Finally healed up. So it's time to ease back into awesome. I was watching Captain America: Civil War last week. I noticed that I could name or understand so many of the moves in the movie, it just ratified my quest. While some of my knowledge is from the academic study of things like professional wrestling, free running, or other demonstration/tricking arts, some of the other things are from real experiences or useful training I've had in my life. Clearly I'm not a real super hero/stuntman, etc. I can't do a dash vault or a cong, I can't do a muscle up.

I turn 49 in October, here is what I can do that I couldn't do at 47:

-I can get over a 10' brick wall quickly but medium efficiency (still requires effort) and down with minimum impact (drop to cat hang)

-I can pass a 5' wall/elevation change efficiently with little effort, and minimum impact (drop to cat/gargoyle get down)

-I can pass a 3' foot wall one handed in any direction (speed, lazy, turn, etc) with almost no effort.

-I can survive a ground and pound from most untrained opponents:  I haven't been manhandled by an untrained student in over a year (including ones that are significantly stronger/more athletic than I am).

-I can do a cartwheel (standing or from squat). I can do basic Capoeira.

-I can break fall or roll out on any surface in any direction with no significant injury. Roll on cement without a scratch, yes. Break fall in grass, yes. Break fall on Cement. Hope to never find out.

-I can do a full squat comfortably with about a 1/2" heel raise. May take another year or two to get a$$ to grass flat footed. I can "sit in seiza" for a few minutes without extreme pain, (I can do all the beginning MOVNAT ground positions)

-I can block about 80% of strikes from untrained/lightly trained strikers, or even moderately trained strikers at long range (close range boxing range with no takedowns still screws me up).

-I'm about as functionally strong as I have ever been: I can safely deadlift/squat/bench my body weight (250) and could probably get 300+ in an emergency.

-My practical shooting is maintaining: While better than two years ago, it's no where near my peak. Point shooting is OK (10 yard reflex shoot is still on target). It can still takes me up to two seconds to get a well aimed shot off at 25 yards with conventional iron sites.

This Challenge:

Combatives:

MACP/BJJ/MMA Striking 3 times a week at work (hopefully), Sunday Fight Club (Gracie Combatives/Krav Maga Worldwide) at home once a week. KMW Daily Curriculum on any days missed. Front Site Post eye training 2-5 minutes with bed time routine (not graded).

Cross Training: (Tactical Strength and Conditioning (TASC), MovNat Strength and Conditioning)

Tactical Strength and Conditioning program at work 4 days a week. MovNat Strength and Conditioning if I miss one at work.

Mixed Movement: (running, walking, hiking, balancing, jumping, crawling, climbing, swimming, Parkour, dancing, Capoeira, physical labor, informal training, throwing, catching)

Environmental Movement (Parkour/MovNat) integrated into cross training as much as possible. Swimming, Hiking, Working, etc.. movements integrated. Also includes recovery.

Adulting:

Always struggled with being a grownup. Heroes should do grown up stuff.

My tastes have not changed since I was 14. Only my responsibilities have. I gave the Army 20 years to make my life into a story someone would read. Now I have to be my own dungeonmaster. Responsibilities mean I have to limit my superhero training to what is practical. But it's still fun.

Monday Night: Front Site Post drills, two minutes.

Tue Morning:

part 1: warmup and MovNat Climbing Progressions (dead hangs, side swing  traverses, forward swing traverses, forward power traverse, side power traverses, pull ups, hanging side foot lifts, hanging knee tucks, a couple hanging bar to knees, elbow pull ups)

part 2: Conventional bodybuilding push/pull (reverse pyramid machine bench press, dips, lat pull downs, cable flys, clean and presses, did one set of curls and tricep overhead presses. Mild cardio because no more than 30 seconds rest. ran out of time.

part 3: Parkour, 10 minutes, 30 second work, 30 seconds rest. Just like with Jujitsu, technique matters even more when you are tired!

I really need to learn more about MovNat, where's a good place to get started?

Sent from the dragon's lair

"Movement" is a broader concept than "Fitness". Instead of doing a pullups for pullups sake, you do pullups as part of a climbing skill progression.  No body shaming. No trying to get on a leader board. It's non competitive.

While you shouldn't need a movement coach, most of us do. Because we spend most of our time in a self imposed zoo.

MovNat is a program to help people to become more effective at movement practice. It can be integrated with almost any activity.

Tue Evening: Pistol Site post practice, also lead cub scout group.

Wed: Lunch: First full strength roll in BJJ class in months. Lasted four rounds and still had gas. Got destroyed by higher belts, but not because I was out of shape, I was just out skilled.

Wed: Evening: Swimming: Did laps, lost count. Threw my kids around. acted as base for daughter and her friend doing jumps off my shoulders, great for balance.

Reminds me of last week, I walked in [late] for a 0730 open mat, and the only two people there were the two jacked brown belts with very unpleasant top games. Needless to say I got smashed for the next hour, in part probably because I couldn't stop talking shit about how one of them was on the Masters 3 division now. Good times.

You'll have to take my word that I got destroyed by higher belts.  Or, if you were talking about the front flip, see below. LOL either way.

Front flip? Nice. I wish I could do that.

Ok, so it's not like I landed correctly, I just got my own fat A$$ over my own fat head.. and landed in kind of a sitting position in a giant vat of foam squares. With all the ukimi you do, you could do that, I'm sure.  It's only a thing because I have like a 7 dexterity or something, and I'm old.

I've been out for the last few weeks, because I've been working on something....I finished my movement park...  My whole yard back yard is a porch. So I had to be creative.

We have a brown belt who is quite frankly just sandbagging for tournament purposes. He should have made black years ago. He's not a bully, but I'm not learning anything. Other than he captain kirk'd me onto the cement and my breakfall worked perfectly. It's just lame.

Haha. Yeah, one just got his black belt two days ago. I'd like to think I'm learning something by getting smashed day-in and day-out, more than when I'm throwing armbars at will on someone, just from the sheer effort. Probably a just world fallacy, like when people think they deserve more weight loss because they work harder. For all I know I'm just spinning my wheels. I don't know, there seems to be a lot of room for bro science in martial arts; I'll just have to grind it out until I know better. Sometimes though it leaves me demoralized and I don't show up for a few days; that can't be good. Haha

By the way, I've also been interested in MovNat. If one of their courses comes my way, I'll probably give it a go.

On a rather similar note, are you familiar with Bud Jeffries? His Instagram and Facebook pages are pretty interesting.

I haven't taken any movnat courses, I just like their attitude. Because I want to do everything. I would rather have a "c" in every subject than an A in one and an F in everything else. Also, I like having that "jujitsu" attitude about obstacles and lifting, there are more efficient ways to do something.

I think your average guy trying to be Bud Jeffries is going to get hurt, but he's having fun, so more power to him.
