Severine Posted September 29, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 29, 2016 Yesterday started out mediocre but ended up pretty great...and so far today the main thing that has happened is that our garage door broke, so hopefully today will have a similar pattern and improve Went on an impromptu mini-hike with a friend last night who really needed to talk. He's in his late 20s and sorting through a lot of big questions - trying to figure out what to do when his current job ends (he's an assistant farm manager, so he'll be out of work mid-November) and what his goals are and what kind of life he wants to build, etc. It was great to talk with him and we ended up hiking 4 or 5 miles around some hilly trails near his work. We also went to a decent little veg'n restaurant with tasty healthy food and it was nice to have going out for dinner not be a huge indulgence. Work is winding down slowly. There hasn't been a frost yet, so I'm still harvesting at the flower farm, but between the drought and the lower temperatures there's less harvesting to do than before. Which is good for time management, and bad for money...overall I'm happy about it. There will be a killing frost soon (I mean, probably soon? Predicting weather these days is impossible) and then things at the farm will transition to field cleanup and other season-end tasks. Those tasks are physically much dirtier and more demanding than harvest (pulling up trellis and groundcloth, mowing and discing, etc.) but often very satisfying because you do it once and it's done. My business partner is much more relaxed about my leaving the business now, so the social stress of that has faded which takes a lot of weight off my mind. As for the restaurant garden, I'll probably be wrapped up there by mid-October if all goes according to plan. This is my last week of having to muck out the goat stalls, though, so that's 1.5 hours a week that will suddenly markedly improve. I think sleep hygiene and no caffeine is actually starting to help. I'm still up much of the night but I am probably getting 2-3 hours of sleep, even if it's not super deep sleep. And I feel more relaxed than I did before. I'm eating well and tracking, and getting exercise, and lo and behold I am feeling better and that in turn makes everything else easier. Just like I knew it would. It's infuriating that the solution to improving things is so obvious and effective! Because of course, just as feeling good is self-perpetuating, so is feeling crappy...and man, it can be so hard to turn the page and get back on track when you're tired and sluggish from lack of sleep and bad nutrition and all you want to do is lounge and eat poorly. My family and I just watched "In Defense Of Food" it made not only myself but my husband and my kids look at food differently, plus it gets into details of the history of how America got us all confused about food. Good job on turning that around. I think I'll manage to get back on it in the next few days too, at least the walking since I'll be out and about with friends. Yay for learning new things! A quick recap on things long past: -cancer sucks. It's the worst. One of my friend's baby recently passed because of effing cancer. And my mom had breast cancer (does that ever become past tense though?) so sorry for you and your partner. :/ - REAL BAGGUETTES. It's fortunate I live nowhere near Boston. I studied in France and abso-frick-a-lutely nothing compares! -I thought it was funny that you said west side story "probably has a happy ending" cuz it don't. -you sound like an amazing friend. All of us could use a friend who will take us on hikes to sort our life out. Love how mindful you are approaching this challenge.
