Challenge #6- September 12 - October 22

art ghost destiny warning fanart

I respawned at the very end of the last challenge and figured it was better late than never to respawn and get back towards my fitness and life goals, so this is a continuation of that. Since playing too much Destiny was one of the reasons that I got into this mess in the first place I decided to make this challenge themed based on the new DLC that is coming out for Destiny: Rise of Iron.

 destinyriseofiron-625x352.jpg

Goal One: Train for the Combat to come = Go to the gym/workout 3x per week  ____/18

One of the reason that my fitness started to decline was that I just stopped going to the gym, and working out really at all. Video games and just watching Netflix became what I did when I got home instead of working on my body. Its time to fix that and take control of my life again. My goal is to get into the gym and see the other guardians working out and help myself become stronger and more disciplined.  Unfortunately, I don't have a fire team to help me on this mission so it looks like I'm going solo.

Goal Two: Fit into my Battle Armor again = Loose 6lbs and 2%BF

Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

There are going to be lots of new armor sets coming out and I want to be able to fit into them! Not shockingly when you're not exercising or eating right you tend to gain weight :( I'm currently the heaviest I've ever been lbs wise and my BF is a very sad 22%. I've got a long way to go to get it back down to where I was and where I want to be. The most depressing part is the fact that it is hard or impossible to fit into some of my pants anymore, and while super depressing is also super motivating because I don't want to buy new pants! hahaha

Goal Three: Learn about my Weapons: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks _____/ 42

In the war of diet and exercise if exercise is the combat, then diet is our weapons. And I need to visit the gunsmith and prepare for battle. I need to get my diet back in order to get to where I want to be. So the goal is to just get into the habit of logging my food, good or bad, in MFP. Hopefully that will help and seeing the calories will help me make better choices.

Goal Four: Study the Ancient Archives: Read Spartan Fit ___/1

Reading about history has always helped prepare for the future and I know that reading about diet and exercise and the Spartan mindset is sure to help, so instead of watching TV at night I'm going to try and read this book.

Challenge Review- 9/12- 10/23/2016

Ryuu returned with a vengeance and smashed his goals!

destiny the game

It is great to be back into the forums and just from this challenge alone I remember why I love it so much and had such success the last time I was very active on here. The awesome friends and the accountability of typing out and reviewing my goals each week is really a powerful tool.

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 18 /18

Overall Grade: 18/18 = 100% A+

While challenging I was able to acomplish this goal in one way or another though will power and habit building making me happy that I did every all of the workouts that I wanted to do for this 6 week goal.
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Overall Grade 1: (Weight Loss) 6.6/6 = 110% A+

Overall Grade 2: (Body Fat Loss) 3.2/ 2 or 2.5/2 = 125% - 160% A+ (ish)

Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs End: 165.7lbs
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20% End: 18.9%

Starting and Ending Measurements

Start: Abs/Waist: 33.25                       End:  32             Progress: -1.25

Start: Arms (unflex/flex): 12.5/13.5    End: 12.5/13.5   Progress: 0/0

Start: Calf:14                                        End: 14              Progress: 0

Start: Chest: 40                                    End: 40.5           Progress: +0.5

Start: Hip: 34                                        End: 33               Progress: -1

Start: Shoulders: 46.5                         End: 46.5             Progress: 0

Start: Thigh (R/L): 22/22                      End: 21.5/ 21.5   Progress: -0.5

Start: Butt: 40                                       End: 39.25          Progress: -0.75

Start: Neck: 14                                     End: 14                Progress: 0

Even though my BF% was a little hard to measure I honestly think I killed this goal. Like I mentioned in my week 4 review basically no matter what source I use my body fat significantly decreased and overall I've lost almost 6lbs while undoubtedly putting on some muscle as well. I'm very happy with my progress to far.

Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 38/ 42
Overall Grade: 38/43 = 90% A-

I've learned a lot about myself and about my ability to stick with my nutritional goals while traveling, by trying to maintain this goal. Such that it is much harder to record when you don't have the information and that when out and about its best to stick with the grilled-chicken or seafood options at the restaurants that you don't know and don't have a "healthy options" menu.

Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 239/239 + The Paradox of Choice- 155/263

Overall Grade: 394/239  = 165% A++

I considered giving myself a much lower grade on this goal but then I realized that I was already going above and beyond my initial goal by trying to read an extra book. Even though I didn't finish my stretch goal I still feel very good about all that I read during this challenge. Hopefully I can continue to improve my reading and continue to check books off of my "to read list"

Next time I think I'm going to focus on improving my flexibility, my handstands, and the amount of sleep that I'm getting each night. I'll post the link to my next challenge here if you'd like to follow along with me again :)

Week Negative One Review

Week -1 Review 9/12-18/16

It feels like I've found my Fireteam again

Image result for guardian destiny

Happy to be back is the overall theme of this week. I'm excited to be back on the forums and surrounded by so many people who are wanting to level up their lives just like me. I think I made decent headway towards my goals this week but there is still a lot of work to be done before this challenge is out. I'm also excited to be a member of the Doodlies and to be apart of the PVP and accountabilibuddies teams :)

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 3 /18
This was tough but I managed to make it through and get into the gym all three days this week and even did an extra session of yoga on Thursday before my meeting. Made good progress towards this goal this week :)
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Weight as of 9/15 = 169.6 lbs

Progress towards goal: -2.7lbs
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% as of 9/15 = 23%

Profess towards goal: +0.9%
I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this goal this week. I mean I lost almost 3 lbs but my % BF went up by .9% so I'm a little bit confused as to what happened and why :/ Maybe my weight in this Thursday will shed some light on what happened.
Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 7/ 42
So far so good with this one. Had a few bumps in the road in terms of Nutrition (its hard to stay in your calorie range when your GF makes delicious ribs!) but overall I think I did pretty well so far in terms of at least tracking and recording everything I ate, even if it put me over my cal goal for the day.  Plus according to MFP I'm only over my overall goal for the week by 53 calories and I'll call that close enough :)
Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 79/239

A pretty good read so far. Very inspiring in terms of the motivation to get of your butt and go do something. Also the way he raises his kids is both awesome and terrifying, no spoilers but lets just say I'm sure I'd have a love/hate relationship with everything that he makes them do.

Week 0 Review 9/19-25/16

Sick but not beaten, Ryuu battles onward towards his goals

Image result for destiny rise of iron

I think I've done a mighty fine job this week considering I've been sick and fighting off the plague. Today, I managed to do 1 hour of yoga, 30 min of archery, and even managed to squeeze in a light 30min walk too! I'd consider that a very active rest day :)

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 6 /18
I'm giving myself a little leway on this one since I was with plague for the majority of the week. But I made it to the gym on Monday and Friday and did yoga on Wedneday and Sunday. And thats not counting my epic bike ride from yesterday, so I'm giving myself full credit for the week.
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Weight as of 9/23 = 166.8 lbs

Progress towards goal: -5.5lbs
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% as of 9/23 = 23.8%

Progress towards goal: +1.7%
Sooo I'm still really confused on what my weight and BF%s are doing, not sure why they both are not going down, but I'm going to try a few of the measurement calculations @Anim07734 showed me sometime this week. As well as take some new measurements so hopefully I'll have a better idea of where I am at towards my goals this week. But at least in terms of lbs I'm almost past my goal and the challenge has barley started so yay! for that.
Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 14/ 42
Still going strong for this goal, and from not eating very much when I was super sick on Tuesday and my super bike ride yesterday I'm actually 2,753 cal under my weekly goal! Hopefully I'll be able to keep up this momentum for the whole challenge! :)
Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 176/239

This is turning into a very easy read, and I think I might give the 30 day transformation challenge in the book a try for the next challenge.

Week 1 Review 9/26- 10/1/16

Took a few hits, but continued the battle

destiny gaming video game

A challenging week overall mainly due to the sheer amount of work that I've been doing at school. Took a few missteps during the week but in the end I'm positive that I've moved towards my goals this weeks. I've also spend a lot of time this week thinking about the future and what exactly I want to do, and how I want to progress with my training. I think I might spend the entire next challenge focusing on handstands and flexibility.

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 9 /18
Managed to make it to all of my scheduled workouts this week on Mon, Wed, and Fri, even if it took quite a bit of myown willpower and some habit tricks to get me into the gym, I'm very happy I stuck with my goals and made it every day. I also managed to complete a relatively easy yoga session with my students on Thursday and my own hand balancing routine on Saturday for a pretty active week overall.
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Average Weight this week = 167.6 lbs

Progress towards goal: -4.7lbs/ 6lbs
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% Average this week = 20.8%

Progress towards goal: -1.3 % / 2%

Current Measurements:

Abs/Waist:33 (-.25) [Start = 33.25]

Arms (unflex/flex): 12/13.5 (-.5/ 0 ) [Start = 12.5/13.5]

Calf:14 (0) [Start = 14]

Chest: 40 (0) [Start = 40]

Hip: 33.5 (-0.5) [Start = 34]

Shoulders: 46.5 (0) [Start =46.5]

Thigh (R/L): 21.5 /21.5  (-0.5/ -0.5) [Start = 22/22]

Butt: 40 (0) [Start = 40]

Neck: 14 (0) [Start = 14]

My body fat % on my scale finally seemed to plummet (for no apparent reason) but I remember from last time I was reducing my BF% my body seems to woosh away entire % points over night instead of dropping them gradually as you'd normally expect. Either way I'm pretty happy about my weight loss goals for this week. I also noticed a small decrease in my hip and ab measurements which is also pretty exciting. I can't wait till I can fit into my old pants again >__< hahaha

Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 21/ 42
Recording as best I can, I think I've missed  a few things here and there but for the most part I am recording everything that I am eating. Nutrition has been a real struggle this week as my sweet tooth has been almost insatiable, but for the most part I think I have done a great job of keeping the sugar demons at bay.
Goal FourRead Spartan Fit- 239/239 Read The Paradox of Choice- 111/263

Didn't have a lot of time to read so far this week but I might carve out an hour or so on Sunday and try and finish this book off. I did end up finishing this book this week and have decided to take on a stretch goal and finish another book on my "to read" list the Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz. I was already about 100pgs in before I put it down so I might end up finishing this book quickly as well.

Week Two Review

Spoiler

Days 3-7 & Week 2 Review- 10/2-19/16

Notices how hard it is to keep up a routine away from home

destiny the game

The first part of this week went very well from Sunday- Thursday (morning) I managed to do some yoga almost every day (somedays two) and got into the gym to do my strength training two times. Tracking my food intake was easy and I was doing well staying in side my calorie goals. Then came Thursday night, I had 2 presentations that I was giving at the professional development conference that I was going to and had not had any time at all to complete them. So I ended up pulling an all nighter on Thursday so that I could finish them. Then once I got to the conference I hadn't gotten a hotel room so I was relying on the good will of others as to were I was going to sleep that night which was not only stressful but ended up causing even more problems for my sleep schedule. Finally there was the impossibility of finding cheap healthy options while trying to eat out. Why is anything that is "healthy" always more expensive...uhhh it was really frustrating.

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 12 /18
I only managed to get into the gym 2 times this week because of all the crazyness with the conference, but I did manage to find time for an in person yoga class that I found at a yoga studio near the conference. Plus all of the other yoga that I did this week should count for something so I'm counting all of the yoga I did as my other workout for the week.
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Average Weight this week = 165.6 lbs

Progress towards goal: -6.7lbs/ 6lbs!!
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% Average this week = 21.3%

Progress towards goal: -.8 % / 2%

Dropped past my lbs goal of 6lbs this week which is pretty exciting but my BF% seemed to go up again with is annoying :/ I have a feeling that my bodyweight is also going to go back up this week because of poor choices I made during the conference. Not that I didn't try to be healthy but at a lot of the eateries that we decided to go to all their "healthy" were so bland and over priced that I decided to try the semi-healthy option just to try more of the local faire.

Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 26/ 42
Recording when you're not cooking and at restaurants that are not in the MFP food data base (most local non-chain restaurants) is a real pain in the butt. I couldn't even find similar foods to what I had for most of the weekend and therefore wasn't able to track as well as I wanted too so I am only giving myself credit for 5/7 days of tracking for this week.
Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 239/239 The Paradox of Choice- 152/263

Got a decent chunk of my 2nd book read this week. Reading a few pages here and there really adds up in the long run. I should be able to finish my second book by challenge's end no problem!

Week Three Review

Spoiler

Week 3 Review- 10/10-16/2016

Enjoys his week off, his birthday, and a trip to the Renaissance Faire

Image result for barely balanced

One of my favorite things to see each year at the Renaissance Festival is Barely Balanced an acrobatic comedy show. I think that would be the coolest job ever! Maybe one day after I get my handstands down I'll be able to go on the road as a traveling acrobatics performer :D Well I can dream can't I? :P Just makes me 100% sure that my next challenge is going to be more about skills and flexibility than this challenge.

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 15 /18
Got into the gym M/W/F this week completing all of my planned workout sessions but I also did a healthy dose of yoga and cardio by way of bike riding for an overall very active week.
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Average Weight this week = 164.8 lbs

Progress towards goal: -7.5/ 6lbs!!
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% Average this week = 21.2%

Progress towards goal: -.9 % / 2%

Weight continuing to drop. Finally back to my "normal" about 165 but I know I've still got about 10lbs to go before I'm really where I'd like to be. Plus probably another 5 or so after that for my ultimate goal. Its great to have some progress and momentum, its going to be a long journey but I can get there.

Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 32/ 42
Recording went ok this week, up until we left for the Faire on Friday it was easy, but once again as soon as you leave your own kitchen eating healthy tends to get much harder. I'm also pretty sure I'm trying to cut a little bit too hard (trying to loose 2lbs a week) and I keep eating over my goal but that's one of the reasons I set it so low in the first place so I'm not sure if I want to raise my goal or not :/ I think I might up the cal goal so my goal is only 1.5lbs lost a week for the next challenge and see if that help with some of my "over" eating problems.
Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 239/239 The Paradox of Choice- 152/263

Shockingly didn't read very much this week instead focusing on creating my own story for our Doodles and D&D Campaign. I'm going to try and read a little more this week and still finish this book by the end of the challenge.

Week Four Review

Week 4 Review- 10/17-23/2016

Had a hard week, but my habits helped me push though.

destiny the game

This was probably one of the "hardest" weeks of the challenge for me in terms of work and motivation but I made me amazed at just how powerful a lot of the habits that I've been forming are. Even when I didn't want to workout or do yoga (like at all) I would internally say something like "no excuses" or "you'll feel better after you're done" even saying things like "just go, all you have to do it step one foot in the gym and it counts" were really helpful in getting me to accomplish my goals.

Goal One: Go to the gym/workout 3x per week- 18 /18
Made it! It was hard but I went every day and completed my strenght workouts :D Woot!
Goal Two: Loose 6lbs and 2%BF
Start: 172.3lbs Goal: 166lbs

Average Weight this week = 165.7 lbs

Progress towards goal: -6.6/ 6lbs!!
Start: 22.1% BF Goal: >20%

FB% Average this week = 18.9%***

Progress towards goal: -3.2 / 2%

So heres where it gets odd... I found out that my fit bit scale has a feature called "lean mode" which it says is for those who workout actively multiple times per week and I figured that I'd give it a try off of lean mode my BF% was 20.7% on the scale and on lean mode it was 18.9% which is still quite a bit higher than the body fat results I get from my body composition tracking google sheet that I've been getting. According to the formula's on there I've lost 2.5%BF since the start of the challenge. Even though the numbers that they are giving me are quite a bit off from my scale too (start: 17.5% end: 15%) I think I'm going to stick with "lean mode" from now on just because it seems to be a closer representation. Even judging from these pictures that seems to be closer to where I think I am BF% wise:

18c37afee8ec8de03051c61c7f8c245a.jpg

Goal Three: Record all food intake in MFP (MyFitnessPal) for 6 weeks- 38/ 42
Eating out, at small restaurants, is still the main problem with recording my food intake just because I have no idea how to record the dishes. Ive still tried but they are purely guesses and I'm sure they are fairly inaccurate
Goal Four: Read Spartan Fit- 239/239 + The Paradox of Choice- 155/263

Haven't really had any time to read lately unfortunately, even when I try to read before be I'm only abel to manage a few pages before I get so tired I just can't keep my eyes open. Eh either way at least I finished the 1st book that I wanted to  accomplish.

Thanks! :D  That sounds like a pretty cool themed challenge too, I'll be on the look out for when you put it up so I can follow you back! I normally play a Hunter, Nightstalker so I was thinking of doing that but since my goals were kind of generic and "just get back into it" this time figured this would be a pretty good re-start.  (that and I didn't have any archery goals for this challenge and If I was going to do a Nighstaker theme you better bet "practice my shadow shot" would be a goal hahaha)

I play on PS4, unfortunately that means we are cross system from another....Can't touch....lol

stitch reaction touch lilo and stitch touching

PS how did you do progress bars in your signature? I can't seem to figure out how to do them after the update, thanks!

So shockingly I've never actually checked out Darebee's website or checked them out very much but it is such a cool website! They have all kinds of great things on there and I'm very interested in trying out the Age of Pandora Fitness Quest  that they have on there too, it looks like it would be really cool. I might just switch up my strength training workout (or add too) for some of the Age of Pandora chapters.

Dare bee workouts are pretty awesome. I did the 30 Days of Gravity in last challenge and my results were awesome. Push-ups 15 -> 35 in just 4 weeks!

Im looking right now for a new workout. Either a dare bee workout or the startingbodyweight workout with flexibility and skill for the off days.

Dare bee workouts are pretty awesome. I did the 30 Days of Gravity in last challenge and my results were awesome. Push-ups 15 -> 35 in just 4 weeks!

Im looking right now for a new workout. Either a dare bee workout or the startingbodyweight workout with flexibility and skill for the off days.

btw i just added my challenge

Agreed! Nice I really like the starting body weight workout they are really good and his progressions are very well paced. I like to do some yoga on my phone on my off days to try and get better about my own flexibility so I completely understand that. Once you really start getting into bodyweight stuff you should check out Overcoming Gravity (Looks like they are coming out with a second edition soon too which is pretty cool!) Especially if you like tricks like handstands and the leavers.

Awesome! I'll go follow it now :)

Week 0: Day 1- Monday September 19th

A sad start to the week, MONDAYS! *shakes fist*

Hum...where to start....Well, yesterday my GF got the unfortunate news that her grandmother had a stroke which caused a heart attack and that she had passed away earlier that day at the hospital  :'( so I spend most of the day comforting her and making sure she was ok. But still had to type up my lessons for school and ended up staying up until 2:30am trying to finish them all, not good when you have to wake up at 6:00am and start getting ready. Then around 2:00am my throat started burning and I'm pretty sure I some how got sick from staying up late :/

So I knew that no sleep + sickness was going to equal a great day at work. I was right, just getting though today required lots of caffeine and drugs >_<  Shockingly I actually still convinced myself to go to the gym (I kept telling myself that my goal was just to physically set foot in the gym and then I could go home if I wanted) and felt a lot better during my workout than the rest of the day.

Since I wasn't feeling well at all today's workout was basically just me playing around in the gym. I did some box jumps, ran a little bit, did some pull ups and handstand pushups, practiced my handstands, and played on the monkey bars. Nothing was really set and I just kind of had fun, in the end it turned into quite and actual workout and according to my Fitbit I burned 691 calories in an hour!

Yeah it was one of those well you can't possibly feel any worse so you might as well try kind of days >_< hahaha Weirdly enough I felt better doing my workout than I had most of the rest of the day, maybe because I was focusing on my workout and not thinking about it?

Week 0: Day 2- Sept 20, 2016

Ryuu takes a Sick Day

I woke up today feeling about as awful as can be imagined, throat on fire, head ace, stopped up nose, ext... and just decided that I needed a sick day. So I called out from work and sent in a coloring sheet for my kids to occupy themselves with (sometimes being an art teacher has its perks). After some rest and a trip to the Dr to get some meds I'm feeling quite a bit better and may even try a short yoga session later today if I think I can handle it. Didn't feel up for it :/ Might do some yoga today instead of going to the gym if I'm still feeling bad by the time I get out of work.

Also and I swear I didn't plan it, but  the new DLC for Destiny: Rise of Iron came out today and it was kind of cool to be able to play around on it for a little bit before deciding that I needed sleep more than new content hahaha.

Week 0: Day 3- Sept 21, 2016

TL;DR Sick Ryuu sucks it up and goes to work anyway and has a interesting realization about Lv-ing up his life.

Title  basically says it all, felling maybe 10% better than yesterday and being out sick is really the worst when you are a teacher so I decided to just take whole bunch of drugs and go in anyway. I also decided that it was probably better if I didn't go into the gym and decided that I would just do a 1h yoga session instead. Even so, it took a whole bunch of will power to start that yoga session >_< and I kind of felt like stitch the whole time.

yoga humour stitch

I'm also beginning to realize at just how quickly I'm get frustrated at games when they start to become "unfun" (stupid jumping puzzles in Destiny) to the point of just turning them of and find one of the other100,000 other things that I would ratter be doing, that would actually be fun, and that will actually be improving my life. It is interesting to me that normally the more I get into trying to improve my life how often I decide that games, even the ones I like just aren't worth my most precious resource, time.

Week 0: Day 4- Sept 22, 2016

TL;DR Ryuu is confused and discouraged by his weight

200w.gif

So I woke up and took my weight, as I do every Thursday morning, and if there is one thing that being sick is good for it is loosing weight, I went from 169.6 to 167lbs, but the strange and discouraging part was that my scale kept giving me ever increasing body fat %s every time I got on it kept going up. Starting at 22.8% and going up all the way to 23.8% which just sucks because either way its another increase from last week of 22.6% :( And while I mentally know that I shouldn't really trust the scale 100% its hard not to get discouraged seeing your BF% go up when you've been putting so much hard working to making it go down.

I think I might get some of the calipers to measure my BF% and just do a 2nd check (kind of like a second opinion with a Dr.) to see if my scale really is accurate. Anyone have any other thoughts on such an odd BF% measurements?

I know the scale measures bodyfat by sending a tiny bit of electricity through your body and measures the resistance. That number can be affected by the amount of fluid in your body. So it's not very accurate.

I think calipers are a good idea

I think it's tough to get a reliable reading from calipers too.  It might even be less reliable?  Do you keep track of the numbers you get each week?  If you keep it in a log or a spreadsheet it might be better to track the average as this will even out some of the 'noise' as it fluctuates each week.  Either way, try not to put too much stock in it.  Take a waist measurement monthly or go by how your clothes are fitting.

Darn I'd hoped they'd be more reliable. Yeah, I keep track of all my measurements in MyFittnessPal and while helpful it's still kind of sad to see the graphs just keep going up :/ Very true, I normally take them every 2-3 weeks or so, so I'll probably take them next Thursday and hopefully they will be a better gauge of my progress.
