "Do, or do not.
