Seeing you around the boards again was a wonderful surprise, but it took me some time to track down your challenge thread. Hi five from another fellow Ranger-Monk (recently switched from crossfit to muay thai)

Hello!  I actually have been quietly stalking your thread for a while, so I knew about the Muay Thai.  Brutal stuff, that.

Updates!

Dojang was closed on Monday due to the holiday, so I went Tuesday instead.  I didn't feel like the class was a particularly tough one, but I was kind of achy that night and couldn't sleep.  Also, another arm wrestling draw with an 8 year old girl this time.  Damned noodle arms.  I seriously need to find a good strength training routine.  Or at least DO one of the 12 or so I have tried.

I decided to add Dan-Gun practice to my homeschooling schedule, since my son needs to learn it, too.  This should make practice time much more regular and systematic.

Reflection time is going well and serving its purpose.  I've done a few repeat sessions on People Pleasing, and today I did the Appearance questions.

I have been keeping up with the #22Kill challenge, but I quickly discovered that I need more recovery than I get doing them every day at my challenge level.  So, I am now alternating lower-incline days with easier higher-incline days.

Catching up on everyone's threads is giving me a major case of RangerBrainTM  a.k.a. DO ALL THE THINGS.

So far, I want to:

  • Join #22Kill
  • Make a Rebel Legion worthy Star Wars costume
  • Resume MovNat training
  • Write a novel
  • Develop an at-home martial arts training regimen to facilitate:
  • Get a black belt in TKD
  • Relearn to run with Pose Method
  • Walk to Mordor
  • Run a Spartan Race
  • Ditch the noodle arms
  • Lose 40 lbs
  • Learn about 7 languages

I think I would seriously like to sit down and write out a 2-year plan:  Everything I would like to accomplish before I turn 40.  Yep.  I am two years (and two months) from the big 4-0.  And then break down those goals into realistic bite-size goals and go for it, so I don't get distracted by all the shinies.

Oh, yes, I am a Ranger-Monk.  That is now a thing.  It fits in with the MovNat philosophy I have adopted (a.k.a. DO ALL THE THINGS!!!).

You'll probably see me back in the Ranger Guild after the New Year, when my training focus shifts back to OCR fitness in prep for the Grand Prix Trifecta.  For now, though, the emphasis is taekwondo belt test in December.

I can (and do) train incline pushups at home.  I personally feel they are a better progression than knee pushups, anyway.  However when I am in class, we have to drop and do pushups, so I have to do whatever I can on the floor.  The instructors are sympathetic and don't give me a hard time about not having full range of motion yet.  It's just me who gets frustrated.

Yes, we shall do pushups and banish noodle arms forever!

Yes. Movnat has it all. Everything I want to do in one place. The ultimate multiclass system. Except they don't have "Boxes" on every street corner like Crossfit. We shouldn't need movenat to run around and climb on trees or swim or roughhouse. But, as I'm finding out, years of human hamster wheel workouts have locked everything up and I do need help to get my movement mechanics back on track.

Is it weird I have daydreams of opening a MOVNAT Gym just so I have a place to work out?  It's becoming an obsession. I can't drop the idea. I live in a very upscale fitness conscious neighborhood where most people have expendable income. Gyms everywhere. Wooded running trails. I seriously think a MovNat gym would stay profitable, especially running a MacDojo model picking up kids after school and a crossfit model targeting parents.  I would actually have to maintain eating discipline to make it work, no one wants to get fitness advice from lard-a$$. Oh, and at least another two years working on my mobility. No one wants to hear mobility advice from a guy who scores 12 on his functional movement screen.

Sorry in advance if this is a thread hijack. Good to see you back.

No worries, I love a good hijacking.

You're right about lacking the mobility to adequately do "natural" movement.  I am finding that I need a lot of prehab/rehab, which is part of why I want to organize a long-term plan, and not tackle everything haphazardly and get injured (again).

And no, it is not weird.  I have pretty much the same idea, except more like a some wooded acreage with both natural and manmade obstacles to overcome.

I miss the woods, too.  I generally stay out of them in the summer because of all the bugs and snakes and such, but I run or hike trail almost exclusively in the late fall/winter/early spring.  The pavement steals your soul.  It's only a slight improvement over the dreadmill.

I went to the dojang tonight.  I guess the instructor decided that my bruised ego (and noodle arms) have had enough, since I was assigned no epic one-on-one battles with prepubescents.  Instead, I was matched up against black belts for some light sparring.  Oddly, I prefer this.  At least when I get my butt kicked, it's expected.  Actually, no one kicked my butt.  Since our levels were so divergent, they were mostly instructional matches.  They'd give me an opening and tell me how to attack it or gave hints on how to use my diminutive height to my advantage (at least in a formal match where technique matters-the same strategy would get me slaughtered in a street fight I think).

Like this? I'm really sad this place is just a little too far for me to go to on a regular basis. Making it my goal to get there a few times before OCR season starts again next year though.

Ye gods, yes!  It make me crazy that there are tons of such courses around here, but the government won't let me play on them.:distress:

All caught up?  Awesome!

After all the thread talk about getting outdoors, I decided to take my kids to the park for school today.  It's about a 3/4 mile walk one-way, so not bad on the fitness front, either.  We fed Cheerios to the geese at the pond and I did tabletop pushups under the pavilion while the kids did there assignments.  Then, they got to play on the playground and in the woods before we walked home.  We noted a fair amount of wildlife: the geese, fish, butterflies, bees, dragonflies, and a friggin' snake.

Again.  With my kids.  This one was tiny, and most likely a harmless smooth green snake.  But still, twice in one week?  C'mon, man!

But green snakes are so cute.  I miss having a pet snake, and a bearded dragon.  I really miss the bearded dragon, you've got to love a lizard that can sit and eat nachos with you while you're playing video games.

It was kinda cute, after I got over the startle factor. We stopped and watched it for a while.  But after twice in one week, I jump at every twig or pine needle I see, expecting it to slither.  Plus, I've been really lucky that both were harmless.  Some of the local snakes are very poisonous.

Same here, but I learned a long time ago how to recognize venomous types for my regions.

Florida was a bit rough on the snake front,  that's the only place I've actually had a venomous snake attack me. It was a cottonmouth that was trying to make a home under my house, I couldn't allow that to happen.

We had a pygmy rattlesnake in our garage in Florida.  I hate snakes.
