JediNickD
Welcome back for another episode of the exciting Adventures of JediNickD! It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away that I joined this site and started my first challenge. Upon my return, I have decided to revisit some of my challenge themes to turn them into lessons as I had been doing more recently. I feel it is a good way to reflect on my own learning and progress to write about and share these lessons, but I also have another objective. I am cataloging these lessons in a document which is now up to 136 pages. The plan is to use this document as a reference for my personal Jedi training and to pass on for my Padawan training. It isn't just my Nerd Fitness challenges. It includes every Jedi-related writing I have done, training I have worked through, and documents I have collected (which are not protected but have sources noted). So what is my story? As I said, I've been here before. I kicked a lot of butt progressing through 22 challenges since 2012, until middle of 2015. After struggling to maintain a presence here through the first half of 2015, I struck out on my own as I had conquered many obstacles here, learned many lessons, and felt I was ready to implement a new accountability strategy for I had developed a strong supporting cast in real life to keep me accountable. Alas, a back injury and a "layoff" crumbled all my plans. I am recovered from both now, more or less. In October, I started a new job only three weeks after my old one ended. The growing pains are over and now I feel entrenched in my new world. In October and November, I took a lot of time off from fitness to allow my back to heal. In December, I started physical therapy to strengthen my back. I have occasional flare ups, but for the most part, I have my body functioning like its old self. Well, an out-of-shape and over-weight old self. Today, I am wrapping up my last physical therapy session. It is like I am back at square one, or Level 1 for my character here. But it is not like my character died and I have a new one. My knowledge and experience is retained. Instead of hitting the reset button, I'll jump to World 2 complete with new challenges and obstacles. Old foes may come back, but they will require new techniques to defeat them. I am still a Jedi in training, learning from the old masters, unlearning what I have learned, practicing the new techniques, and improving daily. Challenge Lesson: "Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless." - Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back [emphasis mine] Last challenge, I discussed commitment a bit analyzing the "Do or do not" quote from Yoda eliminating "Try" from my vocabulary. This challenge, I take another look at commitment in regards to seriousness for Jedi training and applying it to real life. Yoda says specifically, "A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind." (bold above) There is no joking or tomfoolery when it comes to Jedi. Being a Jedi is serious business with serious consequences for not taking it seriously. In Star Wars, it is a matter of life or death for the whole rebellion if Luke Skywalker was not paying enough attention during his failure in the cave. For a Jedi in Star Wars, commitment to training and Jedi ideals comes before all else, even a Jedi's friends. Yoda demands that Luke stay at Dagobah and complete his training instead of rushing off to save his friends from Darth Vader. "If you honor what they fight for" Yoda says. By going off to save his friends, Luke endangered everything the Rebellion had accomplished and would accomplish in the future, because he was their last hope of defeating the Emperor. Only with Luke fully trained as a Jedi could the Rebellion destroy the Emperor and put an end to his tyranny. Luke is not well prepared for facing off with Darth Vader, but his fortitude in the light side of the Force (through the love for his friends) is better than Yoda and Obi-Wan realized. Luke survives and returns to complete his training keeping his promise to Yoda and Obi-Wan, keeping his commitment to the Rebellion, the Jedi, and the Light side of the Force. It is tricky to analyze and understand peoples motives for keeping committed to something. For me, my commitment to Toastmasters is three-fold. I have a deep desire to continue to improve and discover myself. Toastmasters gives me that opportunity in a variety of ways. I have a deep desire to impact the lives of others in a positive way, influencing them to improve themselves and reach their highest potential. Toastmasters gives me the opportunity to coach and mentor people in a variety of ways while watching them grow as individuals. Lastly, I developed the worst fear of public speaking through many traumatic embarrassing experiences, where Toastmasters helped me get over it and will continue to ensure I am never that scared person again. For other Toastmasters, I am still searching for their why to help hook them in and keep their commitment. I have decided that each Toastmaster can use the stage to find their why for other things. By writing and giving speeches, a Toastmasters will have to look at themselves and their genuine feelings on subjects. Sure, presenting facts is easy, but defending your personal opinion or belief in front of a crowd calls for a deep commitment to those opinions or beliefs. If you don't feel strongly for something, then it will be difficult to be confident in your stance and persuasive in your speech. However, if you have passion for something, a deep commitment, a most serious mind, then you will speak with enthusiasm and excitement. That enthusiasm and excitement is contagious. It will infect the audience, grab their attention, and influence them towards your opinions or beliefs, facts be damned. By finding these passions, beliefs, and opinions which one is most committed and excited for, the individual will discover who they are underneath the frightened and embarrassed outer shell sheltering us from the potential thoughts and actions of others. Find your voice, find your confidence. The deepest commitment is something where tomfoolery is unacceptable. It is where passion and enthusiasm reside. With a deep commitment, mountains can be moved. My Main Quest and Mission: My mission is to be the best Jedi I can be. My main quest is always to enhance my overall health, fitness, and knowledge to be prepared for whatever challenges life could throw at me. As a Jedi, I need to be able to help people, whether that is a life threatening situation or just a charitable one. There is no boss level in Jedi training, there is only tomorrow. World 2 Level 5 Challenge: FITNESS: Work Up a Sweat - 500 minutes of conditioning training for the entire challenge. DEX +2, STA +3 The weekly plan is a minimum of three 30 minute tabata runs with Pokémon Go, plus plenty of walking, hiking, or other activities. I crushed my goal last challenge, but my family has returned home. They throw a wrench in all plans I make for evenings and weekends. Stretch and Strengthen - 520 minutes of exercises and stretches for the entire challenge. STR +2, DEX +1 The weekly plan includes 10 minutes of regular stretching each day, two 20 minute sessions of physical therapy exercises and 20 minutes of other strength training each week. DIET: Weight Control - Lose 4 lbs by end of challenge. Never weigh more than 167 lbs. CON +3 I'm starting at 163.2 lbs as of August 22nd. LIFE: Get Stuff Done - Complete 16 Tasks or Projects from any of the following areas: Toastmasters, Webmaster, Jedi Training, Work, House Work, Home Renovation, Auto Maintenance, Family Activities (to keep it diverse, no more than 3 from any one category) WIS +2, CHA +2 I'm still procrastinating, deciding to do the fun stuff first and delay the less fun stuff. I need a rewards system for getting the hard stuff done. For each week I don't procrastinate undesirable tasks (where I think "I'll do it later") where I overcome procrastination and do it or at least work on it, I'll reward myself with one game of Madden Saturday morning. If I procrastinated at all, then I have to give up my morning to working on something I procrastinated. This plan won't influence my goal grade, but it will give me incentive to do all the things, instead of just the fun ones. 1 Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. I still have some writing to complete my Challenge Lesson, Main Quest, and Quest Goals. Check back later and see the whole post. I stalk other Star Wars themes for fun, but I really like reading others' ideas for inspiration. The Assassins ran a fun mini challenge a few months ago where I borrowed a few exercises. My abs appreciated it. Feel free to mine my challenges for ideas. Loving the layout of your challenge. Ranger for Life! Though I had toyed with the idea of switching guilds for a challenge to expand my horizons, totally in the spirit of being a Ranger. I decided I can just jump in to their minis or borrow challenge, goal, and exercise ideas from them without switching. Druid, Monk, Assassin, and Scouts are who I need to pull from. Flexibility, spirituality, quickness, and endurance are areas I want to improve upon while I re-establish myself into "the best shape of my life" state (I'll have to write something about that later). Over the next few challenges, I'll get the Adventurers and Warriors involved as I'm looking to do some rock climbing and getting back into heavy lifting, just not anytime soon. My wife and I need to build the rock wall first. And I need to ease back into heavy lifting. Since last September, I haven't lifted anything over 50 lbs (besides myself doing pull ups and a few times I did bench presses). Try not. JediNickD
My week between challenges bounced my weight a bit. I was hoping to be under 164 at the start of this challenge, but it doesn't seem likely as I was 164.4 and 164.6 the last two days. Saturday will be busy with "Mermaids on a Mission" charity event and two gaming gatherings, but I should active on Sunday with a morning run and getting the kids to a park to run around before a BJs run. JediNickD
Starting weight: 163.2 lbs I'll have to get under 160 lbs for the first time in about 7 years the last time I was playing rugby. This was a well organized event, except for the Facebook description, which left out the silent auction, pool access, professional mermaid for the kids, and a few other things I can't remember now. The kids had a great time and it was difficult to drag them away to run home to playtest some games with a friend. Totally doing this event again, and will be swimming the river next year! It is a long swim, so I'll have to train for it. Especially, because I swim like a rock. So excited for this! I'm even more excited for Extra Life Game day on November 5th! I'm putting together my 24 hour game day, my fundraising pages, and getting ready to start recruiting my team. I wonder if there is a Nerd Fitness team? I'll be posting my fundraising pages soon. Do you make a team and play games all day?? http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=205254 "Dear Friends and Family, I'm on a mission to save kids and I need your help. My local Children's Miracle Network Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children Center, treats thousands of children each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay. These kids are facing scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents to name just a few. My youngest daughter, Serafina, had an overnight stay at their hospital when she was experiencing overwhelming acid reflux issues. A tube was snaked down her throat to her stomach for the doctors to examine the acidic damage. Fin is all healed up now and doing great. Fortunately, Fin's medical needs and expenses were minor. Not all kids and families are so lucky. That is where Extra Life and the Children's Miracle Network come in. I'll be participating in this huge worldwide celebration of the social impact of gamers of all kinds from video games to board games and tabletop RPG's! Since 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $22 million to help children's hospitals provide critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care. It's my sincere hope that you'll find it in your heart to support my efforts with a monthly pledge or one-time gift that will go directly to my hospital. This is my first time participating. I set modestly low goals which I'm confident my friends and family will just blow out of the water. I also put together a Team Page for any friends and family who join Extra Life or are already members for us to band together and push our fundraising even higher. Gameday is November 5th. I'll be organizing a 24 hour gaming marathon at my house for all my family and friends to come, play, and support a great cause. In 24 hours, we'll play just about everything in my library from Cosmic Encounter and Manhattan Project to Star Wars: Battlefront on XBox One and Halo 3 on XBox 360 to Super Mario Bros. on NES and Mutant League Hockey on Sega Genesis to Dungeon Crawl RPG and Magic The Gathering. We'll have kids games going to, where I'll run a custom kids RPG at one point. We'll setup a YouTube or Facebook stream for those who can't make it to be able to check in to see what is going on. I'm not super experienced with streaming so that may be a mess, but documenting the experience with pictures and video is a must! Also, you can search around your area for other events to participate or donate to. The game store in Aberdeen called Xpanding Universe is hosting an Extra Life 24 hour event on Oct 29th starting at 11am. Other game stores will likely have similar events. Go find one! Keep in mind, your donation to Extra Life is tax-deductible and ALL PROCEEDS go to help kids. I need your help to reach my goal For The Kids. Please take a moment to make a safe, easy donation online today. Click the "Donate" button on this page to get started. Thank you so much for supporting my efforts!" JediNickD
Updated the Battle Log with todays and yesterday's workouts. We bought Minecraft for the kids yesterday. We played a lot and figured some stuff out. It took them an hour to learn how to navigate and work the control sticks. Between that and Child of Light they are slowly getting more experience with video games. I was going to get it as a birthday present for my youngest who asks about it all the time and I was going to put it on one of the older systems like the Xbox 360, which has games for them and is just collecting dust, but my wife jumped the gun and got it on the Xbox One, so now we have to share the living room TV with the kids even more. Soon they will have their own space downstairs again... or I will have my own space. Just need to get back to cleaning up again. The weather is getting nicer for doing outdoor projects again, which means completing the deck electrical work will be a priority on good weather weekends. I should be able to make some progress this challenge. JediNickD
Today was lifting day. I hit the leg press at 570 lbs for 10 reps to maximize sets. I need to build up the smaller muscle group before I go big. I finished with 7 sets. My friend is ready to play racquetball again! We are playing this Friday. I'm excited, but I know I'm rusty. I might get a little practice in tomorrow. I've heard that Child of Light come up before, but forgot to look into it. I started playing Ori at the beginning of the summer, but got stumped on a level and now... ugh. JediNickD
Yesterday, I jumped into three mini-challenges (Scouts and Monk don't have minis). The Ranger mini with the Dwarf feats are right up my alley. I've got each feat planned out to be able to complete any week they come up. Week 1 Distance Feat already complete. The Druid mini is all about expressing gratitude daily. Each NF visit, I'll go to that thread and express gratitude about something and I completed yesterday and today already. The Assassin challenge is Kingdom of Hearts themed, which seems fun. Their exercise challenges are always great pushing me in directions outside my comfort zone, which is the best way to grow. At lunch time today, I'll hit the gym to knock out the Masyaf World Quest. It is a circuit: Complete the following circuit of exercises. 5 pushups 5 alternating lunges 15 seconds plank 20 air squats Repeat the entire circuit 4 times Hopefully, my 1030 meeting doesn't run long and hold me up. I want to be able to move on to the other worlds next week. JediNickD
Meeting ran long so I skipped my warm up run and substituted hip flexor exercises for lifting. Still a great workout. Also, in the mini, the pushups and planks were too easy, so increased the difficulty with 20 reps, 20 seconds, and up-down transitions. JediNickD
Week 1 Challenge Status: FITNESS: Work Up a Sweat - 500 minutes of conditioning training for the entire challenge. DEX +2, STA +3 Progress: 40 + 40 + 50 + 50 + 20 + 50 = 250 min (planned 125 per week) I'm already halfway to my goal. That's nuts, though I did not plan for 100 of those minutes (Thank you, Distance Feat and the Return of the Racquetball) Weekend Plan: Rest Saturday. 30 min run with the dogs on Sunday morning. Stretch and Strengthen - 520 minutes of exercises and stretches for the entire challenge. STR +2, DEX +1 Progress: 30 + 20 + 20 + 60 + 10 + 10 + 40 + 10 + 10 + 40 = 240 min (planned 130 per week) Excellent progress! Lunch Time and Evening workouts increased my stretching cumulative time. Weekend Plan: Rest and Stretching each day. DIET: Weight Control - Lose 4 lbs by end of challenge. Never weigh more than 167 lbs. CON +3 Started at 163.2 lbs on Monday. Today I am 163.8 lbs, but I didn't once go over 164, which is excellent for stability of my weight. Stability begets control. I hate throwing away food, so my diet was full of heavy leftovers all week as I cleaned out the fridge. Weekend and Week 2 Plan: Last night, with some leftover raw ground beef, I made Shepard's Pie to last quite a few days. I need to get some lettuce, carrots, and peppers to offset my lunch portions for next week. Grocery shopping Sunday afternoon. Blue Apron dinners will eliminate leftovers piling up again. LIFE: Get Stuff Done - Complete 16 Tasks or Projects from any of the following areas: Toastmasters, Webmaster, Jedi Training, Work, House Work, Home Renovation, Auto Maintenance, Family Activities (to keep it diverse, no more than 3 from any one category) WIS +2, CHA +2 Progress: Laundry and dishes done. Extra-Life fundraiser pages done (need to finish the Facebook event invite to friends and family and share my pages to my Wall). Donations for food and toiletry drives done. Weekend Plan: Saturday will be a busy day. I'll need to work on the Toastmasters District Website, mow the lawn, weed the play yard, clean the rabbit, clean the chickens, clean the cats, clean and vacuum the living room and dining room... I'm sure there is more, but how much can I really fit in before the 4pm gathering (not a party) for my youngest daughter 6th birthday? The girls will have to help and I'll probably have to give them good incentives. Sunday I have to walk the dogs, go to church, go grocery shopping with the kids, and finish up whatever I didn't get done Saturday. School starts Monday for the kids, so we might do something special for their last Summer vacation night, like go out for ice cream and hit a playground. Hopefully, I can massage the new exercises into my strength and physical therapy workouts without an issue. I'll need to take advantage of opportunities for lunch time and evening workouts to keep ahead of schedule. I'm going to put together a progress report later today to see what I should do at lunch time today. I'm way ahead in conditioning, so strength training it is for my lunch time workout. Looks like I should test for Pushups and Wall Handstand for the Assassins mini: Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. Looks like I should test for Pushups and Wall Handstand for the Assassins mini: Tested well in the Cat Balance (22 sec) and Wall Handstand (30 sec is when the head rush and eye pain is too much), but my pushup total was underwhelming. I'll take another crack at it before I am eligible to work on it. I also made some headway on the three quests: Pride Lands Goal 220 sec => progress 49 + 53 = 102 sec Wonderlands Goal 300 sec => progress 30 + 30 = 60 sec Deep Jungle Goal 140 reps => progress 10 + 5 + 4 = 19 reps Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. So I only counted Wonderlands, and I rushed it through on Saturday and this morning to finish it up, because it was hell on my wrists. Next up will be Deep Jungle to go along with the Strength Feat in the Dwarf Ranger Mini. Each day I workout, I'll go for PR, then as many sets of 5 reps as I can until my arms fall off.
