Following this post, I've  made a decision.  If I can find a couple more black ribboners next challenge, who vant to be abstainink from the V-word (vakefulness) and put all der old-fashioned children off der night business behind them, I promise to do the whole challenge in the style of a Discworld vampire.  There vill be cocoa und singalongs und regular meetings at der town hall. I'm ridiculously enthusiastic about it.  I just hope I can find enough Discworld fans with sleep issues to make it happen.  If you know any, send them over to get subscribed to our sleeping quarters.  I'm really not kidding about the singalongs and cocoa and Temperance League meetings.

This week is not great for staying on target with the workouts.  I'm putting a lot of effort into work lately, work and getting enough sleep, and keeping my workouts on schedule comes second.  I'm not going to sweat it this challenge, because my rule for this challenge is not to sweat anything.  (Though I am going to test out a "do I sleep better if I exercise just before bed" experiment, which will hopefully kill two birds with one stone.)

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Great goddess I need to get around to reading those books.

You do. They are AMAZING.

They're best not read from the beginning, because the first couple of books aren't very good. Generally it's suggested people start with Guards, Guards! From there, there are a few routes to go.  (If you want to read them to join the sleep group, the book you want is The Truth.)

There are series within the series, one about the police force in the city, one about a bunch of rural witches in the mountains, one about the Grim Reaper and his family, one about a set of modernizations in the city, one about Rincewind the wizard, and a bunch of standalones. They're chronological in order of publication, but not strongly dependent on previous books, though it's good to stay roughly chronological within series. The author's really good about making them self-contained books, but some books just mean more if you have the backstory.

I really needed that yoga I did last night.  (Though afterwards, I had a terrible time sleeping.  Honestly, I'm lucky if I got three hours.  I can't really blame the yoga, because I think it was more that my neck hurt, but as a first experiment in whether exercise before bed is helpful for sleep, it was not a positive data point.  Not a lot of mental wandering, though, which was nice.)

It's odd, but things like yoga and chigung, etc, basically give me insomnia if I have a session within an hour or so before bedtime.  Intense exercise, oddly enough, not so much.  I think that deep breathing while moving with focus tends to reboot the 'I'm awake' feeling, at least for me. I learned this the hard way back when I had a semi-regular chigung practice.  It was nice and relaxing, and I felt good, and super alert for a couple of hours after. When finally down off the oxygenation high, I was in that 'I've stayed up too late so now it's hard to get to sleep' mode.   If you have the option (and no neck pain), you might try different amounts of time between yoga and bedtime?

Protecting Excalibur, as you do.

There is something in the above scene about knowing your limitations, and not being ashamed of them.  Which is not totally relevant this week, but I'm definitely pushing my scheduling and my focus abilities lately, and it's tiring, so it's reassuring to see that not even having Excalibur is always enough.

Intense exercise is usually pretty good before bed, because everything relaxes.  Not sure why yoga would be different, since there's a strength/stretching component that I'd expect to do the same.  (Very hard to know if it was the yoga, since I was sleeping oddly that week anyway.  I did fall asleep reasonably well, then woke up, and had several nights like that.)

I would like to keep trying, because that's a nice efficient two-birds-with-one-stone thing, if I get my workout and a good night's sleep out of half an hour right before bed.

I see that you have confidence in your IF goals but not so much in the others. I hope the sleep and movement components fit into your schedule this week. Those make a big difference in your overall happiness.

I'm curious to see the results of your experiments. I usually do intense exercise from about 7-8:30pm, then have some winding down time before bed. When I lived closer to the dojo there would be nights when I just walked home and crashed. I rarely had trouble sleeping then, so it doesn't serve as a good data point.

I have tried meditation before bed. I thought it might be hard to concentrate, considering that I get sleepy meditating in the middle of the day. Nope. My brain is all there when I meditate at night. Trying to chatter like mad. The meditation might help by letting my brain run through all the things so I don't need to do that when I go to bed. My zen teacher recommends meditating right before sleep. It is certainly more pleasant than some of the stupid things my brain can get stuck on.

It's not confidence, but the predictable default state when I wake up.  I know I'm going to wake up fasting, so points come off of that rather than add to it.  I don't wake up having worked out, so points add to that rather than come off.

I'm not doing a good experiment, because I've been working out earlier in the day instead, to try and get the big ticket items off my list earlier.  Well, someday I'll do that experiment.

That tallies with my experiments in meditating before bed.  The brain is definitely very active.  That might also be worth a try.

So far this week, basic hydration was the cause of my sleep failure.  I've been trying to up the water levels.

I'm back on track with the Nerd Fitness Academy workouts.  I feel like I'm pretty close to levelling up, except that I fail badly at side plank, and that's going to keep me doing the same thing for ages.  Knee side plank is borderline too easy, but regular is not really going to fly soon.  (I'm not sure if it's core muscles or that my elbow freaks out with that much pressure on it, or both.  My elbow definitely freaks out with that much pressure.)  I... sort of fail at warm-up and cool-down.  Which is maybe not great.

Going to re-transition to standing while working.  I'm about to hunt down a foot rest I can fidget on.

Among today's good productivity-and-fitness-combined choices: more standing desk time.  I heard an interview with Kelly Starrett on his new book Deskbound, which I'm getting from the library, and it kind of touched on some ideas I was playing with, and gave me some goals.  So I'm working on increasing my standing time, and I'm finding a foot rest to shift position on.  (They recommend a moving one, to get more possibilities for movement while standing, so I may try a soccer ball temporarily.  I mean, sure, their thing is actually pretty cool, and I might buy it one day, but I'm busy getting rid of the stuff I own right now, so I'm going to improvise.)

My IF has been a little loose lately, more like 16/8 or 17/7, and I haven't been docking points.  But it's tightening up again.  I don't think 16/8 really works that well for me, so I really should be more strict.  My sleeping hours are decent, but also getting a little loose.  Fortunately, next challenge is very about the regimented sleep, and I may just start Zero Week promptly.

Well, I'm going to wrap this challenge with the other Scottish Doctor:

Because I think that this week, I'm pulling out of the rut that sent me running to Doctor Who this challenge.  Today is not, in fact, a Bad Day, but I do notice that as my brain comes back online from something like this, it tends to kick some crud out as it clears the buffers, and I need to keep it focused on more upbeat things until it settles down.  So the best thing I can do is distract it with some enthusiasm and unbearable cuteness from Season 9 when it's looking a little volatile.  And after a slightly slow intro, this is unbearably cute.

Anyway. Lifestyle goals.
