Saturday was kind of nuts. I got in a 3 mile walk and my pushups. Then after all my complaining about snakes, my son was bitten by a spider or some other insect, had an allergic reaction, and had to be taken to the hospital. Seriously, Nature, WTF? I'm a little afraid to go outside anymore. (The kid's fine, btw, just on a daily regimen of antibiotics and allergy meds for the next week or so.) Sunday was more or less a rest day, although I did do a set of pushups. Did anyone catch that? I did ONE set of 22 incline pushups (on the easier level, not the challenge level). I think I am getting stronger. Maybe I should arm wrestle my 5-year-old and see if I can score a victory. Meditation kind of fell apart last week, and my food really fell apart. I feel like I am back focused, now. Got to finish the challenge strong. Dan Gun practice is going well. Or at least I'd like to think so. I'd like to get a black belt to look at it tonight at class and see what needs tweaking. The 270 degree spin between movements 8 and 9 still feels awkward, so maybe ask for some help with that. I really want to make that 2-year plan before we start the next challenge cycle, but I am kind of in underpants-collecting mode right now.... 2 Quote Life before Death Strength before Weakness Journey before Destination Link to comment
RisenPhoenix
Okay, semi-caught up. I vanished for a bit. Sorry! 1) I've been unofficially a Monk-Ranger for some time now. Totally a thing. 2) I really like MovNat, too. I am stoked for Camp NF where there are a lot of MoveNat-based classes. Including a course named "Primal Combatives." So, uh, yea. Super excited. 3) 6 minutes ago, Phoenix Burning said: I really want to make that 2-year plan before we start the next challenge cycle, but I am kind of in underpants-collecting mode right now.... So I understand the underpants collecting mode woes, but keep in mind that anything you throw down on that two year plan is probably veeeery likely to change. Either you'll find something makes you less excited than you thought it would, or you'll find a cool new thing to you want to fit in, or in the terrible case scenario you get injured somehow and have to do some recovery time. This isn't a "don't do it" post, as much as maybe the underpants collecting might lessen if you realize that maybe everything won't come to pass, and therefore it might be easier to frame as a "I want to do XYZ within two years, and here's the skeleton of that plan, but if it doesn't happen exactly it's not terrible." Granted, I know I try to plan a lot of contingency plans, so maybe that won't work for you. But maybe it's an alternate mental phrasing that could help. 2 Quote RisenPhoenix, the Entish Aikidoka Challenge: RisenPhoenix Turns to Ash "The essence of koryu [...is] you offer your loyalty to something that you choose to regard as greater than yourself so that you will, someday, be able to offer service to something that truly is transcendent." ~ Ellis Amdur, Old School Link to comment

I think that half my problem is that my plans are all too likely to change, so I am not making progress in any of them, if that makes sense. I keep leaping from one project to another to another and back to the first and wonder why I am not making progress. Plus, I get waaay too excited about the shiny new thing and go all out trying to achieve it and have a mental and/or physical blow out. I guess my purpose in The Plan is to establish benchmarks to hit so that I a.) stay motivated about what is ultimately a long, slow process and b.) don't get ahead of myself and get injured trying to do too much too soon. But you're right. Maybe by going ahead and making a skeleton plan, I can eliminate or at least focus some of the underpants collecting by prioritizing what things to do first, what things can wait, and what just doesn't realistically fit in at all. 1 Quote Life before Death Strength before Weakness Journey before Destination Link to comment
RisenPhoenix
Preaching to the choir. I want to lift, aikido, lose weight, and run PRs at November Project, plus prepare for GORUCK events. I'm a mess with my goals, so I just do ALL THE THINGS and end up ALL THE PUDDLE. Wish I had better suggestions. Skeleton plans seem to work the best for me because it gives me enough wiggle room to move forward without feeling locked in, or freaking out if something major changes. But I know I'm weird. 3 Quote RisenPhoenix, the Entish Aikidoka Challenge: RisenPhoenix Turns to Ash "The essence of koryu [...is] you offer your loyalty to something that you choose to regard as greater than yourself so that you will, someday, be able to offer service to something that truly is transcendent." ~ Ellis Amdur, Old School Link to comment

I hear you on the dojo problems (or whatever they call it in Kung Fu). It took several tries to find somewbere I could be happy, and it still isn't perfect. I can make it work, though. I found you while you were posting this, but I am only on page 2 of 8 or whatever. I am never jumping in mid-challenge again. I was a week behind to start with (two, if you count zero week), and it has taken forever to find everyone and get caught up. Here I am, still touching base with people 5 days before the challenge ends. Next time will be easier. 2 Quote Life before Death Strength before Weakness Journey before Destination Link to comment
