Athaclena - The Reboot Continues

Overview\A bit about me

I'm an IT Consultant (yes - lots of travel at times) who has been at least a bit overweight most of my life (ok, a few years in HS\College I probably wasn't - but was surrounded by skinny people and felt I was).  I'm essentially a mesomorph - I will NEVER be "skinny".  I can only hope for a muscular\athletic build.  You know the 5' Mexican Olympic gymnast that was dubbed "fat" at 99 pounds?  That was me in HS.  I don't ever expect to see 99 pounds again - but an athletic 130/140 I could totally live with.  And yes - I was 99 - 115 pounds and "fat" through college.

I've been - somewhat desperately - trying to find the right balance\things I need to do to get back to a heathier weight\lifestyle.  I'm tired of being tired.  I'm tired of being overwhelmed by life\work.  I'm just tired.  As I recently read from someone's weight loss journey - I'm not fat because I'm lazy (trust me - my co-workers know I'm not lazy LOL) - I'm lazy because I'm fat!

So - I'm working on finding those little things that keep me motivated, that will keep me on track on making those little incremental changes that will have big impacts on my energy and life in general.  Increased energy = get more done - and have fun doing it!  But I have to have the energy to get started.  Vicious cycles suck!

So - I've found a couple of little things I can do that make me feel better - so I'm more likely to keep up with them and hopefully lead to other little changes and so on.  This is tweaked from the tail end of the last challenge (where I just jumped in - not wanting to wait another 2-3 weeks for this one to start)!

I'll be tweaking this as I go - and what I focus on may change week to week - especially when I travel - and there's Dragon*Con in the middle (so getting exercise from walking won't be a problem - I'll be focusing on food).  So - here we go!

Diet

  • Yogurt - one per day when it's available (I'll be looking for a good pro-biotic supplement for those days it's not)
    • I've been doing good here - but need to keep it in focus
  • Veggie - at LEAST one serving per day
  • Take the supplements that I've found to give me a boost - DAILY rather than when I remember because I'm wondering why I feel like poo

Fitness

  • Move - every day - at LEAST 5 minutes - work on strength, mobility/flexibility, cardio.  Some ideas:
    • Get out and walk (easy enough when I travel and schlep through airports - not likely to happen while at home until late Sept when it's not so frickin' HOT)
    • Body weight workout
    • Yoga
    • Squats
    • Stretching
    • SOMETHING

Level Up Your Life

  • In bed by 11pm "school\work" nights - midnight on the weekend.  Stop staying up so dang late!
  • Every day - take 1 task I've been avoiding - work on it for at least 15 minutes.  There's enough work\life stuff that applies here to go several challenges - I need to stop avoiding and get stuff DONE so we can get our life in order and move where we WANT to live.

Your challenge sounds great, good luck!  May I ask which supplements you take?  I made a mistake of taking ALL THE THINGS when I started my T2D reversal, and now I don't know what was actually working and what wasn't.

Supplements I take - not a ton - I try to eat a varied diet:

  • Ginseng\Ginsana - Memory and a bit of a morning boost - take 1/2 dose
  • Vitamin C - because - I find I get fewer colds when traveling when I do
  • Kelp - family history of Thyroid issues - so take it for the touch of extra iodine

I won't be able to post everyday (especially with travel next week and vacation the next 2) - but I hope to at least update a couple of times per week.

So far this week:

Diet

  • Yogurt - Doing good on the yogurt front - need to track down a probiotic supplement
  • Veggie - doing well here - salads!
  • Take the supplements - hit & miss - did take them today

Fitness

  • Move - Well - so far so good.  Had to hike through airports and had team things involving working out - will need some motivation when home as I'm exhausted - so need to focus here!

Level Up Your Life

  • Bed Time - up until 11:30 last night - but otherwise doing well
  • Have done at least one thing I've been avoiding each day - need to keep this up - first thing in the morning seems to work well - get it out of the way!

Thanks for this, I've also tried Vit C and kelp, but was not convinced (had 4 colds in the 3 months I took Vit C!)  Great that they work for you!  Also, keep up the good work with the challenge! :D

tldr; - Doing good for the most part - need to focus on getting in my supplaments

Update

Left to fly 3/4 of the way across the 'ole USA on Sunday (Atlanta to Phoenix) and got back last night.... So was in "travel" mode...

The Good:

I'm keeping up with eating less junk and more yogurt and have for the most part been in bed on time.

Tuesday night the brain wouldn't shut down (pretty much a knock-down drag out w\a coworker - we take different approaches to things) and I ended up w\only 3ish hours of sleep - but I was in bed TRYING to sleep - so technically I'm 100% for on time bed time.  The good news is, I stayed awake on the flight back (watching Deadpool helped LOL) so was able to crash when I got home at 10ish ET.  I'm still exhausted this morning - but it would have been worse if I had napped then not been able to sleep until 2 or 3am.....

I've also been moving more - even if it's not a "workout" - I took the stairs a fair amount in the hotel and definitely walked more than normal (we walked to dinner rather than drove).  Of course, there were 2 - 4 hour plane trips in there - but I did at least SOMETHING more than "normal" vegging every day.

I'm also almost caught up on some work things I've been avoiding.  So I'll be trying to stay on top of not getting behind\ignoring those icky tasks while starting to work on the "personal" things I've been avoiding.  I even got up one of the sets of black-out\energy efficient curtains in the living room.  I should have done that YEARS ago.  That one set already is making a difference in the temp of the living room in the afternoon.  2 more important sets to go and I'll decide if I'm putting up the other 2.  Gods I need to move where it's cooler in the summer - it'll be dungeon-like with the curtains - but I'll take dungeon over sauna at this point.

The Bad:

I'm not keeping up with my supplaments.  At all. So I need to focus there (and, uh, go take them now in fact).

I'm home for the next 7 days - then it's Dragon*Con.  I'm not going to worry about exercise (because there will be metric tons of walking) - but will be focusing on drinking plenty of water and not eating like crap.  And having fun :)

Checking in.....

I'm out of yogurt and haven't replaced it (so - fail) - BUT I have probiotics coming in today so I'll do that.

Supplements - I need to figure out what I need to do to make this happen (with food)
Veggies - hey - I'm doing something right :)
Moving - I'm moving - not as much or as formally as I should - but still making progress here
Bed time - I have seriously been failing here.  Went to bed at 3:30 am last night\this morning.  I'm just not getting tired - but I should be getting my but in bed anyway *sigh*

So - I need to stay focused.  Workouts this week won't be a problem this week (there will be crap-tons of walking) - bed time will be suspended during vacation - so I'll be focusing on taking my supplements and eating right....

And I need to get my camera together so I can post lots of Dragon*Con Cosplay pictures for those of you interested :)

Likely my last post for a few days....

Everything is packed for D*Con - got my probiotics.  There will be TONS of walking.  I found\packed the camera.

So - for the next few days - the focus is on food.  Make good choices.  Eat veggies.

I'll check back after Labor Day!

So - I spent time hanging out and not taking photos - but I'll track some public ones down and link.  There were some seriously AWESOME cosplay going on!

I'll be back to my "normal" goals tomorrow - but here's a summary of my D*Con goals.

1) Take my probiotic daily - Yep.  I skipped my other supplements because my sleep\eat schedule is ALWAYS mucked up - so I didn't wan't to chance doing my sensitive tummy in (because who wants to be nauseous at con)
2) Focus on eating real food.  Over the course of 5 days - I had Chic Fil A twice, and a Diner Burger\Fries once.  Other than that? Real frickin food and AT LEAST one veggie per day.  Thank goodness my favorite mall food spot makes their stuff from scratch and one of their veggie dishes is a favorite of mine.  Seriously.  I used to work near there and I told them I'd only do a lunch & learn if my favorite spot catered and their eggplant was on the menu :)
3) Fitness - considering I pretty much don't workout w\o a cattle prod - I'm calling the following step counts a MAJOR win:

  • Thu 12,325 steps
  • Fri     6,798 steps
  • Sat    9,463 steps
  • Sun   6,386 steps (Sunday is always recover from Saturday day LOL)
  • Mon 12,820 steps

Yesterday and today I washed clothes and basically recovered.  I am NOT looking forward to opening up my email tomorrow - but it's back to the grind!

Oh - here's one photo spread for you! http://collider.com/dragon-con-2016-cosplay-images/

Checking in to follow the fun!

Looks like you're making pretty solid progress on sticking to your goals so far. Out of curiosity, do you have a really specific, set time/habit for when you get your movement in? I know that when I was trying to work in regular movement and exercise in my schedule, I had to pick a time in advance and stick to it, otherwise I never got around to doing anything.

Keep up the great work! :D

Thanks!  And no - I don't.  Which is probably part of my problem.  I know I feel better doing it in the AM - but getting out of bed (especially when I have a bout of insomnia which is what's precipitated my go the eff to bed goal - or am travelling and keep whacked hours - like 4am car service to the airport) seems to get in the way.  I'm TRYING to do little things like 10 squats after bio breaks or after every meeting - but I haven't made that an actual habit yet.  Honestly - if I did just those two - I'd be doing 100-150 squats a day.  Damn.  I really need to do that!

Saturday, 9/10 Roundup

tldnr; That sleep thing escapes me - and need to consciously do something physically active

Diet

  • Yogurt/Probiotic - Yep - getting groceries today.  While home I hope to have yogurt + probiotic.
  • Veggie - Yep
  • Take the supplements - Yes - pill bags (reusing them, the ones I got are pretty thick) seem to be the way to go here - still need to remember to TAKE them, but now I can "grab and go"

Fitness

  • Move - every day - at LEAST 5 minutes - According to my fitness app - did more than "usual" yesterday - so I'll call this 1/2 done since it wasn't a conscious thing.  Today is grocery shopping - so my step count will be good.  Need to add in a bit more....

Level Up Your Life

  • In bed by midnight on the weekend - No - Not even close - sometime after 2:30 am....
  • Tackle a task I've been avoiding - Worked on clearing off the dining room table.  Still more to do - hope to finish that up today as well as clean the floors....

Sunday, 9/11 Roundup

tldnr; That sleep thing is still taunting me  - maybe I just need to set an alarm to go to bed (how f'd up is that?)

Diet

  • Yogurt/Probiotic - Probiotic taken - yogurt obtained
  • Veggie - Yep - a SALAD for lunch (with fried chicken - but it was on a salad) - and salad fixings obtained so I can have at least one side salad per day.
  • Take the supplements - Yep - pill bags rule

Fitness

  • Move - every day - at LEAST 5 minutes - A fair amount of walking while grocery shopping.  I hadn't been in a while so I got a TON of groceries as I needed to restock quite a few essentials...

Level Up Your Life

  • In bed by 11pm on the work nights - Ummmm... not even close (heading to bed after this post - so call it about 12:30 am - and I have an 8am I have to get up for - I know - whine, whine, whine, my commute is 10' - next Monday is a real commute - via airplane)
  • Tackle a task I've been avoiding - I totally vegged today other than grocery shopping - BUT - I tend to leave a bag of stuff not put away - all of the groceries are put away and the kitchen (including counters) is clean - so huzzah!

A quick roundup (had to travel this week).....

I've been doing quite well on the yogurt/probiotic front - UNTIL I went out of town.  I've done QUITE well making sure I get in my veggies.  SUCKED at moving and still need to focus on my bed time and tasks.

So the good - for the first time ever - I have at the very least checked in to the challenge for the entire thing.

The bad - I'm still failing to follow through on my small areas of focus.  BUT - for once (as seen in the "good") - I'm not just throwing up my hands.  I'm at least continuing to work on it.

So - I'm going to take these EXACT same items and apply them to the next challenge.  And KEEP DOING IT until I do it right.

So on to the next challenge!
