Week 1 Challenge Status:

FITNESS:

  • Work Up a Sweat - 500 minutes of conditioning training for the entire challenge.

    DEX +2, STA +3

    Progress:  40 + 40 + 50 + 50 + 20 + 50 = 250 min (planned 125 per week)
I'm already halfway to my goal.  That's nuts, though I did not plan for 100 of those minutes (Thank you, Distance Feat and the Return of the Racquetball)
Weekend Plan:  Rest Saturday.  30 min run with the dogs on Sunday morning.

  • Stretch and Strengthen - 520 minutes of exercises and stretches for the entire challenge.

    STR +2, DEX +1

    Progress: 30 + 20 + 20 + 60 + 10 + 10 + 40 + 10 + 10 + 40 = 240 min (planned 130 per week)
Excellent progress!  Lunch Time and Evening workouts increased my stretching cumulative time.
Weekend Plan:  Rest and Stretching each day.

DIET:

  • Weight Control - Lose 4 lbs by end of challenge. Never weigh more than 167 lbs.

    CON +3

Started at 163.2 lbs on Monday.  Today I am 163.8 lbs, but I didn't once go over 164, which is excellent for stability of my weight.  Stability begets control.  I hate throwing away food, so my diet was full of heavy leftovers all week as I cleaned out the fridge.
Weekend and Week 2 Plan:  Last night, with some leftover raw ground beef, I made Shepard's Pie to last quite a few days.  I need to get some lettuce, carrots, and peppers to offset my lunch portions for next week.  Grocery shopping Sunday afternoon.  Blue Apron dinners will eliminate leftovers piling up again.

LIFE:

  • Get Stuff Done - Complete 16 Tasks or Projects from any of the following areas: Toastmasters, Webmaster, Jedi Training, Work, House Work, Home Renovation, Auto Maintenance, Family Activities (to keep it diverse, no more than 3 from any one category)

    WIS +2, CHA +2

Progress:  Laundry and dishes done.  Extra-Life fundraiser pages done (need to finish the Facebook event invite to friends and family and share my pages to my Wall).  Donations for food and toiletry drives done.
Weekend Plan:  Saturday will be a busy day.  I'll need to work on the Toastmasters District Website, mow the lawn, weed the play yard, clean the rabbit, clean the chickens, clean the cats, clean and vacuum the living room and dining room... I'm sure there is more, but how much can I really fit in before the 4pm gathering (not a party) for my youngest daughter 6th birthday?  The girls will have to help and I'll probably have to give them good incentives.  Sunday I have to walk the dogs, go to church, go grocery shopping with the kids, and finish up whatever I didn't get done Saturday.  School starts Monday for the kids, so we might do something special for their last Summer vacation night, like go out for ice cream and hit a playground.

I got up early so it was a 30 min Run and 30 min Walk with the dogs.  Covered over 5km and captured 4 Pokémon Gyms!

Shepard's Pie only had one serving left this morning thanks to a friend digging in to it on Friday (Yay!  I made food people like!).  I'll have to hit the grocery store on the way home as I didn't get there on Sunday.

Kicked butt on the chores:  worked on the Toastmasters District Website for 4 hours (I only have the conference agendas to finish up), mowed the front, back and chicken yards, cleaned the rabbit, chickens, and cats, cleaned and vacuumed the living room, kitchen, dining room, and bathroom.  The kids mopped and vacuumed the couch, plus picked up all the toys.  Rewarded the kids with S'mores.  The play yard was the only item I didn't hit, because my wife asked for the bathroom to get done instead.

I was so productive I rewarded myself with 1 game of Madden and an hour of Hawken (an early access alpha Mech FPS for PC), then my wife rewarded me by playing Minecraft with me.

161.6 lbs this morning.  Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta!

I ran 40 min this morning.  Planning to hit the gym at lunch.  I bought my healthy lunches for the week.  No more leftovers for a few days.  I might do a turkey sandwich for Wednesday.  I got some chores done last night fixing the deck screen and gaps to keep the cats in the house.  I packed up some clothing donations.  Tonight, I have Toastmasters.

My yellow lab destroyed the metal screen I put on the deck.  I reinstalled with some reinforcement.  It looks like we will have to add metal screen or wooden planks to the screen to keep the dog from destroying other areas too.  Yay!  More work! >:-(

Walked for 50 min yesterday.  Did 100 pull ups through out the day.  Ran 40 min this morning.  Workout at lunch time today will focus on pushups, squats, and hanging leg raises.  My arms are sore, but pushing through is how we get stronger.

163.0 lbs this morning.  I thought I did better than that over the long weekend.  Oh well, back to square one.

I walked 60 min Friday night, walked around Comic Con for a few hours on Saturday, ran for 60 min Sunday, 30 min Monday, and 60 min this morning.

Holy moly you are doing all sorts of walking and pulling up and badassery!   Don't worry about the weight.  So much makes it fluctuate.   I used to do every day weigh-ins so that I could see the overall trend.  It looked like a washboard, but the trend was overall down.

But I hear ya... after two weeks of vacation + con + sick, I'm back up like 5lbs and feeling all bleh!

But we have this~!   We must just trust in the force and focus our minds on it. :)

Back down to 162.4 lbs.  Success in my weight loss and weight control is all about my diet.  If I'm not active, then I have to shrink the portions and avoid heavy, unhealthy snacks and soda.  My heartburn coming back is an indication that I am doing things wrong.  Blaming work schedule and not having healthy options readily available is the easy way out.  BUT I DON'T WANT OUT!  I want to stay IN fighting the healthy fight to eat right and lose excess weight!

After three 10.5 hour work days with minimal breaks, I have not been able to do updates like I would want to.  I wanted to do a mid-term report card on Tuesday, but that ship sailed.  Instead, I'll do the "One Week Left" update:

Week 3 Challenge Status:

FITNESS:

  • Work Up a Sweat - 500 minutes of conditioning training for the entire challenge.

    DEX +2, STA +3

    Progress:  250 + 540 = 790 min (planned 125 per week)
For the last week, I'll just make sure I hit my planned per week of 125 min, but this goal is DONE!  Next challenge, after I look at the schedule, I'll look to raise the bar.

  • Stretch and Strengthen - 520 minutes of exercises and stretches for the entire challenge.

    STR +2, DEX +1

    Progress:  240 + 340 + 80 = 660 min (planned 130 per week)
Goal met.  In Week 2, I worked out twice each weekday.  In Week 3, I have run each morning and have only had time for one workout a day due to the long workdays.  Running more and spending less time exercising shows why I keep the goals low and build them up slowly over time.  In a 4 week challenge, it is so easy to get off track and not have enough time to catch up.  Over time, I'll build the goal to something that is realistic for my continued success.

DIET:

  • Weight Control - Lose 4 lbs by end of challenge. Never weigh more than 167 lbs.

    CON +3

Started at 163.2 lbs on Monday.  Today I am 162.4 lbs with a low of 161.6 lbs in Week 2.  With a week to go, it is definitely possible to hit my goal.

Progress:  3 House Work (so much cleaning, laundry, and yard work), 3 Charity (two donations and Extra Life setup), 3 Webmaster (3 major updates), 3 Toastmaster (2 speeches and 1 contest), 3 Family Activities (Comic Con, hiking, and birthday), 3 Work tasks, 1 Home Renovation (repairing deck screen), 1 Auto Maintenance (replace one flat tire)  = 20 Tasks
Done here, but I've got oil to change for both cars (not immediate need, but I'd like to get it done soon) plus I want to check out the brakes and steering lubrication and a few open home renovation projects to complete.

162.4 lbs this morning.

I injured my back play racquetball.  I thought it was minor but it lingered all weekend.  Saturday, I was on meds and icing most the day playing Minecraft with the kids.  We got out to visit a comic book store running a $1 a book sale.  I picked up some GI Joe books to add to my small collection and a few things for the kids.  The girls got their first Magic The Gathering decks.  My oldest picked out "The Princess Bride" sleeves.  I was a little jealous.  She also kicked my Hydra deck's butt with her Unlikely Alliances Eldritch Moon deck.  Sunday I was able to take the dog of a 30 min walk (he ran me a little), change the oil on both cars, do laundry, dishes, and cook dinner, so I'm recovering quickly now.  I still have pain but it is manageable.

161.8 lbs.  I ate salad with carrots and peppers, an apple for lunch.  Dinner was chicken nachos with pepper and onion.  I had some ice cream which I should have skipped.  But I am doing well.

Recovery is going well.  I ran this morning, but only a mile.  My right hip and leg was pretty sore midway through so I'm glad I took it easy.  Icing and stretching is expediting the healing.

Physical therapy and icing this morning.  Feeling better with less pain and stiffness.  Unfortunately, I think I caught a cold, but I'm hoping it's just allergies since I hadn't been taking the medicine.

162.0 lbs.  Looks like making it under 160 lbs is not in the cards for this challenge as I've plateaued a bit, but I'm going to work my butt off this weekend to see if I can make it happen anyway.  My back is better as I had no pain last night and ran 2 miles with no issues this morning, so racquetball Friday, hike Saturday, run Sunday.  I just have to figure out how to handle the kids, dogs, and lunch around the van recall repairs on Saturday.  One looks like a long repair time so I might want to leave and get a loaner.  I need to call them today to get that setup.

Diet for the weekend is up in the air.  Could be leftovers for lunch, but I may take the kids out to lunch Saturday or dinner Sunday.  Portion control will be more important than what I eat, but I will do my best to get veggies in and starches out.  I need to avoid cheese and soda as those are the big hurdles for weight loss for me.

For Extra Life, it is Table Top Appreciation Weekend, so I'm cramming it in.  Friday night, I'm GMing an RPG for my kids and a couple of their friends.  Should be fun and relaxing since it is mostly just an imagination adventure I made up with very little focus on rules and dice rolls.  Saturday night, I am GMing my first adult RPG.  I'm doing a We Be Goblins Pathfinder.  I need to read up more on the rules to be better prepared, but the adventure is pretty simple.  I hope my throat and voice are feeling better by then.  I've got a little cold or allergy congestion going on.  Sunday afternoon, there is a game I could go to, but the kids may not want to go play games there.  Game day decision.  Plus, I may want to stay home and watch NFL Sunday Ticket even though the Jets play tonight (that's when I'll get my GM prep done).

161.2 lbs, a new low!  Maybe under 160 lbs is possible.  I just have to stay up late watching the Jets beat the Bills in a close game every day.

Racquetball this morning and ice on the back now.  It is feeling good.

I did my studying for GMing.  I'm ready to run the games, but I will need a good list of things for the characters to hallucinate.

Closing weight: 160.8 lbs

I'm calling that a ground pounding success.  I lost a full pound over the weekend to finish the challenge strong.  This morning I ran further and harder than I've run in over a year.  Probably since 2013 when I ran my last 5k.  Right now I'm running well more than 5k each week and sometimes hitting 5k in a day.  My back feels great.  I've decided to ice every day after a run.  It appears to help heal soreness a lot more than I initially thought.  Plus, as I get older, it'll be a good habit to already have developed.

This weekend was Extra Life Table Top Appreciation Weekend, so to promote my Extra Life event, I ran 2 RPGs, one Friday night for a group of kids 6-13 years old and one Saturday night for a small group of friends (my first time GMing for adults).  Both were so much fun and I learned a lot about the difference in styles.

For the kids, the imagery and background is really important to draw them in and needs to be included in long combat battles with lots of dice rolling.  It is even better to skip the dice and let them describe things and get creative.  The dice get in the way of progressing the game.

For the adults, the background description is only necessary when it is important.  It is better to get NPC involved and describe them and give them voice and personality.  That is an area where I am going to continually struggle with a lot more preparation and practice.  I feel it would be best to run the same game again, with different PCs of course, to get more practice.  I have some friends who I could try it with who missed out on Saturday.  Our regular GM has been doing it for years and I could see how experience is essential when it comes to NPCs and creatures.

I think it would be better to move away from a fantasy environment and delve into a genre which I know a lot better and my players might be less familiar: GI Joe, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Robotech would be good themes for me to use.  I could create a futuristic universe of my own based off a more obscure show or movie from my favorites like Dinosaucers, Ice Pirates, Space Rangers, or Killjoys.  I have a pretty good idea about how to run a Star Wars campaign.  The Rebels animated show could be a good source for quest and encounter ideas.  I have a New Jedi Order sourcebook which I can use for basic rules and such.  It will also help with the setting I wanted to use.  Before The Force Awakens, but after Luke Skywalker goes into hiding.  Or maybe right after Return of the Jedi in a remote part of the galaxy where the Empire is prevalent.

Anyway, I'll write up my grades soon and get set for the next challenge!

Awesome work my fellow Jedi!     That is so great.  Super proud of all that you've accomplished and it's been fun following along with you.    Excited to see where you go next.

Great insight on the GM-ing differences there.    I don't know what systems/books you have, but Fantasy Flight Games made a series of Star Wars RPGs (I am currently playing in one, getting ready to do my first time GM'ing another.)  I've really really enjoyed it.  It's a bit of an investment, but I think they also sell starter kits.   It follows canon Star Wars universe stuff too.  Super fun.

May the force be with you NickD!    Great work.

Yeah, I've looked into the newer Star Wars Kits.  I want to avoid specialized dice for the player, which Star Wars tend to use.  If I go that route, I'd probably need to work out substitutes for the dice so players would not need to get new dice.

There are apps for the new star wars dice, one is even free.   (Though all of us at my table agree that the sound of dice splashing is therapeutic and cannot be replaced.)  Hehe.

My Main Quest and Mission:

My mission is to be the best Jedi I can be. My main quest is always to enhance my overall health, fitness, and knowledge to be prepared for whatever challenges life could throw at me. As a Jedi, I need to be able to help people, whether that is a life threatening situation or just a charitable one. There is no boss level in Jedi training, there is only tomorrow.

Success!  I would like to focus more on the knowledge area in helping others.  My health and fitness are progressing nicely.  I'd like to add self-defense to that in the near future.

World 2 Level 5 Challenge Grades:

FITNESS:

  • Work Up a Sweat - 500 minutes of conditioning training for the entire challenge.

    DEX +2, STA +3

A - I kicked total butt in my running.  I have a solid routine to carry over to the next challenge!

  • Stretch and Strengthen - 520 minutes of exercises and stretches for the entire challenge.

    STR +2, DEX +1

A - I kicked total butt in my stretching and exercising.  I have new exercises to add to my routines.  I better understand where I am with my progress in healing my back and neck and how I can continue to build on that progress by sticking to my physical therapy, stretching, stressing reps, sets, quickness, and reduced rest time instead of lifting heavy, and routinely icing after workouts.

DIET:

  • Weight Control - Lose 4 lbs by end of challenge. Never weigh more than 167 lbs.

    CON +3

A - I started at 163.2 lbs on August 22nd.  I finished at 160.8 lbs on September 19th.  Solid progress losing 2.4 lbs, but not close enough to my goal for complete success.  I did destroy the second half of the goal as I never weighed more than 164 lbs, which means I maintained stability in my weight control throughout 4 weeks which will lead to future success.  My weight loss is plateauing, which means I should look at body measurements instead of just weight for next challenge.

A - More butt kicking.  I added more areas to the list and knocked out a ton of high priority tasks.  Incorporating a reward and consequence has been really helpful.  My wife identified that we may be playing too much in our free time together and not getting to the bigger projects.  She works weekends, so we have very little time where we can tackle a project together.  The focus has been on smaller projects where single parenting is easier.  When we are together, we usually have plans for something fun.  I am having trouble motivating the kids to be useful as well.  The dogs are also a distraction and a roadblock for getting things done.  I am working on solutions.
