Cascade: Conquer the Basics - Part Two

Kestrel Grey

Recommended Posts

Last challenge did not get the attention that it deserved, between travel and illness. There will be even more distractions coming up so I feel it is even more important to stay focused on the basics.

The Targets:

1. Nutrition

Eat only Paleo-approved foods, with rice and legumes as allowed carb sources. Eat three servings of protein and veggies a day, and carbs must be within 90 minutes of exercise.

2. Exercise

Strength training 3/week. High intensity cardio 2/week.

I will allow 1-2 deviations from my nutrition a week, but no workouts can be missed unless sick or injured. Otherwise I end up skipping all the despised cardio. ;)

The Battle Plan:

Mondays - grocery shopping and prep veggies for the week. Make one new Paleo recipe a week.

Do laundry and wash workout gear every second day.

Schedule workouts and cardio into my planner.

__________

The distractions are all good ones, but I need to remember that even healthy activities are distractions if they take away from something more important. So far I have parkour classes (yay!!) which eat up a lot of travel time. I have also signed up to learn curling with a friend, am taking two online courses, still working on my Spanish, and getting as much hiking/snowshoeing/gallivanting in as possible this winter when work lets me have a day off.

I still need to figure out a tracking/reward system for this challenge cycle. Any suggestions are welcome. The reward of a new activity worked best in the past, but I think it would overwhelm me at the moment.

I decided on my reward system (to be added to my signature once I figure out how to do the bar thingy).

Every week that I meet my Nutrition goal, I add $20 into the pot towards a set of wireless headphones. This would equal a pretty good pair if I make all five weeks.

Every week that I meet my Exercise goal, I add $20 into my Adventure Fund. This will be where I pull money for fees for any OCRs that I want to sign up for. It is also for the Outdoor Women's Weekend next year; they cover getting a rifle license, emergency auto repair, wildlife tracking, fishing and hunting, etc.

Monday

Today did not start off well but it ended up pretty good.  I had a bluesy morning and took a few hours to get out of bed, so I treated myself to a healthy brunch out (veggie omelette and fruit).  The good food choices managed to last all day.  No groceries or cooking got done today, but it will get done tomorrow - trying out Paleo Crab Cakes for my new recipe of the week.  I almost skipped my gym workout since I was feeling blah still, but I talked myself into going and felt much happier once I was done. This was the first full workout that I managed since my illness two weeks ago, so it is great to be feeling strong again.

I lost ground in a few things, including stepping back a level in my Chin Up Quest... not unexpected after almost 4 weeks off but still not great. I'll still get there but maybe by Christmas instead of by the end of November.

I found Pumpkin Spice Oreos!!! Finally!!

I was very good and only ate two, then took the rest of the box in to work so coworkers can sabotage their diets mwahaha.  They were good enough that I enjoyed using one of my deviations to try them, but not so amazing that I am tempted to eat the whole box.

After hearing that burpees are one of the best ways to train for OCRs I don't resent my burpee tabatas as much. It didn't get done today due to a lingering headache, but there is still plenty of time this week.

They have been seasonally released in the US for a few years, but this is the first time I have encountered them in Canada. Let the contagion spread!

Trick or treat! Oreo's new pumpkin spice flavor will hit shelves across the U.S. in late September, just in time for Halloween

Wow, I've clearly been living in the wrong place to see those! Haha, but I don't know that they could out-do a good double stuffed oreo.

I think there was a whole discussion on the various oreos a few challenges back. The Pumpkin Spice Oreos and the Green Tea Oreos both looked potentially fabulous.

Pizza? I don't think I have ever seen pumpkin spice pizza. That might be it.

Wednesday

Weight lifting day today!  My strength is still not back to pre-trip/illness levels. I am trying to learn to be okay with the two steps forward, one step back progress. Eating was clean.

Thursday

Burpees got done. I threw on a Nature soundtrack so I could pretend that it was doing something useful and discovering new lands outside. Ducking under fallen trees then jumping up to the next rock. My burpees weren't any better but I tolerated them a little more.

Today was my second parkour class, and it was even more fun than the first! We started with rolls (I can now do a proper back roll; still can't do a somersault) then we focused on the wrist transition (muscle-up part) of wall runs. They don't expect us to get good at these until level 3, but it was fun to see how it was supposed to be done. And I really need to work on my chin ups! The whole thing assumes you can get yourself into the chin-up position in the first place haha.

Oh....weird. I guess it's not that much different from a pie, at a very basic level lol :D

Burpees (apparently I can't figure out how to insert multiple quotes...) I sometimes think that's probably the key to "liking" something (especially as horrible as burpees /shudders), is just getting proficient enough at them that you can crank them out and move on.

Sounds like a grand couple of days! I really want to try parkour, I'm sure there is something around here, but I think I'll wait until I get set in my current routine before throwing that in (future goal though!). It sounds like even after 2 classes it's awesome though--thats terrific! Interesting that you are better at backwards rolls, by limited experience has been that people normally find those a lot harder.

Great week! :)

Nature sounds - that's a fantastic way to battle through the suck! Totally swiping that method next time I'm forced to do multiple burpees - engaging my mind sounds like a much better plan than wallowing in how much I hate them.

I apologize for dropping off the map.  Illness, injuries, and my doctor thinking I had mono (spoiler: I don't! :) ) had me overwhelmed and antisocial-like.

I'm not sure how to update my challenge as I missed several workouts. Some of it was severe lack of energy but not actual illness. I think I am going to ignore week 0 and 1 entirely, and count from weeks 2-5.  Sorry to everyone who's thread I haven't kept up with!

Challenge update:

I'm still doing battle with chronic fatigue-like symptoms. It may not be beaten, but I am figuring out how to continue getting strong and live some sort of life around it.  First, my workouts have been split over three sessions instead of two (ABC/ABC instead of ABA/BAB), so each workout only has three compound exercises. This seems a little easier on me, though I still sleep for around 14-18 hours the next day. Second, I have said 'no' to all extra demands (thanks for this week's speech Tank!).  I see how much energy I have on a given day before I decide to do anything, including parkour, going out with friends, or even checking in on this forum.

My life has been reduced to sleep, work, and three one-hour workouts a week. Though this is not ideal long-term, it is enough to keep me going without driving me further into exhaustion. As my energy comes and goes I can add back in the other things that matter in my life (friends, outdoor adventure, cooking, projects) but my mental energy is already improved by giving myself permission to let them go.
