Schaengel runs a marathon

So I finished the first part of my challenge and more importantly my first marathon :)

Started the day of the marathon at 4:45am (urghs) then we drove with four people (2 for the halfmarathon, me and one person from our running group that had to skip the marathon due to injurie) to cologne. When we arrived we escorted our halfmarathon runners to there start (they started at 8:30) and after that it was time for the last bananas and then getting into the starting wave I registered for.

As a little personal motivation I had put a really basic NF-Logo on my arm too remind me that quitting wasn't an option ;)

And at 10:00am the marathon started and my block crossed the starting line at 10:08.

I followed the two pacemaker guys that had the 5:00:00 finishtime and the first 10km where awesome. We had a group of 10-15people all aiming for 5:00:00 and the tempo was nice and steady. At km10 I started to feel hungry so at 15km I used my first energy gel and at 19km the second after that I didn't feel great but okay again. I managed to keep up with the pacemakers (they were awesome because they really worked on getting us through the marathon even spliting up and helping people run back to the main group from time to time) until km25 when I fell back for the first time but managed to get back to them quite fast.

Then on KM31

200.gif(There is an expression in German "the man with the hammer" describing the sudden point of exhaustion that normally comes arround KM30 in a race)

So I had to fall back again. Thank god (or whoever) that I got an gel-chip at the running expo for emergency. After taking that and with a little help from one of the pacers I managed to stay with them till KM33 where I had to let them go for good (at that point there were 3 people left from the original 15 in the group).

KM33 to KM38 where no fun at all and on parts I was cursing quite loud...

At KM38 when it got back to the inner city motivation kicked in again and I managed to even make good a little of the lost time. The last 3KM where awesome. The crowd  in the inner city was really supportive and pushed every person running :)

So I finished with an overall time of 5:07:04, and even though I would have loved to stay under 5 thats still hughe for me (considering that my longest run before was 26Km)

So now I will regenerate and then go and travell a bit and after that I will find new goals (at the moment I'm interested in the marathons in Frankfurt or Berlin next year or the ocr in Hamburg) :)

That's awesome. Congrats. Great idea on having the NF reminder on you. :)

Yeah it really helped on the mentally hard parts (even though it didn't stop the cursing ;) )

So a quick update:

Regeneration is going well and I think tomorrow I will do my first after marathon-yoga :)

Also tomorrow evening I will leave for the NF-European Meeting (unofficial) so I'm working on my travel preparations as well as all the things that I feel I should do before I leave. So I get a  lot of things done in a day :D

Started tracking with mfp again today, I need to prepare my foods/buy good food to stay in my calorie goal but that's not happening till I'm back and I'm not even mad about it ;)

Also I will probably change Quest 2 from Spanish learning to Management learning because Spanish is a big unhandy book while Management is prepared on nice learning cards that don't take up much space in my bag...and space is kinda rare on the next travel ;)

Still alive, but mainly occupied walking around all the places. The meeting was awesome and I enjoyed everything ( food, lifting and a lot of funny awesome nerds). Tomorrow I will go too the isles of skye for more walking :). Will write more when I'm back in Germany. If you want to see/read stuff before following my instagram or looking into the Edinburgh meet up thread here is highly recommended ;)

So I'm back from traveling and started to sort out, my schedules for the next months. Think I will need the next sunday to catch up here and probably the last week to setup everything for some good next months.

Also tomorrow I will be (kinda) teaching students at my university how to do presentations right (and I get paid to do that *_*) so that's what I was preparing the last days :)

SO prepare for a lot to read on sunday...

So since this Challenge is already finished I'll write up what if been up to since the marathon.

After the marathon I had some days of relaxing (meaning couch, some walks, some stretching and Ooh the pain) end then I started my Scotland vacation.

I arrived in Edinburgh at night and went to my hostel (Castle Rock right next to Edinburgh Castle Hill) and even though I stayed in a 10person bedroom it was nice and quite so I fell asleep pretty soon.

I started the day the way I always start my vacations. Breakfast and then walking around for an hour to get to know the area. While I did that I recognized that on the street I was walking on there was the "Elephant House" a coffee-shop that is famous for J.K.Rowling writing some of the Harry Potter books there. It was still early in the day and so I took the chance to drink a coffee there before the cafe got crowded with tourists. After that some more walking and then I joined a nice free walking tour. 2hours of stories about history of Scotland and Edinburgh, Ghost Stories, Harry Potter trivia (some of the places that were inspiration to Hogwarts, Diagonal Alley and a graveyard where you can find some character names cause J.K. got inspired there too )

After that I went to the Caffeine Drip to meet with the other NF nerds. There we had lunch and then went for a little walking (and talking) with some more coffee. After that I went back to the hostel for a little break. Did some more walking (and a little character name search on the before mentioned graveyard because I wanted to find the grave of “You-Know-Who”) and exploring, watched a street magician and then went to Wings where the NF-Edinburgh-Meeting kind of officially started. So the evening was spent talking, playing video games, eating wings and a block of deep fried cheese.

The next day started with walking around the city again. I may got lost a little there but at the end I found some nice places that weren’t that touristy. Then we had brunch at a shop called Badgers and Co that was adorable (someone got a little carried away with the number of sausages on one of the plates leading to a lot of fun over the next days). After that another walking tour (I recognized I really enjoy walking around when I’m travelling…I may be an scout in denial and not an assassin O_O)  After that we went to the lifting session and it was fun…overall…except that I couldn’t get my head around the deadlifts and was frustrated at the end because I knew what I did wrong but couldn’t find out why. After that we went to get some food at an AWESOME little Indian restaurant to end the day.

The last day of the NF meetup we walked to the top of “Arthur’s Seat” (as was challenged by Steve) then had breakfast-burritos, deep-fried mars bars (okay some of us…;) )and then we split up.

Overall it was awesome and I’m really looking forward to meeting again as soon as I get the chance.

The evening I went on a ghost-tour with @Chen Wangting had a nice chat with some German girls from the hostel and then packed my stuff and went to bed.

Monday morning was the start of the 3days Isle of Skye backpacking tour. So a lot of the day was spent sitting in a bus with a driver/tour guide (Michael) that looked like he could be part of the Braveheart movie that had a story for every stop and nearly every village we passed. The travelling group was pretty nice and after a stop at loch ness (with swimming in it of course XD) we arrived on the Isle in the evening had dinner in the pub and then went to bed.

(Little rant: the hostel we had on the Isle of Skye sucked…my bed was bad and to small and the people in my room (not part of our travelling-group) where loud and overall really annoying so a had two bad nights there and was sleepy and annoyed at the last day)

The next days were spent exploring the isle so here are some pictures of that:

BEAUTIFUL!

(If you know Game of Thrones or Monthy Python you maybee can recognize this castle ;) )

When we arrived back in Edinburgh we all meet up after bringing the stuff to the hostels and went to the Indian restaurant I already mentioned. Then we went to a little pub with some live music and then I ended my day because I needed the sleeping time…

The last day I did some shopping, went to Edinburgh Castle and then to the airport and back home where my family collected me.

The next days I went to Berlin staying with a friend to celebrate her birthday. Also we went to Berlin dungeon, the Welcome to Nightvale Ghost Story tour, Circus Flic Flac (Circus without animals but with motorbike stunts and a prison theme (and rock music)and I visited one of the companies I used to work for.

The rest of the challenge I spend to get my stuff at home back in order. I forget learning Spanish and/or Management but that will be part of the next challenge so that is okay.

I think I’m in a good place to start some things anew in the next Challenge now…let’s do this (assassin style again ;) )

Sounds like a really fun vacation!

Yeah, it was pretty nice. I'm having a hard time now getting some kind of routine back. Especially since I just have half a day of fixed university lectures.. :/
