Sorting Scouts! Or All Scouts go to Hogwarts!

welcome Scouts !

I'm all out of fancy gifs for we're going simple.

The Houses of Hogarts are

  • Gryffindor - values the virtues of courage, bravery and determination
  • Hufflepuff - values hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty
  • Ravenclaw - values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit
  • Slytherin - values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness

I'll post what each house's mini on Monday/Tuesday of that week, and you pick which house you want to participate in ... its 4 weeks of challenge so you can go through all 4 houses. You can not pick the same house you picked the previous week (ie you can repeat a house after a week at another house but not two weeks at 1 house)

Hopefully that makes sense :)

Alight Scouts let's get to it!

Week 1 Mini!

  • Gryffindor - This week you are going to pay it forward
Take your 20 seconds of courage and do something kind for someone else!

  • Hufflepuff - Time try something new!
Go out and try a new fruit/vegetable that you've not had before! Eat it up!

  • Ravenclaw - Use a new skill/method in your challenge!
Are you running? Then try the Yasso 800 in your speed work. Walking? shifting from just walking to the run walk method

  • Slytherin - You task is to look at your own ambitions - think a short term goal that you can start working towards during a week or three.
Perhaps you want to reduce your debt - a long term goal but one you can start working on that now!

A ranger crashing the party to expand my horizons.

I'm in Hufflepuff this week.  I tried raw cucumbers in a salad last night.  It wasn't gross, but it wasn't pleasant either.  I can appreciate the crispness and freshness it gives to a salad, but the aroma is too overwhelming.  I have actually been enjoying fried cucumbers and rice on several occasions recently.  I'm sure I can find a way to enjoy raw cucumbers, but I've got to do something about that aroma.

Week 2 Mini!

  • Gryffindor -  Prove your determination - add 10% to any distance goals and go get 'em!
  • Hufflepuff -  Have some time with a loved one - could be a friend or family member
  • Ravenclaw -  Pick up a new book and give it a read - perhaps something from Neil deGrasse Tyson's list
  • Slytherin -    Borrow a skill from another guild - they won't mind they're all out Rang'ing or Monk'ing or whatever it is they do - try rucking from the Rangers or borrow a barbell from the rangers ... time to expand your horihorizons

I did the Distance goal last week for the Ranger Mini.  I could go for it again.  110 % of 5km is only 5.5km, which is less than what I did last week (6km).

I'm in the middle of reading a few books and making little progress due to them not being a priority.  Adding another book would be a bad idea, even though I really do want to pick up a few new things for inspiration in my RPG GMing.  Maybe I'm not that interested in the books I'm reading and I should dump them for something new.  I'll be at the library on Wednesday night.

Borrowing a skill could be on the table.  My back is not up for Warrior training, Scout and Ranger skills are out of bounds for me in the spirit of the mini, I am already borrowing Assassin skills participating in their minis, and I'm doing Monk stuff for the Ranger mini this week.  Druid could be the way to go.  I already meditate daily, but I could expand on it.  Or I could do Yoga or Tai Chi.

I need to think about my choice here a bit more before I decide.

I'm going Ravenclaw.  I've got 3 games to GM over the next month and I want to be well prepared.  A new book to inspire creativity is needed to spice up some possibly dull NPCs and encounters.  I'll be at the library tonight to browse.

Ok

Week 1 was Slytherin -- Working on the short term goal of being super productive for the rest of the semester -- short term since we have reached mid terms, and only have half the semester left. I also picked up two more short term classes, so this may prove to be the limits of my ambitions...

Week 2 is also Slytherin -- I've been druiding hardcore on Sundays, and I like it Hot yoga!

(But thank you, we just moved into our house and are very worried it'll be destroyed when we get back. I mean, the cinderblock frame will be there but as for the rest of it... who knows. :-/ )

Thanks for the video!  That guy had some great tips.  I'm not very good with voices, but I can watch my word choice per character background and education, then prepare some lines or catch-phrases with that in mind.  I've got an idea for a cave troll who will be chasing the PCs through a cave/tunnel referring to the PCs as "yummy num-nums" with lines like "Me likes yummy num-nums run, makes for yummy fun!" and "Run or fight, I catch you, I eats, sweaty num-nums are salty tweats!"

I'll look into the Terry Pratchett audio books.  Her writing is fun, but I'm looking forward to hearing the characters come to life.

Last night, I started reading a book I borrowed from a friend called Basic Fantasy RPG Guide book to give me some ideas for creatures and encounters I can weave together.  I've read through before to use as a reference for my We Be Goblins game, to avoid going full bore Pathfinder (which would have been overkill for such a simple story), but I didn't read everything.  Now is a good time to finish it.

Along with the Cave Troll, I decided to change the main witch villain's bodyguards from boring humans to menacing undead Orc Skeletons, which the PCs will need enchanted weapons to defeat.  I have a few options prepped to get them enchanted weapons, but if they are smart, then they won't encounter the orc skeletons and only see them, but from previous experience, these characters will be loud and attract attention.  Can't wait to play tonight!

I choose Gryffindor!  I struggle with communicating, because I am shy and lack confidence in myself, because I am not witty or clever, but I try to be and it mostly results in embarrassing myself.  This week I am at a conference for work where I know nobody.  Also, I have my Toastmasters "Communicating on Video" manual to start.  I need to make some new friends at the conference and record a 3 minute editorial for my Extra Life event to send to my friends.  Should be fun and challenging!

Success!  I made a few friends at the conference, then a few more singing Karaoke at a bar in Tombstone.  Lots of old country from an older crowd, but I rocked AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long" and Guns N Roses "Paradise City" with my raspy screaming.  It was a lot of fun and got a free beer from one of those new friends.  Too bad I'll likely never see those ole cowboys and girls again.  The Toastmasters / Extra Life video speech isn't ready yet.  I need to practice more.  I'm running out of time though.

I've been struggling with getting back into a routine after we had to evacuate from the storm. We didn't have power until late in the week, so any progress I could have make on laundry, cleaning out the fridge, etc was stalled. By the time I could actually do chores, I was firmly rooted into a comfy chair and just wanted to stay curled up under a blanket.

Anyway, I'm finally getting into the swing of things again. My kitchen is clean, I did food prep, and I'm halfway through laundry day.

Finished the this mini with 7.2 miles in two days.  Great job putting this mini together.  It gave me some new ways to challenge myself while being able to work towards my individual goals!
