Starpuck: Seeking the Force

Recommended Posts

Commitment has been a hurdle for some time now.    Always eager to begin, reluctant to continue.

"A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one, a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away to the future, the horizon. Never his mind on where he was . Hmm? What he was doing."  - Yoda to Luke, EP IV

My hurdle has always been looking to the past.  What I used to be able to do, what I have previously accomplished, where I was before this or that happened.   It's self defeating and takes away from the accomplishments I earn in the present.     I am largely going to be repeating my last challenge, albeit with more side quests.    I faded away there during and after my vacation (as I had feared might happen) and we're going into fall and winter.     I normally gain weight at this time of the year --- this year it's more dangerous because I did not LOSE weight over the summer like I typically do.   I've taken a nice long break from tracking food and calories, and even lost almost 2lbs while on vacation. (Since gained back... damn Oreo addiction.)    I want to try and do the impossible.   I want to lose weight over the winter this year!

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no Ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

There is no death, there is only the Force.

GOAL #1 - There is no emotion, there is peace.

This is not to rid myself of all emotion, emotions are good.   But the focus will be to counter the negative emotions!   Like, stress, anxiety, frustration, lack of patience, etc.  My form of meditation will be prayer.   Because I'm really bad at this.  Really really really bad.   This will be a perfect chance to work on developing a new habit.    So as not to overwhelm, and to keep things attainable, we're starting off with a very small goal, and allowing some other things to count toward this.

Prayer, Meditation, Yoga:  3x/week

waterfall_meditation_by_raikoh_illust-d6

GOAL #2 - There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

It is time once again to focus on knowledge.   The Dark Side would see us fail by ignoring what information we have access to!    I will return to tracking calories in and out for the duration of this challenge.    At that point, I will see what results were had, and adjust from there.   Four weeks is not that long - and this is not new to me.   It will go by fast, and I will have regained some baseline data.

Track Food and Exercise with MFP: 7x/week

Minimum to consume 1500, maximum based on exercise.

**Exceptions allowed during vacation to Isle Royale.    Track as best as I can, but no stress over it.

latest?cb=20060102001618

GOAL #3 - There is no passion, there is serenity

Newsflash.  When Starpuck gets into something "new", she tips the scales at a fast and hard 150% involved point.   I love a lot of things.  I need to become a better steward of my hobbies and passions.   I've just added a new thing I want to get into.   It's impossible to just keep adding plates, and things to plates.   I must learn to balance them.

Creative Outlets: 3x / week

Includes: art (sketching and digital), website/RPG projects, and the newcomer to the mix... sewing! (Attempting to learn to sew for costuming reasons.)

Step out of Routine, explore your world: 1x / week

Examples: A more significant hike, a bike ride in a new area, meeting with friends instead of playing online, doing things that others like even if it's not your favorite thing, try new things, pull out an old hobby, etc.

tumblr_inline_o1wdida0JI1twj7vo_500.png

GOAL #4 - There is no chaos, there is harmony.

Total freedom on the exercise front seems to not go so well.   Setting goals, on the other hand, seems to work well.  It allows me to better fit in the various types of training I want to accomplish -aka, harmony between my activities.

Force Lift: 2x/week engage in strength training.

Force Push: 2x/week engage in movement, pushing myself to run, bike, etc.

Force Balance will include yoga, and may be performed any number of times per week, but count toward my meditation goal.

1463922746-53de7f9509a85a5fb48fa7cddd732

GOAL #5 - There is no death, debt, there is only the Force.

An adulting goal.    Primarily, this will consist of writing out and sticking to a budget.   I realized that I am in a great place to save some money, if I just manage it better.    My vacations are over and paid for.  My weekend at the con will happen the day before this challenge starts.   There will be no reason for impulse spending or random purchases.

Step 1:  Write Budget

Step 2:  Follow Budget

Step 3:  Put $300 into savings by end of challenge.

Side Missions for this Challenge

Find the Jedi, and potentially, a master to train under.

- Join one of the small groups at my church, and/or get more involved in serving.

Join the Rebel Alliance

- Push past my comfort zone and get involved/accepted to the Rebel Legion

Fight in the Battle of Endor

- Potential goal here, not yet decided.   Do a forest photo shoot while in the U.P of Michigan.

Force powers; ForeSEE

- Stop procrastinating on finding a new eye doctor, and get in for an appt!

Oh it's happening.   I just told my sister that I've been requested by my Nerds to do a forest / Endor themed photoshoot.   Her reply?   We need to get me an ewok costume!!  (My sis is 17 years older than I am, and *not* a Star Wars geek!  So this is pretty awesome!)

I will absolutely confess that I stole that one line from your challenge JediNickD!    Thank you for putting it out there to inspire the rest of us Nerds!   I am hoping that I learn to recognize the journey!  I'm feeling really hopeful for it!

Following! I love that you've got a budgeting goal going on here.  That can definitely get lost especially in the vacation shuffle!  I'm excited to see what you get up to in your adventuring quests :D

I've done the budgeting before.  In fact, I had this great thing where I figured out about, on average, what I spent per week on all the various unplanned/special things... I totaled that up and withdrew that much in CASH on Monday morning.   When it was gone, it was gone.  Leftovers went into a jar on my desk.   Well, months later, I peeked into that jar, and Ih ad $80 sitting there randomly.  I used that as my spending cash for my ren faire outing!   It was so awesome!      I just want to be better at organizing my money.   So yeah, pretty stoked!

Awesome updates/news of the day:

- Rebel Legion peeps think my costume is pretty close to being ready and "looks really good for a quick find."   Super awesome news.

- Ordered my jedi food/energy capsules, they won't be here in time for the con, but I can build the costume up for final RL approval.

- Got MyFitnessPal all resituated for tracking.   I set my minimum net calories to what several formulas have said is my BRM  (1352).

- Got news that my new Fitbit delivered today, so I can charge that up and start wearing it tomorrow.

- Got myself out into the whse at lunch for a strength session - even though work was brutal crazy hectic busy!

Tonight's agenda may be to attempt to hem those tabard pieces.  *gulp*   So nervous.

This is an AWESOME idea! I'm usually pretty good with money (unless I discover some new thing i want to get into and then must buy every book on it ever, but that is neither here nor there) but Mr. Raxie sometimes has some problems and I might suggest this to him!! Thanks :D

Yesterday and today have felt a lot like this.

latest?cb=20070625230240

I've managed to keep in a solid mood and get stuff done, but whew, it's been tiring!'

I desperately needed to break out of my week of rest rut (legit injury needed rest last week, but then it was legit laziness by the weekend heh.)   So yesterday I lifted and today I walked ran - oops.  I was very sore still from DOMS, so brought only my Keen sandals and told myself 'walk at lunch, then stretch'.    Well walking got boring fast.   So I started jogging in between my walking... for a total distance of 3 miles... in Keens.   Ugh.   Foolish choices this one makes, mmm!   Toesies are so angry right now.

Budget Sorted!

Weekly "fun money" includes fast food, nice meals out with friends and allowance for purchases (movies, a hockey clinic, a random toy I'm convinced I need, etc.)

$80 a week, withdrawn on Mondays, will cover the FUNd.

Goal per month to put away $300 into general savings, and $100 into car maintenance savings.

Question is - do I just keep that savings in the same savings account?   Or do I open another one specifically for the car stuff?

Tonight is sewing...

http%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Fwp-content%2

Possibly at home pedi's with my sis!  (With beer!)

Then maybe some light SWTOR-ing on my Sith Inquisitor.   Maybe a chapter or two after that and then sleeps.   I NEED to be in bed no later than 11pm tonight as I lead into this exciting weekend!

Sewing??

722446.gif

My sis bailed me out again due to both of us having a lack of patience, and a lack of time.    I am not giving up though!    I WILL learn hew to sew my own costumes!!!!   Eventually.  Just... when I have more time than 3 days.    But, the tabards have been shortened to more acceptable lengths, so that's all set.    It is SUCH a hot costume.   Like immediate sweat, even in an AC house.   I am pretty sure I'll be dying hee.

Today was a strength day.

I workout in the warehouse.    In the far, far, back corner of the warehouse, where all our water pipes and other building junk is located.    Warehouses do not have AC.    At best, they have dock doors.   Our warehouse buts up to our office, so the office door is shut, which means there is no cross-flow for air in our warehouse.   So, we have a big industrial fan and a smaller industrial fan in our box to help it stay manageable when summer hits.   Because, ya know, the midwest might not be desert hot, or Gulf Coast humid, but ... it gets pretty close.   90's all summer, humidity in the 50-70% range.

Except today... there were no fans.  Boss who shares the box with me lost his AC at home, so took the fans home for the week.   Oh. Em. Gee guys.    I have never sweated this much!    Like, I felt sweat dripping from spots I didn't even know could sweat.   Like... the outside of my forearms.   My hands.  Face, obviously, from chin and nose simultaneously these beads of sweat flung themselves off my flesh like little cliff jumpers.   My arm looked like it was left out as the evening dew set... It was brutal.

But I did the whole thing and didn't quit!!

YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!

giphy.gif

Work is nuts with someone out, but I am hanging in there.   Tonight is D&D.   Tomorrow is a half day and then my awesome weekend of fun as I initiate my 13 year old nephew into the world of cons!   Many pics to come on THAT!

Weekend Recap before I start posting for the new challenge.

The con was great!!!    My nephew had a blast!   I had a blast!  I got some great chibi art of me and my kiddo too!

After we got back, we messed around with some "force" pictures!!!

I met with the Rebel Legion Nar Shaddaa base, and had a judge look at my current outfit!  Just need to get a belt sheath to hide my lace closure on my belt, and my food capsules (already on order) and sort out my inner tunic!!   He said I'm pretty much there!   so awesome!   And their costumes were AMAZING!  Check out that Chewie!

14102210_10210100691824176_6025256148158

Had my picture taken with a very wise old Jedi (who referred to me as 'Little One' and it was so damn cute!)!!

And the Emperor saw my nephew next to me while I was taking pictures, and he points to him and then finger curls a 'come here' gesture!  LOL!

It was awesome!!

It was a great time!!

If you're sensing a but, or a however... yeah.

Sunday, was the ultimate low after an ultimate high.   Troubles on the home-front, to put it vaguely.    I won't get into too much detail because I don't like airing laundry overly so, but I will say that in my family, anger was allowed, rage was not.   Sunday afternoon, an accident in the garage (one that no one even realized happened and was pretty minor) caused my BIL to go into full blown rage mode.     I honestly do not understand how anyone can see this kind of reaction as appropriate or helpful.    He came in screaming and accusing and has pushed me so far over the stress line that I'm feeling physically mucked up over it.   I left the house and didn't return until after everyone was in bed.  But tonight, I have to deal with interaction and so I am still all messed up and stressed out.

It means that getting going on Day 1 of challenge is not working out so well.    I'm tired physically and emotionally, and my stomach is pretty upset.    Neither things great for trying to get a weight lifting work out in.

I leave for vacation on Thursday, so I'm pretty much talking myself into this based on logistics.  If I don't work out today, I can't work out Wed... which means at best I get one strength session this week.    I need to do this.  Even if it's just a 'show up and go through the motions'.    I don't want my week one to be trash because of this.        I also need to get some drawing going tonight - but honestly... man, all my motivation and inspiration is being buried by the stress right now.     I'm not sure how to get around it, but I'm going to just fake it till I make it in the mean time.

Today's Plan:

Strength

Drawing

Write up the Tracking Sheet for NF

Update Star Wars Site

I'm sorry you had such a rough day my friend. The con pics look great, by the way. Of course everyone knows it wasn't ok for your BIL to blow up like that, and it is okay for you to have a problem with his behavior. It sounds like you are describing discomfort so severe it is affecting you physically. You are perfectly normal for feeling that way. What isn't normal, however, is your resolve and determination not to let this event get you down. You are already planning to get yourself into physical activity, even if you don't feel like it. You are already planning your recovery from this event. That makes you better than normal, that makes you an NF Ranger! You are The Amazing Starpuck, and you will Jedi your way through these difficulties and Ranger your way to completing your goals for the week.

What Tank said, basically. He's so very eloquent with these things...

Living with family can be tough, no matter how close you are. But like Tank said, you've already made some plans to help you through, even though all you wanted to do was curl up into a giant ball of stress, and you went right to that plan making rather than letting it get you really stuck. I hope you find a way to mend the bridge he seems to want to burn, eventually, or he makes an attempt to mend it himself. That kind of tension is never good for anyone involved, especially in your living space...

Thanks for the support all, it's really appreciated.

I actually managed to get a couple notches on my challenge belt due to the kerfuffle on the home front.    I spent time Sunday night and Monday day, just quick little bouts, praying.   I also reflected on a sermon that my pastor once gave, and triggered a 'whoa' moment with me.    I wrote a letter to my BIL, telling him that I forgave him for hurting me, and that I wanted to be there for him as he tries to sort out this rage monster that creeps up on him.    I put it in a card and attached it to a big eyed Beanie Baby phone holder thing, lol.    When I got home from work, I put it on the table and told him it was for him.    He was already apologizing and felt badly about what happened.   We spent the next half hour talking; deep, honest kind of talking and ended with a solid bear hug.  So things are sorted.

This was definitely out of my comfort zone, and took a bit of a leap of faith for me to do.

I did a pretty solid workout at lunch yesterday, and ate healthy and within normal portions all day- which is pretty shocking considering stress + pending sharks!    I did not draw last night because I had no muse.   I played some SWTOR and spoke with my friend on the phone about roleplaying things.    Tonight is watching some Clone Wars with friend, and hopefully getting home early enough to get a bit of drawing in.  Unless I start sketching at work again... which I might!

Oh, I DID finish up my last piece on Sunday night before gaming started; so I will share here.

Rohan, our Chiss pilot and smugglery type!

Glad to hear you've got things sorted with your BIL. A lot of people would have held in the resentment, but a cool down period followed by frank talk on both sides seems a much wiser way to deal with conflict. And congrats on making it through the stressy times without going crazy on your diet AND getting a workout in. A great start despite the wrenches!

Does she have a friend named Gondor?

The Con pictures were amazing. Great writeup.

Also, well done sorting your emotions and dealing with your family in such a positive manner. I have much I can learn from you.

Tank stole the good Rohan/Gondor line.

Haha, yeah that is the first thing I thought of too, but my friend actually has some awesomeness behind the name of Rohan.   So awesome, I saved the email that he shared it in!

Chiss names come from a combination of the origin colony, the ruling class, and personal.
Breakdown:
Rhygar' oha ' Nroth
Ruling  Pers  Colony

Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars fiction is a Chiss.  His full name is:
Mitth'raw'nuruodo

Pretty neat huh!?

Thanks guys.  I am too.     I'm glad that I've grown in that regard, and hope to continue to do so.   Plus, my being that way, could enlighten the other side of such debates to consider that course of action in the future.     But yup!  That's all cleared up now and I'm ready to move on.

(YESTERDAY)

Day 2 went down pretty okay, except I am dealing with body parts that are threatening to break or shut down.   (Not cool body parts, not cool!)  My left hip has a crick in it.  It feels like a neck crick, but in my hip, on the outside.   This is the same leg that has the sore hip flexor area part, and was the same one that both full force kneed that ninja wall AND got landed on during hockey.    I definitely need a chiro appt after my trip.   And I'm unsure how well I can lift today with this... might have to just omit anything that causes pain there.

I had my lunch hour work out and opted for a run.   Guys.   I've been bike riding all summer to avoid heat stroke... lol.  So, I figured I could run a mile, walk a bit, run a mile walk about.  How about no, Scott?    ~Dr.Evil     I did a LOT of walk alternating breaks, and STILL ended up burning 454 calories to go the 3.1 mile route!

Food was pretty okay.  I ended up eating out for dinner, but still tracked.   I had a cup of soup and a half order of potato skins.

Watched some Clone Wars with my boyz and then came home to play some SWTOR.   I DID get a bit of sketch time in between calls at work.  My quick sketches are getting much quicker!   And I'm getting better at turning very loose sketches into more detailed rough drafts for inking!   That's fun!
