Draegon (Liam P Boyle)
See below, seriously NSFW (language): Spoiler Fucking hell, These goddamn DDOS attacks need to fucking stop. -- For reference, I work for a website company. We provide website and online inventory processing for car dealers. Well, last week the largest DDOS (dedicated denial of service) attack in US History (mind you the internet has only been around since the 1990's so were not talking about a very long span of time) this of course affected a significant number (about 2800) of our customers. Needless to say, my life has been a complete and total living fucking hell ever since, with a slight reprieve yesterday. My phone has been ringing non fucking stop with pissed off car dealers ever since. We bough two of the most expensive highly rated network firewalls on the market and now need to move 1000 or so website from our old secured network to our new "wrapped tighter than Thor's balls when he's with a Dom" network. This means I have about 30 or outbound calls I need to make to people who have no idea what the hell I'm talking about during the whole 30 seconds I'm allowed between incoming calls from three call queues. I'm supposed to be cutting down on sugar and alcohol. but I'm so stressed out from this shit, that I barely got any sleep last night, I'm stress eating, and damn near ready to start fucking smoking again. Got damn scriptkiddies need to learn what the bloody fuck they're doing, and quit taking down collateral fucking targets. I really don't feel like having to find another fucking job at over 40 years old. The DDOS attacks on American internet networks that made the news last week have not actually stopped. They went down in severity for a few days and then escalated again Wednesday afternoon. Since I happen to work for a website company things like this create very bad days for me. My company provides a few thousand websites to car dealerships throughout the US and Canada. Between Wednesday afternoon and yesterday morning we had around a hundred downed sites that needed to be moved. This doesn't mean we have a hundred support calls, it means we have more like five hundred as these alpha hotels call in repeatedly about the same problem. Because even though they haven't sold a car in two months, have a series of one star reviews on Yelp, and the nicest piece of crap on their lot is a screaming yellow Pontiac Aztec with visible body damage (pro tip: if the manufacturer is out of business don't buy that car at auction), not having a website for 15 minutes is going to be what kills their business. Anyway, stress tends to lead to things like mini-donuts, and drinking a bit much for me. Now Wednesday night is American Horror Story at ten, so we're up a bit late to begin with. SquirrelKing didn't get in until 11:00 and despite the fact he was trying to be as quiet and respectful as possible, he ended up keeping me awake. So I wake up Thursday with my body screaming for caffeine and sugar, and end up eating about 3000 calories worth of food yesterday. Given I got less than four hours of sleep, I'll chalk it up to "my body needed something to run on." Also, forgetting to take my anti-depressants yesterday probably did not help. 1 Quote Race: Dragonborn Class: Druid/Monk The Journey to Force Mastery: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 __ The Legend The Struggle My MFP Profile My Strava Profile Link to comment

Instead I spent the greater part of my lunch break reading an article on the cultural significance of the "rough and tumble" fighting style in the Southern United States: http://ejmas.com/jmanly/articles/2001/jmanlyart_gorn_0401.htm To me the history of a martial art is almost as important as the techniques of the art. This history gives you the context of why the techniques were used in a certain manner, it shows what the techniques were developed to defend or attack against. For example, the earliest treatise we have on a Western "striking" art is from Daniel Mendoza and dates to approximately 1789. In it is detailed techniques of boxing. Earlier treatises deal mainly with wrestling with or without weapons, how to deploy secondary weapons, or countering armed attacks when your own weapon is not yet readied. So we know that in 14th and 15th century Europe weapon defense is of primary importance therefore, if I want to focus on defending against knife attacks a 15th century dagger manual might not be a bad place to start. Now in the 18th century firearms are the primary military weapon, the urbanization of the early stages of the first industrial revolution is starting to happen and people are no longer wearing swords and daggers all day everyday. In this context, a fighting style that keeps distance and uses measured, planned attacks makes sense. If I don’t have to worry about getting a dagger in my gut following a rushing attack, I can keep distance to minimize my own chances of being severely injured. Since rough and tumble is contemporary to early pugilism but from a less "civilized" geographical area, it was designed for a different set of circumstances. That rough and tumble predates (early 1700’s) American catch wrestling or pugilism gives us yet more insight into its practical applications. Since in 18th century backwoods America most of the male population is armed (huting knives, hatchets, tomahawks ...) due to the nature of daily life in these areas. So combat is grappling based rather than striking based because control of my opponent is of primary importance (if you pull a knife on me with your off-hand while I have you on the ground with an arm lock that engages both of my legs and both of my hands, I’m the one at a severe disadvantage). That fights follow a specific pattern, boasting & insults, standing & striking, grappling & ground fighting, in a specific pattern (we know this from traveler’s accounts and court documents) tell us this was ritual combat not battlefield combat. Emphasis on bloody but often less than lethal techniques (eye-gouging, face biting) tell us that like Roman gladiatorial combat, rough and tumble was focused on appealing to spectators. So the practical application would be that this style of fighting is a way to very visibly assert my dominance of another person in front of the community in a way that is beyond question, and I have no trust that my opponent won’t cheat by violating any "rules" of the ritual. While this isn’t exactly what I had in mind for my knowledge goal with this challenge, I’ll count it. We do not know what light is unless we have experienced darkness. We do not know what warmth is unless we have experienced cold. "This relationship is the balance of the world ..." it is from the interaction of opposing forces that creation comes. The delicate balance between opposing elements is not static either as that simply causes stagnation, but constantly shifting, changing, and moving. These changes as shifts are cyclic in nature, wisdom is to use these to your own advantage by working with these changes and not against them. Acting wisely in tune with our environment and maintaining humility and a lack of desire are the key concepts. Draegon (Liam P Boyle)
Okay, so the Presidential elections coincided with an attack of the brain weasels and a visit from the black dog. I have been just completely off mentally, all week. I'm drinking to much coffee, and have been sipping on booze ever since I found out the sociopath human cheeto with the alien hair won. My diet went straight to hell because my ulcers have been flaring up, which means I need to eat a "low residue" diet for a few days. Basically what this consists of is yogurt, white bread, refined sugar, and other foods that are essentially fiber-less. I even broke down and smoked a pack of cigarettes (not all at once of course). I quit smoking about a year ago, for vaping but I let stress and upset get to me. Anyway, PERKELE!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to just write this week off, take Kidzilla to see Dr. Strange tomorrow, and try to get back on track Monday. For anybody in the Louisville area - should we see the uptick in right-wing harassment that seems to be happening since the election, I'll be doing the safety pin thing so y'all can spot me, and I'm more than willing to be of any assistance I can. My vow when I joined the army all those years ago was to serve the people and the constitution not the ****ing politicians, and I can't stand bullies.
