Jedi vs School and Wedding Planning

Recommended Posts

As Shadri says, it's far better for you to look after your health. I hope the allergy meds start working for you soon.

Your semester sounds crazy. I get mildly stressed out just thinking about that workload! Good Luck :)

And YASSSSS. SUCH CRAZY. It's the mix really. 3 English classes, a painting class, the gym class, Treasurer duties, 16 hrs of work each week, running twice a week, and wedding planning. Someone pls murder me before this semester does!

Is it wrong that this actually makes me miss school :)? You are so close to the end you can do it! I hope your allergy meds kick in soon and you feel better.

Maybe one day I'll miss school xD

My allergy meds are a miracle! They've helped so much :) I'm currently exhausted, but I also have a ton to do this weekend. I wish my Fiance wasn't on midnights so I could talk to him during the day but meh. I'll deal, as per usual. Today is exhaustion day.

So I might end up having to go grocery shopping Saturday?? Not looking forward to that since there's a football game -_- Oh well though.

I'm finally starting to get used to this pace again :) I'm not as tired as I have been, and I feel better overall. It's quite nice.

I'm looking at the eating I'm doing and I have a couple of things that I can do to make things a little better food wise.

- Only one cup of my V8 juice each day (the fruit and veggie kind)

- Fruit and veggies at each meal (at least one- dinner is the problem meal here)

- When I eat hummus, take out a specific number of pita chips first and put the rest away to limit what I can eat

- Only 1 granola bar a day (already mostly doing this one but still a good option)

So I'm super excited :) Not only is whatever I'm doing food wise actually somewhat working (it seems like it's not but in reality I'm looking at weight day 2 of cycle and I'm the same that I was last week which means I'm actually less without the bloating and upset tummy).

Also.News. Drumroll please.

I GOT A JOB.

Like a REAL ADULT JOB. One that starts in January after my GRADUATION HOLY COW WHAT.

And I will have a REAL ADULT SALARY. And REAL ADULT BENEFITS.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH <3

So my fiance and I are SUPER excited about this whole thing :) We're going to be in a really good financial spot when we get married, which is a bloody Christmas miracle if you ask me. WHOOOOOOO!

Very cool! I am now a little in awe of you. My bf is a programmer/consultant/tech guy and I have NO idea how it all works. I look over at his laptop (one of two he usually has open in front of him) and all I see are codes and punctuation all over the place. It looks impressive though :D

Yes there are! It's kind of the fun of it though :) when I was in school I used to collect them. I'm a firm believer in knowing what you are trying to do rather than just how. Once you understand the concepts then applying them to a new programming language, even more esoteric languages like lisp, is pretty simple. You can see how different problems are better solved by different languages and methods but it gets hard to keep track of it. I mainly stick to about 3 these days.

I get way too excited about this stuff :D

Oh yeah, I definitely get that. Most of what I know are higher level languages, but the basic how to solve a problem never truly changes. I occasionally mix them up still but I'm getting better at remembering that Python needs True/False capitalized and that JavaScript and PHP use dollar signs before the variables and that SCSS has lots of useful code extras that make CSS a ton easier.

So things are getting.. easier and harder. I'm still struggling with food, but it's getting a lot better considering that I'm dealing with shark week cravings every week and a half/two weeks. I'm going to be getting off the medication causing that fairly soon though, I can't handle that mess for much longer. Aside from during all of that, my food cravings are very few. I also need to cook more, but last week was the meatloaf disaster and this week I simply don't have time.

My exercise regimen is working out fairly well, I get my two days of class in, I run twice a week (normally anyway). Once I get the food thing back under a little bit better control, I'll be able to start evening things out. I'll have a better idea of how I've been doing once I run my measurements on Friday, and next challenge will probably be weekly measurements. Also, I've had people comment and compliment my increasing flexibility, so I'm pretty excited about that!

I also managed to bring my weak ankle some new problems, I didn't have a brace small enough to wear with shoes when I actually needed to brace it, so it got weird and then I overworked it so now I'm bracing it fairly regularly and waiting for it to calm down.

Yeah, that's me with my week 4 update.

Me too, I'm babying it a lot right now. And thanks, I definitely need it. I'm not looking forward to trying to figure the rest of this all out.

I'm so excited :) It was actually my fiance who complimented me, but my gymnast sister has seen and mentioned improvement when I've seen her as well. If I didn't have that class and the mornings that I specifically carve into time for working out I'd never get the time so I'm glad I've made it work!

I'm sorry your ankle is giving you trouble :( weak ankles are the worst, ugh. I'm glad the rest of your challenge has been going well! I hope going off that medication helps.

Do you have any recommendations/resources for learning Python? I've been told it'd be the most helpful programming language to know as a physicist.

It's done it before, hopefully it will heal up quickly! And me too, the lack of meds should even me out: I never had this trouble until trying this medication. Ugh.

And try CodeAcademy! It's pretty easy to follow for the languages, all of the important stuff is free. (they just started using a freemium model). The other option would be to get a book. I was using it at my old job, and it's the absolute easiest beginner language for powerful programming out there that I know of. I also have a book called Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner, but I had an easier time working with CodeAcademy because it had Q&A forums that can help you if you get stuck. It also teaches the basics of programming in general if it's your first language. I've done so many languages on there at this point that the basics are kinda reflexive for me now! Either way, CodeAcademy will give you enough of a base to begin working with Python, and there are always code challenges online that you can use to keep your skills sharp. Also: ProTip: you do NOT have to memorize code. If you need a piece of code, you can google it and there it is. It's not like with people, you don't have to be able to speak smoothly to a computer like you do to a person.

Well, then it sounds like getting off that medication as soon as possible would be a good idea. I hope you even out soon.

Oh nice! I'll take a look at that, thank you so much!! I took an intro java course a year or two ago, so I've at least had exposure to the concepts/how to think with computer logic/&c, so that should help. Unfortunately it was only after I took that class that I learned... it wouldn't be terribly useful within the realm of physics. xD

Java isn't useful for much of anything anymore tbh, so of course that's what they taught in CS when I took it -_- but yeah, python is super interesting and those concepts are invaluable.

Java isn't useful for much of anything anymore tbh, so of course that's what they taught in CS when I took it -_- but yeah, python is super interesting and those concepts are invaluable.

Yeah... Even if I could remember any actual java code, the most we ever did was make programs to average numbers or tell you how many cats Betsy owns, lol. Didn't seem useful at all.

I've seen how powerful Python is, though - several research groups over the summer used it to do crazy simulations and take data and stuff - and I'm excited to be able to use it for stuff like that!!

Do you have any experience with Mathematica? That's about the closest to "useful programming" I've ever gotten.

I don't remember it either and I studied it for 2 years straight in a classroom setting, don't feel bad xD

I learned it for my old job, they wrote a web app for making scientific research more open and accessible to encourage scientists to repeat experiments (like, trying someone else's experiment to see if it actually works). I didn't use it doing more web development specific stuff, but it was extremely powerful.

And I don't really. Those tend to be pretty research specific, and I'm not good at research haha
