Continuing on from my previous challenge with similar goals and Deadpool goodness

Goals

tumblr_o3oxopbpR61udh5n8o1_500.gif

1. Stick with Half Marathon Training Plan

I've got 8 weeks till my next half marathon and training is going well so far. I just need to stick to my training plan to run 3-4 times a week. The plan is to a long run on Sunday (unless it's OCR week), a recovery run Tues, speed or hill session Thurs and Parkrun on Saturday (again, unless it clashes with an OCR).

2. Strength train when not running incl GtG chin ups.

Pretty self explanatory, do a strength training routine - whether that's lifting or body-weight based - 2-3 times a week (climbing is included in this too). Also keep working on chin ups whenever I can to try and do more than one.

3. Stretch properly and foam roll my ass regularly.

I've started to let this slide again and my body is starting to suffer because of it. I need to make sure I warm up before running, stretch afterwards, and try to foam roll whenever I can, particularly my ass! I did a 10k run yesterday and my left glute seized up so badly I struggled to walk back to the car! If i'm going to increase my running distance and intensity, I've got to look after my butt! I'm also going to experiment with some BCAAs to see if these help with recovery.

Bonus goal - Don't eat like a dick on weekdays. Keep a food log Mon-Fri. I'm allowed to eat what I like at weekends but that doesn't mean I can go crazy.

I started tracking what I ate in the middle of the last challenge and found it helpful to just keep me mindful of what I was eating. I'm not monitoring calories or trying to lose or gain weight, I just want to make my diet healthier to try and keep my energy levels up and hopefully stop me catching every bug that goes around!

Good goals!  Which half is it you're doing again?

Great Birmingham run in October. I did it in 2012 as my first half marathon and it was a really good run. Except for the hill that appears right at the end! Have a look at the sudden elevation at the bottom of the the route map (spoilered for size). Evil!

Goals updated. I officially started this challenge yesterday with a 10k run that was organised by a semi-local running club. The route was advertised as "fast & flat" but there were a few hills early on. The last 4k were all downhill though and ended with a 200m run around part of the rugby field. I completed it in 1:05:44 which I'm happy with. My calves felt sore from trying to run a fast 5k on Saturday, so I probably could have gone a bit faster. I'm more happy that the Hubs was only 3 minutes in front of me. Which means if I train hard enough, I've got a good chance of beating him at Birmingham Half. Well, if he slacks in his training (likely) I may just beat him. Yes, I am that competitive.

Was going to take today as a rest day but I've got new challenge jitters so I'm going to do an upper body workout today including some GtG chin ups. Plus my calves and booty are still a bit sore from yesterday (waits for the inevitable jokes) so some foam rolling and glute stretches will be done.

Also. Stretching. I can't stress enough how important this is. I'm someone who LOVES being sore and the feeling of soreness...so I let the stretching thing slide for wayyy too loong. Guess what it does if you let it go unchecked? Besides pain and tears......Joint issues. I didn't know that. So stretch and foam roll and think about all the future awesomeness you're helping yourself get to. I wish I could go back in time and slap the silly out of myself for doing that.

I sympathize with the foam rolling woes.  I only seem to remember to do the foam rolling after letting my ITB get super tight and symptomatic when I could have prevented the symptoms and tightness in the first place by being responsible.

'don't eat like a dick' was stolen from someone on here. Not sure who it was but I know a few other rebels use this wise philosophy for nutrition. Yeah, I'm no spring chicken anymore. I can't run a 10k OCR and expect my muscles to just bounce back like they used to.

So do I! I still have Wednesday or Thursday down as climbing days. Climbing counts as a strength workout!

Same here, whenever my glutes are playing up or my calves get tight, I always go on a foam rolling and stretching kick and then stop when things feel normal again. This is not OK! I need to make it a permanent part of my routine.

Wouldn't that be lovely, to be able to outsource your stretching to someone else. I'm afraid not though. Like Slates said, a few minutes of stretching now to prevent months of pain down the line. We can do it!
