The Way of Vikings: Rurik Harrgath

Rurik Harrgath

Sneaky sneaky.

It was great meeting you at Camp, Rurik. Definitely did not get enough chances to talk and hang out with you. But I freaking loved you repeating to everyone nervous at the PL Comp that mantra of "Whether you think you can or can't, you're right." Definitely got me through a few of my lifts.

Look forward to remedying that whole "not enough talking to you" next year!

Oh man, I should have made the long walk over to the warrior forum sooner! That was a great write up about camp. Makes me simultaneously feel like I would love it and yet I don't know if this introvert could party as had as a viking barbarian. Following now, sorry it took me so long!

Hah I remember everyone gathering around and me looking at you and being like "uh, you can definitely pull that right?".  Kinda disappointed we didn't get to see 575 though!

This is seriously unusual territory for a CrossFit gym, especially one in so small a city as mine!

Now to warm up that 20 Seconds of Courage to speak with my coach this weekend...

My gym has several members that just pay for access and they get their lifts in off to the side while we do our WODs.

Then again, my gym is a hybrid CF/Strongman gym so it probably isn't the norm. Definitely not unheard though.  I can't imagine your coach will be upset.

Eat.

My favorite hobby right now is eating.  My second favorite favorite hobby is lifting.

(So tell me about yourself.)

Well.  I'm always hungry and I'm always tired.

They do not know the horrors. They don't. Last year I left camp planning on training hills just to make it easier to get to my bunk.

Nice thing about new campers is that they didn't see me pull last year, so I could still surprise people with it.

I know!  That might be where my grandmother found the nickname.  She was an angry Norwegian woman who thought was birth name was too boring and didn't suit the 'proper Viking bastard' I was as a child.  Ergo, Rurik in honor of the medieval Varangian ruler of Novgorod.  ;)

After a rough-ass Friday (and whole week), all of these replies are really the pick me up I needed.  You nerds are amazing!

It was definitely a #RedBand day.

Not really. I know both spezzy and chammy have been down that road. There's probably more warriors I'm missing. Then there's also Tia-Clair Toomey who got 2nd place in the '15 and '16 CF Games before representing Australia in the Rio Olympics weightlifting.

Most Games-level athletes are going to be sub-Olympian but still putting up impressive numbers.  It's their diverse specialties that makes them fit the Ranger mold.  ;)

Note that *everybody* around here has the tireds from being at Camp.  I woke up late this morning.  Again.  But it is Friday.  Tomorrow I can wake up whenever I feel like waking up.  Sunday I am planning and "upgraded" rest day.

Good to hear.  Makes me feel way more normal than I've been feeling otherwise.

False. It causes us to giggle and lose our core tightness while we watch from the squat racks doing 405 squat singles. This happened Tuesday night.

It was amazing.  I especially loved both your set-up and the your roar at the top of the pull.  Beast Mode!

God my Back Squat is so terribly overdue for like a 20# PR that I just cannot express how frustrating it is, haha.

I'm glad we met before Camp but now I'm wishing we'd taken more time there to become better acquainted.  Well, we have the forums and a year before we do it all over again, so #SquadGoals, right?  And I cannot take entire credit for that mantra... I stole it from my gym, but it's an absolute doozie.  I never thought we would live in a world where I was the hard-charging, loud-mouthed motivator screaming at the top of my lungs to get someone else moving a heavy bar.

But I love that part of my personality.  ;)

I stopped and read my own signature the other day for some reason.  Can't recall why.  But that moment, and the whirlwind rollercoaster of #Feels I've been going through this week really hammered home your personification of my character in that earlier fictional narrative.

My first ring muscle-up was probably the ultimate achievement in my physical development, but that 4 plate deadlift was the moment I knew there was more Warrior lurking beneath the surface than I had ever imagined...

Apparently I'm more Sam Dancer than Josh Bridges.  Who knew?

I was in Misty Mountains 2 (basically as high up as MM1, and I was upstairs). Inebriated, I mostly just kept trying to get Mr Ix to lay on the grass and watch the stars with me all the way up. Like ANTS are a real concern :| (He finally gave in the last day, and the day before that he was like here lay on this ant-free picnic table yes I'm sure no ants like picnics)

If anything, the climb seemed easier drunk because I was paying wayyy too much attention to everything besides my screaming legs.

It felt great to get back to some proper Oly today, but I'd still rather be deadlifting.

And that's exactly what I'll be doing tomorrow.  Remember that 20# missing from the bar at the CNF PL meet?  Yeah, that's happening tomorrow.

Today in a nutshell:

Seriously, 225# was an absolute breeze.  I blame the camera!  Still, that's probably a Push Press PR, sloppy though it was.  #CrossfitBooty #MyLiftersAreBrighterThanYours

I don't know what it is about that story but it paints a really pleasant picture.  Some of my favorite moments at Camp were those spent wandering the roads and around the cabins late at night, long after dark, and just enjoying the peace & quiet, the cool mountain air, and the brilliant starry sky.  Even barefoot.

All climbing is easier drunk, even those stupid Kirby's Dreamland stairs.  That's why I do cardio in a nutshell!  haha

Whether it's a berserker rage or a battle speech, if the encouragee does the thing then the manner of encouragement was automatically correct.
