EricMN's Jedi Training: Ascending the Sacred Spire

The sacred spire was a natural peak around which the Jedi Temple was built on Coruscant. Once a sacred place to the native Coruscanti, the mountain contained a Force nexus which was contained within huge, black stone walls.- Wookiepedia

During this challenge I'll be continuing on my 2016 mission to earn five Spartan Trifectas. Each Trifecta comes from completing one of each of the three Spartan Race distances - Sprint, Super, Beast. I completed my first Trifecta back in May when I survived the Montana Spartan Beast.

spartan_trifecta_stats.jpg

I've been nursing some minor injuries, training, and doing a few shorter or less-brutal races since that race in preparation for my two biggest challenges of this year:

breckenridge.jpg

The Breckenridge Spartan Beast on 27 August

killington.jpg

The Killington Spartan Beast on 17 September

There's a strong chance these are the two most brutal courses on the entire Spartan calendar: Breckenridge due to the altitude, and Killington due to the fact that last year, there were complaints that the course was not hard enough. I'm more than a little terrified of both.

Being terrified isn't going to help me complete either event. Training will. I'll continue with my usual regimen at my gym, which is heavy weights on Tuesday and Thursday, except on race weeks, when I'll skip lifting on Thursday but do a body weight set instead. I'm consistent enough with this that it doesn't need to be a goal, it's just a thing that I do.

Goal: Ascend the Spire

Knightfall1.jpg

This is Minnesota and there is no "Up" here, not like there is in Colorado and Vermont. We have a couple hills - and by "a couple" I mean, like, ten - but no mountains. I've been running hills all summer, and emphasizing significant change in climb when I've run trail, while being smart about this ankle problem I've had since I limped down the mountain in Montana. I tweaked it again in Illinois at the end of July when I ran the Chicago Savage Race (also a blast, btw), but it's healing and caused me less issues than my right last weekend at the MN Terrain Race. As long as I continue to wear my brace, I should be fine.

Goal: Run 3x per week, 2x with significant elevation change.

Goal: Hold Fast

This thing will be back on the course at Killington. Holy crap. DO YOU SEE THIS? LOOK AT IT. This looks horrible. Beyond the fact that there's a swim in a lake in Vermont in September, I struggle with rope grips like this. If only there were somewhere that I could do grip-specific training...

logo-small.png

Oh yeah. They opened a gym five minutes from my office.

Goal: 1x/week training session at Ninjas United

Goal: Strength Flows from the Force

I'm stressed out. All. The. Time. I have a senior-level software development job that has taken more time in the last year than it did in the first three, and that doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. I have a second job as a personal trainer that takes time. I am a single parent of five kids, including two in middle school, which starts back up in three weeks. I am a volunteer leader with my church youth group. This year I accepted a nomination to the church board because literally nobody else would do it. I've adjusted my race schedule for the remainder of the year to compensate, but I'm flat-out tired all the time.

It's time to make sure I can feel the flow. And I suck at this part.

Goal: Spend 30 minutes per day in meditation and prayer.

I'm going to do my best to keep this thread current and active. Keep me accountable, Rangers.

Very, very cool! I'm excited to hear reports from this place! Breckenridge is one I would LOVE to run for the elevation and scenery alone. You're the man, Eric :). Following.

So I'll toss a little silver lining at ya.  Breckenridge is not somewhere I like to ski because the runs are short and it isn't very steep (that being a relative thing mind you).  I hope you plan on getting into the area a couple of days before the race to acclimate to the lack of O2.  I wish you luck on that run in particular.  If it were any other year, I would totally consider taking off for the weekend to head north and watch ya!  As for all the rest, hang in there my Jedi Master,  we can do this, we can do it all!

Can't wait to hear about the races.  I too hope you get a few days to get used to the elevation before the Colorado Spartan.  Lake swim in VT in Sept?  I would think that would be a breeze for a crazy guy in Minnisota.  Good luck with everything.  Take that time daily for yourself!  You will be so much better for it.  Have fun getting the kids back to school!

Less than five days away, now, from Boss Battle No. 2 for 2016. I'm excited and terrified.

There's a live cam at the resort where the race is being held. Here's what appears to be the finish line:

venue.jpg

http://www.beaverrun.com/webcam.html - if I were a betting man, I would expect to cross through this screen after 4pm MST.

In the meantime, I'm on this challenge.

Goal 1: Run 3x/Week.

3 sucktastic miles in 82-degree heat. Also, 1 mile on the incline treadmill for steady-state cardio.

20160822_hylandrun.jpg

Goal 2: Ninjas United

I'll be hitting up the gym tonight for their OCR Prep workout.

Goal 3: Meditation and prayer, 30 minutes per day.

This is going to be the hardest goal. I can make time for a back and biceps workout but have problems with this. I did change my morning drive routine and music - I took a different route and turned the radio to something that helped keep me centered and low-key. I'll be more mindful of carving out 30 minutes today.

Awesome work so far!

I hear you on the prayer/meditation being the hardest part!   I took it easy on myself and started with 3x a week...  it's so hard for me to slow down.   I sometimes wonder if I'd be miserable without having things to juggle, or a to do list a mile long.

I'll just keep working on this!

Patience!   For the jedi there is time to <insert all things> as well!

Be amazing at your race!!!!   And please share awesome race pics!

Tuesday

If I'm currently excited but definitely terrified with Breckenridge looming on Saturday, and "terrified" is an order of magnitude modifier for "fear", exactly what kinds of "suffering" has this race got in store for me?

As far as "hate", BattleFrog announced yesterday that they are suspending their race calendar effective immediately and refunding everyone's paid registrations. Suck. I did BattleFrog Extreme - the multi-lap option for the BattleFrog race series where you can do as many laps of the 8k course as you can as long as you start the last lap before the cutoff - and it was one of the most fun days of racing I've ever had. People in the OCR community are in the various stages of mourning.

2016-08-24-08.47.38.png

Nothing good ever comes in a sentence that begins "The board met this morning..."

Goal 1: Run 3x/week.

I'll do an hour of ski hills at Hyland today, but nothing yesterday.

Goal 2: Ninjas United

Yep! 1.5 hours at Ninjas United. Mostly rings and work on the 8-foot wall after the calisthenics circuit. I am out of shape.

Goal 3: 30 minutes per day in meditation and prayer.

I spent 30 minutes in quiet meditation before I left for the Ninja gym. Keeping my radio tuned low-key during drive time is helping me stay calmer, as evidenced by the fact that I flipped off fewer people during rush hour today.

Hahaha, altitude kicks my ass!   Deep breaths seem a tease for me!   Granted, more frequent, smaller breaths, just lead to hyperventilating.

LOL!  You got this though, you are stronger than you think!
