it's a term that I'm realizing I've made up, to kind of summarize my impression that our bodies are so infinitely adaptable that if you do one kind of exercise all the time, your body will adapt to it, and you'll stop seeing gainz - however that looks to you, in either muscle building, or specifically for cardio - you will stop burning as many calories as you first did.

Jumping in here! (Can't believe I haven't been following until now? This is an awesome challenge!)

I totally know what you mean. I just got off of running a half marathon a couple of weeks ago and yet still have a hard time completing some of my classes at my gym that contain a lot of cardio/bw mix stuff. My body adapted so much to running that now throwing in dance moves and kickboxing is enough that it just doesn't know if it can handle it sometimes. I'm hoping that means I'll start seeing more progress, but mostly I just want to wear a badge that says "No, really, I am in shape, promise."

I also think it adapts to the food you give it!

Like it goes, "Oh gee, same breakfast and lunch, every day, all year + the same exercises going out... ok, let's adapt to make this a complete wash calorically.  That's what we get will = that's what we burn.  Sure!   We can live off this.  Good going mate!"

When we're all like, "NOOOO It's easy to count calories when it's all the same!  That's the only reason I am doing it!  Don't adapt!  Don't adapt!  LOSE WEIGHT DAMN YOU!"

I am honestly not sure if this has any science behind it, and it might just be my observation. but, I personally have never *lost weight* without frequently mixing up my activities. Now that I'm at a place where I'm kind of chasing performance but also am secretly hoping my stomach will just melt away (seriously I'm so close, but at the point where I'll need to really double down on diet to get to the next plateau, I think) - it's a really hard balance to figure out how to do the cardio things that will improve my running performance PLUS find time to mix in the muscle focus that I am pretty sure I need to do in order to simultaneously slim down.

Gotcha. Sounds a lot like Louis Simmons' Law Of Accommodation, and Dan John's concept of Inefficient Exercise.

If I recall I ran my half marathon a few years ago with like 800+ calories, according to my Garmin. I didn't even use up all the calories from the bag of potato chips I ate the fay prior. Haha. That's why they say the worse athletes burn more calories.

so it's been a pretty busy few days. this is the best story I have: I was out running at 530 am in the dark on thursday, as I do, and with the ridiculous shoes I'm wearing right now (they're 1 1/2 sizes too big to accommodate my very wide-across-the-ball-of-my-feet feet) and being so tired I totally tripped over my own toes and on my way to face plant I thought "Self, you are going to break your face if you don't throw your shoulder into this one!" and so I threw my shoulder at the ground instead of my face and went straight into a perfect shoulder roll and up into a crouch, at which point I noticed that there were cars heading towards me and I thought "Self, you do NOT want to talk to anyone about what just happened right now. You better keep running." so I popped up and kept running.

Other best stories include GOLF SPORT, wherein my drives got better and better during the day but my putting got worse and worse. eh.

 f4b168619aa502e8e9b18b08bf909aac.jpg

also my team won the trophies for best team score. GOLFSPORT!!!

 bd79ac44218563fc0f216cc96fda2ea6.jpg

in other news though, I am not doing stellar by the metric of doing all the things. I didn't run wednesday because I was pooped. I did do 3 miles on thursday (like a NINJA) but I didn't do TKD on thursday night b/c we had some out of town relatives in and I had dinner with them. Fridya I also did not do anything. I didn't run on sat. or on sunday. GOLFSPORT kind of kicked my butt, it was exhausting (and took SEVEN HOURS).

And now it's monday, and I had to get up at 4:20 AM to drive to the airport and fly to Nashville for work. I brought my running stuff with and plan to run tomorrow and Wednesday, but I need to figure out a route / etc. ALSO I AM SO TIRED.

KJ stories are the best!

They have amusement value!  Penchant for producing wide, genuine smiles.  EPICNESS.  And more!

I still feel like you are doing all the things!   Just, they are somewhat different things the things you thought you were going to do.   And oh god, 7 hours of golfsport?   I'd have died.  Way to go sticking that out!

you're right, maybe they are all just different things. and I didn't even tell you all about my failed attempt to spin one mile of yarn last week (spoiler: I did NOT get to one mile).

TODAY I woke up after 8 1/2 hours of sleep feeling fairly refreshed. I only had about 3 1/2 hours of sleep the night before, that was the absolute pits. I didn't go for a run but I did attempt a yoga routine for arms and WHOA it was too hard for me. (it was this one: https://www.doyogawithme.com/content/hatha-yoga-arm-strength and I had to take breaks half way through before I just stopped.) a good reminder that I have been REALLY neglecting the upper half of my body.

I have a big day of performance review and figuring out my new job squeezed in with hobnobbing and trying to get actual work done. yikes. I am going to stop at the gas station across from the hotel on my walk to work and get some milk so I can mix my shake for breakfast, and get off on the right foot.

Oh, and travel food, it is the best.

I had an amazing deconstructed chicken pot pie for lunch yesterday.

and also I had real tennessee bbq (pork shoulder, which was notably chopped, not shredded) for dinner, which was so delicious. and turnip greens because GREENS. (I am not an expert on this but in my experience TN has a few local chains of BBQ. I grew up in the knoxville area where we always ate at Buddy's, here in Nashville they brought me to Jack's.)

I also brought lots of snacks? like a tiny jar of peanut butter and some apples, and some granola if I am able to locate yogurt, and a couple of apples. I was worried the TSA would take my peanut butter and protein shake powder, but they just swabbed it for explosives. PHEW.
