Jormungand: X - Assassin Shift

Jormungand

Recommended Posts

I've done the vast majority of my challenges in the Rangers since my time here, but I am beginning to focus almost all of my training into getting better at obstacle course races. I ran three this year, and I am looking at five or six in 2017. I am pretty decent at running and strength training, but I want to be as fluid as possible going through the obstacles, so I thought I'd throw in with you lot.

First Quest: MovNat - Starting with the basics for this. I saw somewhere on the forums someone discussing this 4-Week MovNat Primer, and I think it might be a good jumping off point. I like the elements of it, and I think it will be a good path to fostering greater control over my movement patterns.

Second Quest: 80/20 I need to focus on fueling my body properly the majority of the time, but I've never done well with following strict diets or programs. However, the 80/20 Principle rests well with what I feel is healthy and sustainable. Since it's less about restricting intake and more about feeling free to enjoy food a portion of the time, I will be diligent in keeping myself honest on here.

Third Quest: 50 Miles Not much to it. I need to start raising the number of miles I run so that I can through these courses easier. I am looking at running at least two Tough Mudders and going for my Spartan Trifecta next year. Not only do I want to run them, but I want to excel at them. Can't do that without logging some miles. I plan on running at least 50 miles during this challenge.

That's that. I hope you'll have me, Assassins. I'm looking forward to it.

Thank you. I would recommend them to anyone who even has a passing interest in them (and probably even to those who don't).

Welcome. I have been looking at movnat also might drop the money on it if I hit my 450 point goal. Best of luck. I'll be following your progress with the assassin's.

Thanks. I've been going through their ebook and reading more into the whole process. I like what I've read so far, but I'm trying to make sure I don't just fall into the lure of something new and shiny.

Glad to have you along. I've done a few Tough Mudders, and I think it's time that I give Spartans a shot.

Still kind of bummed that I skipped out on all of my OCR options this year.  Next year I'll have to make the time somehow!

We really do have some common undercurrents this time. Your MovNat program is really quite different from the Elements program I'm working on, but the objectives seem really similar – "mastery" of our bodies and everything we can do with them. That ability, of course, is useful for just about any activity imaginable. Following for the motivation!

My Spartan and Mud Hero both went pretty good last year, but the dream would be to average more than one per year.  #toobusyforschool

Welcome as always. I looked through the Elements program. Very intriguing. I'm really starting to enjoy workouts that don't require anything but what we're born with. Don't get me wrong, I love kettlebells as much as the next guy, but there's something to harnessing the potential that we already have.

I started the 4-Week MovNat Primer (4WMNP) this morning. I actually really enjoyed going through the movements. It wasn't overly taxing, but even the simple movements were not as easy as I thought they'd be. I thought I would just breeze through these movements, but I was pleasantly surprised at how I felt working through each one, even the simple ones like the Stepping Over. Overall, I am really looking forward to seeing how the rest of the challenge goes.

I like your shift in focus on this challenge. It's always nice to spice things up a bit every now and then. I expect to see you doing something like this by the end of the challenge :P

A failed attempt at mowing the yard resulted in a 4 mile run. Couldn't get the mower to keep the blade engaged so I just said to hell with it. I'm sure the belt will need replaced, which is a pain. At least I got the run in still. And that helped my mood.

Like they say, though, when life gives you lemons, you say fuck the lemons and drink a beer instead.

I'm trying to imagine how going for a mow turns into four miles of running... I'm picturing a runaway mower, a high-speed foot chase, maybe dodging some traffic... which is really helping my mood.

Cheers! :very_drunk:

I literally LOL'd at this.

A 4 mile run sounds awesome. I basically took a whole week off from walking/running/hiking last week. In my head I blamed the weather, but really I was just being lazy. Maybe I need a runaway mower to get me motivated.

Not quite as epic as all that: basically, I'd intended to mow the lawn and the mower wasn't cooperating, so I went for a run instead. I will try to watch my syntax next time so that those reading don't think of me as some sort of competitive, lawn-mowing, long-distance runner. Although, the idea of getting the mileage in while still having a manicured yard is alluring.

Week 1 Recap:

I finished the first week of the 4-Week Movnat Primer. For the first day or two, I was a little worried that the movements might be too easy or simplistic, but by the end of the week, the reps had upped enough that I was definitely feeling some of the burn by the end. So, I am definitely looking forward to see how the rest plays out. I won't judge these next several weeks too quickly. Last week, I got 10.5 miles in for running. That total is a little behind what I should be averaging, but the 50-mile goal is not completely out of reach. Still plenty of time to get caught up. My food goal is a little closer to 65/35, but the ally and I are already making some positive steps to improve our meals. She did a lot of meal prep last night after we went grocery shopping, so I'm looking to rein in any slippage.

Overall , I am looking forward to making even more and better progress as the challenge continues. I'm not completely unhappy with where things went during Week 1, but I think I'm making some solid steps forward to tighten it all down.

I think next time you need to lug your sledgehammer while running after the mower, like a crazy viking Wiley Coyote chasing the roadrunner. Meep meep!

If it comes to that, I will make sure to give it a proper Viking funeral after smashing it into a million pieces.

Week 2 Recap:

I guess it's time to finally update this. I am (at the moment) current on the 4-Week MovNat Primer. I did the last day's movements of the second week yesterday, and I plan to do the third week each weekday of this week to get caught back up. Some of the movements that are just holding in various crouches are good, but they sure do burn up the muscles where my toes and feet meet and where my thighs meet my knees. It's a good burn though. I got in 12.5 miles of running last week, which is still behind where I need to be for the challenge, but at least I didn't lose any ground. Plus, I got in 13 miles on my bike last Saturday, so there's a little bonus action in there. I definitely ate better last week than the week before for the most part. Through the week, we mostly ate prepped meals for lunch and cooked at home during the evenings. My birthday was on Sunday, and the ally and I had a few meals that fell closer to the 20 portion of the 80/20 rule, but I felt pretty good about it considering that we did pretty well leading up to it. And, screw it. It was my birthday.

I've been pretty inactive lately here on the boards, but I will try to get caught up with you all this week. I hope you are all crushing it this week and plow through the rest of the challenge with a vengeance.

All too often when people disappear around here, it's because they're struggling with their goals, or they've lost their drive or whatever. But you? You come in like, "Oh, hey. Been killin' it, is all. What up?" Bam. Awesome.

Life happens, and we all gotta deal with what's in front of our faces every day, first. Just keep dropping in when you can, to remind us all what we should aspire to.

And happy birthday!

You're not wrong there. I appreciate the kind words.

Life certainly has been happening. I was traveling Tuesday-Friday last week and will be doing the same this coming week. Then, I will be home for a while. It's not that I mind traveling, and I'm thankful for the learning opportunities that I have, but it is nice to be home.

Reading up on all of your challenges is refreshing and it's great to see you all doing so well. Sometimes I need a reminder why I participate in these boards. You're all inspiring.
