I have gone from 26% bodyfat to 22% bodyfat since starting nerd fitness. Meh, I don't care. Because, to me, it's a side effect.

So many people are trying to look like LOOK  a superhero, so few people are training to BE like a superhero.

Everyone should be specialized, no one should be overspecialized...

Crossfit got us closer... but I think MOVNAT actually has the baseline answer...

If we are specializing too much, we are still deconditioning our general fitness and overspecializing

Still recovering from injury. So wisdom/prudence tells me I shouldn't do something, Optimism tells me what's left is what I should do.

Combatives:

-Shouldn't: Spar (no BJJ rolling or kickboxing, no strikes to the body, no ballistic kicking)

-Should: Work on form, shadow box, test for MACP Level II (in fact, test is tomorrow)

Cross Training:

-Shouldn't: Sprint, work abs, split squats, planks, rows.

-Should: Jump Rope, Jinga

Mixed Movement

-Shouldn't: Climb using legs, swim using legs, sprint, high line vaults.

-Should: Roll, Break fall, most floor work (Acrobatics, Handstands), balance beam work, isolated pulling, short precision jumps.

Line between Hard and Retard.

Spent the weekend in a neck brace trying to heal up from exacerbating a previous sprained trap muscle. I think I'm just going to take a month off from everything and heal up. My family and friends tell me that I can't take a whole month off. Not taking that bet, they are probably right.

See you next challenge.

Ok. Not doing anything....lasted one day.

Went to a conventional human hamster wheel gym and did some safe machine weight exercises for maintenance, not gains.

If I was healthy, it would have been a horrible workout.

Also went to Combatives class and coached some new guys, no workout. But I can official coach level 0's now because I'm a Level II as of last week, lol.

I am REALY am a "feel sorry for myself" wangsty 14 year old when it comes to being injured.

Slipping back into bad habits.... Because black and white thinking makes it all or nothing. Can't just freaking be happy with mediocrity.

Not doing routine maintenance.

Ran out of clean workout clothes, so even if I wanted to work out I couldn't.

Unopened mail piling up.

Need to go to the dentist...

Failing to excel at basic tasks.

And.

McDonalds for breakfast.

Sugar Coke on the way to work.

So, I will now stop being a whiner about how much I whine and go gym and stretch in my work cloths because at least that's something.

What form of combatives are you doing, and how limiting do you think the injury is?

+1 to what Sara said.  Recovery challenges are just as valid (if not more challenging) than normal challenges.  Because we know we can do so much more and want to go, and recovery is stupid and should happen immediately.

The Combatives program at work is based on the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP), I just made level II last week (worked through the injuries to test).

But our program is more than the standard MACP, we have two civilian coaches, a ground fighting coach and a standup fighting coach.

2/3rds of our training is ground fighting (Brazilian Jujitsu based with some catch wrestling/MMA ground and pound)

Our ground grappling coach also belts us in traditional BJJ as well as the official MACP ground training.

1/3 of our training is stand up (MMA standards based (Boxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai)) + some Japanese Jujitsu based weapons takeaways and throws.

Our striking coach is an MMA trainer and corners for several local MMA fighters.

Anyone who specializes in any of the specific martial arts above would say we suck, but the point is to put ourselves in a bunch of situations and work through them all. Kind of the reverse of Krav Maga who 2/3rds standing and 1/3 on the ground.

The only real problem I have with MACP is that it teaches closed fist striking to head...which is just a bad idea without gloves on.

All of my injuries are sprains based on me being stronger than my joints. The solution is working on technique over brute strength.

Then you should also be familiar with the TACFIT program. That's probably the closest modern analog to what I do.

Anyway, the older styles most of what you practice is based on actually have quite a bit of restorative techniques and exercises you might want to look into. Check some books on classical pugilism and club swinging. The exercises in those could help with your injured trap muscle.

Just flipped through the manual. It was actually pretty good. I do have a tendency to jab back fisted like the book. I have an Indian club, but I really only use it for things like barbarian squats. I have a friend (former college power lifter and former green beret) he does most of his workouts now with Indian clubs and home made maces.

You can do a ton with clubs, light weights are your friend for restorative practice.

Monstery in the above promotes a vertical fist and straight punches with a lower guard position. He gets very into the mechanics behind an effective punch.

Ah, so this is where the party is. :)

I echo what's been said about recovery challenges. They suck and they're the best thing ever. You love and hate them both in fairly equal measure.

These are also the challenges that show you just how important diet is, and give you the permission to eat well even if you aren't necessarily working out in tandem with it.

Hope you feel better soon!
