Rebel For Life!

 

I wanted to stop collecting 'underpants' and dig my heels in  on a challenge. The 'squirrel' kept telling me it was mid-challenge, and that i should collect more 'underpants.'

 

A while ago, Steve's book, Level Up Your Life, was on sale, through audible/amazon. I decided it was some good, cheap 'underpants.' In good rebel fashion, i have been listening to the book while biking or jogging. (which is a vast improvement from my sedentary computer wrangling lifestyle.) 

 

I've been a bit discouraged about challenges becuse i struggle to feel supported. Steve's occasional references to the rules of the rebellion highlighted in my mind rebel for life. It sunk in how real this can be. 

 

As I've been reading the book, he keeps talking about envisioning your level 50 character. I was struggling to figure out how to wear those underpants because most of his examples did not relate to me. I'm afraid of heights, i have no intent to jump out of a airplane. and feel like that's ridiculous. I was failing to connect with what he was trying to say. 

As i was working out and listening, i was trying to identify what things i got excited for, but nothing was even close to quest worthy. 

 

In chapter 6 or 7 today, as he was outlining the 10 or so categories that quests should come from, i started to realize there were some things in life worth looking forward to. 

 

this challenge is about the 'reset.' For those of you who are familiar with tom Clancy's writing, you'll recognize the character reference. In symbolic homage, about all i know about jack ryan is that he shows up in each of tom's books. The academic quests of this challenge will be reading or listening to a tom Clancy novel. pulling from druids or monks, will be discovery of what my inner yearnings want my character to become. The ranger of this challenge, will be developing an idea and anti-pattern for physical activity.

  1. Monk - up early
  2. Business - extra hour "at" work
  3. Fitness - physical activity during that hour, jogging, biking, body weight, or moov training. 
  4. Fun - either impressive accomplishment in computer game, or develop networking within streaming. 
  5. Nerd Fitness - Build out nerd fitness character and quests.
  6. Community - a group of people doing something

Yes- the Quest for this challenge (#5 below) is to flesh these out more. Fist post was the 15 min 'do it now' start.

 

Some more fleshing for: Ranger of the month

  1. Monk - up early
    1. Alarm is set for 5:30
    2. This mean at work 6-630
    3. + 8-9 hours = 2-3 pm
    4. Carpool is at 4 pm
    5. This means- Work a full day and have time for activity (Moov interval walking or biking)
    6. Success is done with enough time for activity.
  2. Business - extra hour "at" work
    1. this is 1.5 above
  3. Fitness - physical activity during that hour, jogging, biking, body weight, or moov training.

    2. Can be 'made up' by being active after getting home
  4. Fun - either impressive accomplishment in computer game, or develop networking within streaming. 
  5. Nerd Fitness - Build out nerd fitness character and quests.
    1. This is collecting underpants... 
    2. 15 min 3-5 times a week defining Level 50 Character
      1. Brainstorm Quests (feed back on points encouraged)
        1. Father- Camp for 3+ days with 4/5 year old in National forest by end of August  2017 (?master quest? / level boss? 100 XP?)
          1. Camp in back yard (repeatable adding steps each time)
            1. Camp fire 1 xp
            2. Cook dinner in fire 10 xp (roating hot dogs may not count)
            3. Set up tent 5 xp
            4. Sleep in tent 5 XP
            5. The whole night 20 xp
          2. Find National forest location 5 xp
  6. Bonus behavior- committing to it would be "Pulling the whole dungeon"
    1. Monk- Listen to religious text during drive to work
    2. Monk/ fun-  'read' Tom Clancy book (Learn about lvl 50 Jack Ryan)
      1. Read at least half
      2. Listien to entire
    3. Finish Level up Your Life

I think one of the coolest things about your Level 50 character - and this just may be my weirdo brain talking - is that probably without a doubt what you think you want now and what you will actually fall in love with fitness and lifestyle wise has a very big chance to CHANGE over the course of your journey!!  I just hit my 2 year Nerdiversary this past August and have just hit level 18, but what I thought I wanted two years ago is so WILDLY different from now, and it's kinda awesome!!  One of the best parts of my journey has been discovering new and exciting ideas and things to do along the way, things I didn't know I was capable of or even existed, and adding them to my arsenal. :)

 

That national forest campout is a killer long-term goal.

This weekend has been busier than anticipated writing good too we type of the challenge done. But congratulations to my brother in law for getting his Eagle Scout. I'm posting now because one of my goals for the challenges regular updates

6.3- I finished 'Level up your life'

Another attribute of my Level 50 is 'Community'

 

Mini quest completed:

  • Did research for Rec pass through work ($64 / Year vs $275)
  • Completed fire pit enough to use

Triumphs

  • Collected Underpants - Partly due to spending Tuesday in the ER with Wife (and looming ER Bill) I felt like a looming cloud this evening I retired to bed. Usually I watch some good Minecraft streamers. I switched to Som NF youtube vids. The underpants were faily enticing so no i am watching the 'talks at google' one while fixing my bike

 

Quest for the nex 7 days:

  • Read each post of the mini challenge (with Hacks of course) - Community
  • A level 2 may be reading each Ranger challenge thread 5 stinkin' pages!
  • A better level 2 / week 2 quest will be to Reply to 5-10 challenges OR Mini challenge post - Community
  • Add Jack Ryan / Tom Clancy books to my Good reads - Community
  • Continue 180 min of activity per week - Fitness

 

 

For my level one rewards I am trying to decide between:

  1. Audible subscription for books while active
  2. 1 Month rec pass (swimming is my prefered activity)
  3. Biking gloves- My hands/ fingers fall asleep after 20 min
  4. Moov HR- Heart rate while active is nerdy

 

I have talked about camping with my boy (4yr) right now we have plans to cook on a fire in the backyard. We have Potatoes, pancakes, eggs and bacon that should cook ok.

In the past when I have made improvements the most Influential was

  1. having a buddy or community to do it with (partly because I am a verbal processor and it is easier to verbal with people then todo lists
  2.  Music and now audio books
  3. Swimming

Congrats on finishing your first mini-quest. Hope week 2 has gone really well for you!

 

Replying to a few challenge threads, if you can find the time, is a good idea. Besides being a nice thing to do, it's a way to gradually let people get to know you. Eventually that will help draw a little more attention to your thread and people will be happy to support you when you need it.

 

But that being said, if you ever feel a little lonely around here, just drop a post on the "general chatter" (guild hall) thread.

I had 389 of 180 minuets of activity - 275 of witch was workout time!

I am on page 99 of 531 of No Remorse by Tom Clancy (18%)

 

I am doing a lot more being involved in some online communities (gaming)

 

If reply, let alone read every mini challenge I need to do a course adjustment

Week 3- I set a PR. On Friday I was 30 min away from the 180 target. So i hopped on the bike. and did it

Week for had some adjustment- in conjunction with the holiday week fro was a pass if I was up earl and if I got all my hours in at work. Thursday was a paid holiday but Friday the office was closed. I successful did not need to us any vacation to Friday (used comp time)

 

On page 150 of 531

 

Huge wins during this challenge Include:

  1. Meet my week objective
  2. Hit work hours each week
  3. Hit 180 min of activity each week. 4 adjusted
  4. On track for the next challenge.

 

Considering this challenge a success mean I hit level 1. the reward for this is Purchasing the Moov Heart rate monitor (Order page is open but had to finish this post before ordering)
