Mad Hatter climbs the ranks

This challenge is going to be focused on climbing and strength, because I'm feeling weak as a kitten and I don't like it and nothing makes me feel as strong as bouldering hard. Plus, I have a GMB workshop coming up, as well as a trip to Finland which will certainly involve climbing and I don't want to embarrass myself toooo much. :P

Basically I want to go from this

to this

giphy.gif

or, you know, as much as I can manage in a few weeks. ;)

Here's the plan:

Goal 1: Boulder more

Climb 2-3x/week and climb hard (whenever my body is up for it). That means trying hard moves more than once before giving up, and not avoiding problems that look difficult. I've been quite paranoid because of my finger but now it's finally ok to push harder, just need to overcome the mental barrier.

Goal 2: Core

Dragon flag progressions and/or general conditioning at least 2-3x/week.

Goal 3: Rings

Play on the rings 1-2x/week, not a priority but I want to get used to rings again before the workshop. Also pull-ups.

Goal 4: Balance

Balancy yoga 1-2x/week (any videos are welcome here!)

Goal 5: Funky squats

Leg day at least 1x/week where I mess about with weird squats.

Goal 6: Maintenance

Rice bucket and/or wrist stretches at least 4x/week.

The plan has a lot of pitfalls, especially since I'm going to Boston on Friday, but I'll do my best!

Since I went climbing yesterday I'm totally going to count it. ;)

It was a weird session. At first I got incredibly pumped forearms and crampy hands and I even had to jump off the final hold of a problem because I actually couldn't feel my grip working anymore. Scary! I took a break to let it settle and drank the coconut water that I happened to find in my bag, and surprisingly it seemed to help. After that I could climb relatively ok. I climbed mainly stuff that was too hard for me, which admittedly is almost everything at this point. :( At least it feels like it, especially with the new grading system. It's really dumb, but mentally it feels like I've lost so much more climbing skills since before I was dabbling in black problems and now I'm struggling with the easiest red problems. Which makes no sense since the colour grading doesn't actually correspond to the number grade. :hopelessness: Not that it matters, right? (Thanks @annyshay for the article.) At the moment I can typically climb most 6a's I think, struggle on the 6a+'s, except sometimes when I find a problem that is particularly suited to me like the 6b+ that I flashed which felt just like climbing a tree. What I used to climb is not relevant. :)

You know I'm here for the climbing.

Also, one of my oldest friends is a Disney animator who worked on Mulan.

That's awesome! One of the few Disney movies that actually has a cool female lead! :D

I've been feeling kind of bleeh and super tired like I'm fighting off a cold so I've been mostly doing a whole lotta nothing. Today I worked from home/napped and in the afternoon I felt well enough for a climb. Or well enough to go even though it might be a silly idea. ;) But I'm flying out to Boston tomorrow morning and I don't know when my next climbing session will be so ya know, need to get my climb in just in case. :)

Surprisingly it was a fine session. I tried some of the problems I did last time and I managed two of them easily, and two other ones I still couldn't do but up until the crux I climbed them with much more ease. So there's some kind of progress! I worked hard on a 6b problem which I could do in two parts, but I was too tired to string them together at that point. Next time!

Afterwards I did a tiny bit of handbalancing (sloooowly getting the feel for them again), a few pull-ups and a bit of core for some bonus challenge points.

Now I need to, ahem, unpack my suitcases from Burning Man so I can pack for my next trip.  I've done one so far - GO ME!

Obviously you're no stranger to overseas flights, but just to share- my favorite thing to do to avoid airport plagues (at least on European airlines) is drink nothing but orange juice and water. I'm sure it does zilch to actually boost the immune system at that point, but, I dunno, placebo effect?

(Note, I do not recommend this on u.s. airlines because their orange juice tastes like shit.)

I remember reading an article a long time ago about how tastebuds change when flying. It for example explained why tomato juice is so much more popular - and not only in the form of Bloody Marys. ;) Can't remember the details (great story right :P) but I find it really interesting that our senses actually change in different environments!

Thank you!!

After lots of drugs and wine I seem to feel somewhat better today. :) So hopefully things are heading in the right directions so I'll be well enough for Raptron shenanigans. And work. ;)
