sarakingdom
In the near future, the TARDIS materialises in the English countryside near the village of Carbury, where a nuclear missile convoy under the command of UNIT Brigadier Winifred Bambera has run into difficulties. Lying on the bed of nearby Lake Vortigern is a spaceship from another dimension containing the body of King Arthur, supposedly held in suspended animation, and his sword Excalibur. Ancelyn, Arthur's Knight General, arrives on Earth to aid the King but is followed by Arthur's enemies, Mordred and his mother, a powerful sorceress named Morgaine. They recognise the Doctor as Merlin, who rides the ship of time, and the Doctor has to finish a conflict that a future regeneration started. This challenge was picked for one big reason. It is hot. There needs to be swimming. BAMBERA: What are you doing in the lake? ACE: Drowning. Here, you can be King of England. ANCELYN: It's Excalibur. ACE: That's what I said, Shakespeare. Given that it's Battlefield, some sword work also seems unavoidable. And some of that Bartitsu/La Canne umbrella work would also fit in nicely. (I don't really have big goals here, but it's a clear necessity. I'll dabble. Maybe throw in some upper-body strength work. That seems reasonable.) More intermittent fasting. I need to be a little more disciplined about it. DESTROYER: I hunger. More sleep. More discipline about bedtime. (That's one of my worst things.) More meditation. DOCTOR: Stop! I command it! Also, this one is going to be hard to quantify, but I've been in a bit of a work rut lately, and I need to shake myself out of it. ACE: So, we're in the school corridor by now and Mrs Parkinson asks me to put what she thinks is school plasticine back in the art room. SHOU: So what did you do? ACE: I tossed it over my shoulder, like that. Landed right in the middle of class 1-C's prize winning pottery pig collection. And boom! SHOU: Boom? ACE: Boom! 7 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever. The show drifted a bit for part of the '80s, but they turned the show around quite seriously in those last two years. It was heavily influenced by the Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman/Grant Morrison comics renaissance, and it's basically all the roots of modern Who - the companion with the character arc, the new mythology for the Doctor, shifting the pacing to a more modern pace in a lot of stories, and half the New Who writers were tie-in novelists for the Seventh Doctor back in the day. They were ahead of their time on a lot of things. I mean, it's still zero budget and it shows, but it's gloriously bonkers and well put-together. A lot of underappreciated stuff there. 16 hours ago, ChrisWithaStick said: I may even be more active on threads this time around. Yay! You could even make a thread, you know. There are some forms in my aikido style, and I keep pondering some of the Darebee sword workouts, just for funsies. (I have been hesitating on them because, while they may be fun workouts, I don't think they're that hot on sword forms, so, like, do I really want to practice that?) What it'll probably end up being is a bucket for any strength workout where I do upper body work, and a little token practice of the cuts, or a little practice of some forms. 3 hours ago, Liam P Boyle said: If you taking suggestions, I would go with 19th century American military saber, but I might be a tad biased. :-) That would be fun some day. More or less, Col T.H. Monstery had this to say about the cane: "The use of the cane depends on principles resembling those of the broadsword or sabre, with one important difference. The sword has, or should have, a guard to cover the hand from injury, therefore, the parries with a sword can be made with the point up, the hand remaining in the same position at all times, so as to secure the grand secret of defense—economy of motions. The cane, on the other hand, having no guard, it is necessary that all blows should be taken on it in such a manner that they may be diverted away from the hand, and therefore all guards1 in cane exercise are made with the point down." R.G. Allanson-Winn the pugilist had this to say about the walking stick: "Let the stick you habitually carry be one well within your compass. If it comes up to guard readily and without any apparent effort or straining of your wrist, and if you find you can make all the broadsword cuts, grasping it as shown in Fig. 14, without the least spraining your thumb, then you may be pretty sure that you are not “over-sticked,” and that your cuts and thrusts will be smart to an extent not to be acquired if you carried a stick ever so little too heavy for you." Kishi
I'm always so impressed with the work I see in western sword-arts. There's just a lot of cool stuff going on that I never appreciated when I was first coming up in the martial arts. Anyway, here I am. I've been pushing myself hard work-wise this week, and I sort of crashed today and did nothing. Feeding myself was an accomplishment. Yay me. So I redesigned my schedule for some time off, because that at least I could accomplish. I might manage a swim tonight. (I could pull off a weekly pass tonight, if I have time.) Swim accomplished. Technical pass for the week. So week 0 was worse on exercise than most weeks up till now. I've really been dragging myself through the week and trying to squeeze productivity and good work-and-sleep habits out of my schedule, and I'm feeling a little extra-daunted by what I need to get done lately. Part of why I did a theme shake-up this challenge is because I knew I was starting to drag, so this is not totally unexpected, even if it is disappointing. 2 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.
