Oh dear!

giphy.gif

But I'm here. I just got back from a road trip vacation in British Columbia (which was a blast). I had thought about making my thread before I left, but was feeling super indecisive about my goals. Now though, I'm feeling so refreshed and re-energised after not worrying about anything for a whole week, and I'm ready to get back to it!

Goal Number One: Don't eat like an asshole.

It's not even fun anyway. This is really my biggest priority going forward, because I need to get this nonsense under control.

Part 1: No eating out. Buying food at work / bailing on making supper and getting take out is expensive, never good for me, and always regretted.

 - Exception - I have to go out of town for a work thing during the last week of the challenge. Hopefully only for 3 days, but possibly longer. I will be super prepared and have awesome food for breakfast and lunch, but we'll be going out to eat as a group for dinner. I can still avoid eating like an asshole during this though. And at least the expensive part is negated, since I'll be reimbursed.

Part 2: Cut out the wheat. I'm not actually gluten intolerant or anything, but eating bread etc is a slippery damn slope that leads to cravings, bingeing and just way too much carbs in general. I used to be awesome about really barely eating any and that's somehow turned into like a daily exception. I want to get way back to a Primal style diet, and this is the first step. 1 variance per week permitted.

Part 3: Minimise alcohol. Not that I drink too much, per se, but more than I need to. And again, alcohol is expensive, and we're trying to get our finances back on track as well, so this is a good double whammy. I'll allow exceptions for social situations, (hanging out with the husband does not count as being social) and one freebie.

Part 4: Meal prep! This supports parts 1 and 3 as well. A little difficult to grade, but I will say that as long as I do at least one protein and two vegetable batches per week, and post my meal plan for dinners on here, we'll count that as success.

Since my diet goal is so expansive, I'll keep things simple elsewhere.

Goal Number Two: Move it.

Get 6 workouts done in the next three weeks. Kettlebells, yoga, whatever.

Goal Number Three: Watch less TV.

It's been getting mindless again lately. I have better things to do. No more than 4 hours per week, and at least two totally TV-free days per week.

Alrighty, folks, so what we have here is a road map to eating like a goddess, giving my muscles the time of day, and getting more productive crap done. It gonna be a good three weeks.

So much meal prep! Yesterday I made:

Grilled chicken thighs

Turkey/chicken mini meatloaves

Roasted Brussels sprouts

Two kinds of quinoa salad

And here is my dinner meal plan for the week:

Monday: chicken cauli green chili casserole, avo/tomato/feta salad

Tuesday: leftovers, if there's enough. If not, beef+ mushroom soup

Wednesday: dinner at parents -tortilla soup

Thursday: sweet/sour chicken thighs, braised cabbage

Friday: spaghetti squash "lasagna" boats

And here is my breakfast/lunch today:

2b2a34537d88c05dd09629625c4f7e78.jpg

The weekend went okayish overall - I abided by the rules (no take out and no wheat, even at the homemade brunch we went to on Sunday!) Metrics were not perfect, but not totally off. Also watched zero television, and drank zero alcohol.

I weighed in this morning - time to start tracking again. Of course, I know the scale isn't everything, but using it is a pretty good indicator that I'm trying to stay on track. I've gained 5lbs in the last few months - I am so sick of gaining and losing this same weight!

But I'm actually excited about getting my good eating habits back, and these next few weeks are going to be stellar. And just as this challenge is ending, that bootcamp I was supposed to start in September will be starting, so that will be a great pre-holiday launch pad. Good things acomin'!

Noms, that food looks good. Thinking I need the recipe for quinoa salad.

The quinoa salad in the picture (sorry, I never measure anything, but here's the gist)

I used the leaves leftover from trimming the brussels sprouts, and chopped those up. Sauteed in a little olive oil, s+p until wilted. Tossed with cooked quinoa, a little green onion and crumbled feta. Dressing was evoo, balsamic vinegar and spicy mustard. So easy!

The other one is my old standby favorite. Roasted red pepper, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes in oil, fresh garlic, black olives, feta and green onion. Evoo and balsamic dressing.

Alright, I'm officially tormenting you all with my food porn! This is dinner:

c420027b10df61a0021a09450e99e7c9.jpg

The casserole recipe is basically this one:

http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?e=738e93d3cd&u=cd34071781acae19c7d1fe912&id=4cd0127f08

Except I used a couple of cans of diced green chillies instead of the salsa verde.

The salad is just avocado, tomatoes, red bell pepper, red onion and feta, with a little evoo and acv.

Anyways. It's hella nom. Super easy. And while the casserole is drenched in dairy, it's low carb at least!

Update time!

Monday:

Food = good.

No wheat. No take out. No alcohol. Plan followed. Win.

The hubs and I watched a couple episodes of Luke Cage. Enjoyed very much. Acceptable use of TV time.

Tuesday:

Food = eh.

Unexpected birthday dinner for nephew at restaurant, so that definitely doesn't count as homemade food. Also had a drink, but that falls under the social category. Used up a variance for wheat (steak fajitas, nom!). A bit too much food overall for the day.

No TV today.

Wednesday:

Food = good.

No take out, no wheat, no alcohol. Metrics were nearly in track.

Also cooked up the chicken thighs I had marinating, so I'm good for protein for a while.

Dinner tonight will be a beef and mushroom soup -it's Whole 30 compliant, so hopefully my impending pictures won't cause any undue distress ;)

Didn't watch any TV last night again. Haven't actually managed to be productive yet, instead, but I'm working on it.

I am going to do a yoga workout tonight.

Ahhh, I spaced on yoga! I was making an active effort to be productive, and I put away a metric shit ton of laundry. (It was getting out of control...)

The pup and I met my sister and her people/dog at the off leash park, and they had a blast - Hyzer is finally starting to figure out this "play" thing :)

I also forgot to take pictures of dinner. It wasn't quite was I expected (more like eating a bowl of tomato/meat sauce) but it was fine. The hubs raved about it though.

Food in general yesterday was right on track on all counts, and metrics were in line!

We did watch one episode of Luke Cage before bed.

Great job.  I don't care what anyone says, nutrition is the hardest part of living healthy.  I still struggle with not stuffing my face with oreos/pop tarts instead of sweet potato.

This is the absolute truth.

Thanksgiving weekend was not a success story, healthy-eating wise. Nope, it was not.

But the food-based gatherings (three in two days!) are now over, the only leftovers we snagged are healthy ones, and it's back to our regularly scheduled food choices!

Meal prepping today - roasting spaghetti squash, making meat sauce, baking sweet potato.

This is true! My biggest criticism is that I did not mitigate the major meals with the other ones. But I also didn't do that "eat until you're so full you're sick" thing, so minor win!

Breakfast of protein and veggie leftovers is very satisfying.

Okay, so getting back on track has been a little rocky. I've had wheat the last couple days, and while I've had some good meals there have been some not so good ones too.

I did make the meat sauce, or as I sometimes like to call it (so I can justify just eating it by itself), "Italian chili". It's really good with a scoop of cottage cheese.

Spaghetti squash has also been roasted, and will be turned into "chow mein" tonight. I meant to get some beef going in the slow cooker for beef and broccoli, but I found a great deal on turkey necks yesterday, so the slow cooker is otherwise occupied making broth.

The hubs and I did a little kettlebell session on Monday! He wants to start using them, so that's awesome! We mostly did a variety of swings, and I started teaching him to do get ups. More to come!

Alcohol avoidance is one area that is going well - my only drinks have been in social situations... Aside from a splash of Bailey's in my coffee over the weekend.

No take out has also been good, although today I am going to buy soup at work.... It almost doesn't count though; the cook apprentices are making soup, from scratch and with local ingredients.. Yum!

Sorry I've been AWOL.. it's been a time around here lately. My brother's best friend died last Friday - the funeral was yesterday. I was also out of town last week for work... So yeah. Been a little distracted.

But I really didn't want to leave yet another challenge thread with no closure.

As you can probably imagine, food while away was terrible. I think I almost had bread at every meal..

At least the dinners were worth it - we found an awesome restaurant near our hotel that was just within our allowance budget, and it was awesome. The first night, I had rotisserie lamb leg with barley risotto and veggies. The second night we basically ordered all the appetizers and shared them... Omg. Way too much food, but it was ridiculously good.

I have actually gotten in a couple workouts since I posted last!

Kind bailed on the TV challenge though... I didn't watch hardly any while I was gone, but didn't track it outside of that.

I did alright with the alcohol piece though - we did drink quite a bit on the trip, but technically that was social [emoji14]

So anyways. I've been going on about this bootcamp thing that my sister and i are supposed to be doing for a couple months now, and finally that has begun!

I wasn't able to attend the orientation night because I was gone, but I have gone through the resources they give you. The first bootcamp class is on Monday, but we also get unlimited access to a whole bunch of other classes around town. We are going to try an intro to Bikram yoga today... Which sounds like my own personal hell (me+ heat=death) but hey, it's free, apparently they don't turn it up as much for the intro class, and I figured I should at least try it before I say I hate it.

Generally though, I think we'll do the bootcamp classes, which are twice a week, and kettlebell classes.

The program also includes a "meal plan" and daily workout guide. I was very prepared to just throw myself into the meal plan and commit to it and see how it went... But it's kind of terribly put together! There's no overarching philosophy or explanation, just a list of meal, a catalogue of recipes (which only mostly match - as in there's recipes that aren't on the meal plan and vice versa) and portion sizes are listed very willy nilly. The meal content overall isn't bad - it's Paleo-ish (feta cheese is the only dairy listed, honey and stevia are used occasionally and there's oatmeal/quinoa/rice used semi-regularly) although much lighter protein than what I'm used to.

But now I'm torn - do I really want to try to follow this half assed guide? I'm kind of tempted to just take the inferred philosophy (paleo-lite) and use 21 day fix portioning. Thoughts?
