Welcome to the Scouts Tavern!

 

After a long day of scoutery it is nice to sit down with a couple of friends and share tales and news of our adventures.

Everyone is welcome at the Tavern as long as you have a tale to spin and or song to sing.

The main character's ego is a bit hard to choke down, but I the prose is quite good underneath it all.

 

I was also recently reading the Stormlight Saga by Sanderson, which is pretty good as well, a different type of magic.

 

I suppose I should stop derailing the tavern with bookish talk :D

Stormlight is amazing, though so large its a struggle to start them. My favourite of his is definitely the Mistborn books, it really introduced the diversity you can truly get with traditional epic fantasy.

 

So what do you Scouts do other than run?

I've come to have issue with the semi-recent change from 300-500 page Fantasy book I used to read to these 1000+ page TOMES - which I blame Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series for.  

 

Finished reading the first two book in Matt Colville's Ratcatcher (Priest and Thief respectively) series and loved them - can't wait for him to finish them!

We run, swim, hike, bike, jog ... occasionally nap ;)

Hi Scouts. I think I might be a scout in denial. I'm all about OCR so for the longest time I told myself I wasn't a runner because I lifted and did a lot of strength training. 

 

And I realized I signed up for a couple ultramarathons this year without thinking much of it (first one Nov 6!!!). Guys, I think I'm a runner.

You belong where ever you like it the best, but yes we accept all ultra runners with open arms.

How long are your races? And are you going anywhere pretty?

I wanted to ask, how much do you tend to eat after a 5k, especially as after a while gone without running. I went on a run yesterday and came back ravenous and I feel like I ate too much but I want to know how normal this is.

As a general rule of thumb, you should eat slowly until you are no longer hungry--not full. By eating slowly, you give your body more time to react to what you've consumed. The proper amount of food leaves you satisfied, which you'll find feels very different than that overstuffed-stretchy-pants level of full. Another strategy you can use is to put your fork all the way down  on your plate while you chew. It is a really slow way to eat, but you won't end up in a food coma. :)

Thanks for the advice! I'm also slightly concerned over the quality of the food. I was really after cereal once I got home, despite the fact that I'm trying to stay Paleo. Is this a product of having eaten it all my life or due to my body actually wanting it? Also, the satiation of the food didn't really affect me this time, only the quantity.

We have not had one for several challenges now. I actually can't remember if the last one was around March or before that.

It's pretty natural to want carbs after a hard workout. Try to keep them good quality, and if you have grains at least make them whole grains (oatmeal over Count Chocula)  and make sure you add in some protein to help your muscles recover.

Yeah, I don't think we've had one since I started doing challenges with the Scouts. I'd love to have a mini! Any ideas?
