Tourennatrix turns life Upside-Down

Because I might as well be proactive about it?

Hand balancing goals:

Handstand: get used to shifting weight between hands (pirouette bails), get a more vertical line facing towards from the wall (engaging shoulders, core strength). And stop looking at the floor, it's not that interesting. Geeze.

Headstand: coordinate lowering head and walking forward/raising hips at the same time (pike push ups), "float" both legs to elbows together.

Crow: uh, be able to do it for more than a few seconds?

Queda de rins: on the right- continue progressions such as entering from standing (QdR push up) or from esquiva (lunge). On the left- just get better without jacking it up again (PT!)

Actual challenge stuff:

Balance

*Skill-work- at least 1 session/week. Not just kick-ups for funsies (though those are good too) but mindful practice!

*Before any hand balancing practice (at home or in class) I must have done my PT and a good solid wrist warmup. This means getting PT in early!!

Adapt

*Each week write out plans, challenges, speedbumps, etc to be more prepared- (Ties in directly with food planning, but is important elsewhere)

Macro

*Track calories (for data pool)

*Track protein (100g goal)

*Track water

Flexy

*Sun Salutations, preferably first thing in the morning

*Stretch after workout/class

*Yoga- at least 1 session/week

[Life on hard mode.]

Challenges This month:

Early bird: Work at 8am every day. This girl is not a morning person, especially in the fall and winter (and no, going to bed earlier doesn't make much of a difference). I will need to get up at 6:30 or 7 (or earlier) to have time for a shower, sun salutations to loosen up, prepare or set aside breakfast to take to work, and some good old PT if there's time.

Hunter: Super tentative on this, but I've started looking for a part time job a little less passively than before. I feel like I'm being super picky and passing over some places that would definitely hire me because they're desperate, but I really don't want to fill my remaining free time with something I loathe :P

Month of Feasts: the last full week of November is not only Thanksgiving here in the States, but it is also Birthday week. My mom on the 24th, mine on the 25th, and Husband's on the 26th. Unsure what festivities will entail, but hopefully life will be kind enough to allow me to be comfortable enough to have guests and board games and the best of laughter. Side note: I will obviously not be having my Thursday appointment with C on Thanksgiving, but bummer, he's also going to be gone the following week as well.

Intense: Girafa confirmed this last week that it we are having the next capoeira intensive here in town on the weekend of the 11th. I am super excited, and have mixed feelings about having the ability to duck out and go home if I get overwhelmed with people. On the one hand, yay I have an out! On the other hand, it could be so easy to run from it instead of working with it. #overthinkingit IT'S GONNA BE GREAT!

Bonus: During week 1 I get to have my regularly scheduled therapy followed immediately by getting my massage I earned last Wednesday. Sweeet.

Aww, you meant upside down, not actual flips. -.- Have fun with all your November feasts. :)

I can still play around with chibata and "baby parafuso" and tell you all about how much I fail at them (tho really, a self-deprecating video seems in order for that :P ). But at the very least doubling down on my PT and QdR training definitely gets me more primed for more flippy things. They're just a little closer to the ground. ;) I mean... I could also do jump squats a bunch to get more springy, but let's be realistic here.

...

That needs explaining and I we'll start another art challenge in November. Just check the accountabillity groups next week.

Tales of Capoeira:

Astronaut was coming at me with tesoura, like in plank, with legs akimbo, sliding his feet towards me to catch me like scissors and throw me to the ground. I saw it coming and went for my most common and comfortable escape: the au, cartwheeling right over one of his legs. Normally this is a smooth escape and can set me up for a few options of how to respond. However. Astronaut decided it would be a good idea to twitch his leg, the one I was jumping, as though he were launching a surprise kick. As I'm hurling my face and both of my hands to the ground. I startled. I think, in the second or so it took me to hit the ground, both of my hands moved to guard my face, then realized the kick wasn't coming and if I didn't use my hands to catch me, the floor would hurt a lot more than the kick would have. I landed hard on the heels of both of my hands, and somehow my left hip.

I'm pretty sure I'll live ;)

Okay fiiine :P

We were working on esquiva diagonal- an escape that, instead of taking you farther from the attacker, brings you right up close to them. Essentially lunging under the kick, towards the attacker. Then, I would sortof sidestep unter the kick and cabeçada (headbutt) him in his fleshy underbelly. Right about at the belt.

The whole thing is all so very intimate.

Second week in a row where my tuesdays have left a bit to be desired. I didn't get to sleep until after midnight, and was NOT happy about how dark it was when I woke up. Had some pretty messed up dreams too, one dream in particular that wavered between really happy and really creepy in really short intervals.

Super cranky day at work. My dentist is going to give my such a frowny face behind his little mask next week for how much soda and candy I've had this year. It was a birthday food day at work and I just could not get myself to eat my breakfast and I ended up eating a metric fuckton of oreos. I wanted to brush my teeth again like 5 minutes after getting to work. So much sugar. Blech.

After work, friend and I went to the gym and I bossed her around for a bit, but was pretty half-hearted when it came to my round of doing the circuit. True to my word though, over rhe course of about half an hour I did 3 sets of 10 jump squats. My friend was not impressed that I made her do them too ;)

Girafa and S showed up around 8 and we worked on some chapa giratoria, and had a target to shove around which was unexpectedly satisfying. More esquiva diagonal and eventually we moved to cruz. Which, in retrospect, seems like it may have been a bad idea. Cruz is one of the many things we were working on the week my shoulder almost fell off. And my shoulder has been particularly clicky today. And I didn't do my PT before class (ran out of time to include it in the workout.) I definitely wanted to give it a shot to see where I was with it, and the practice didn't seem to anger the shoulder until I finally executed the movement more or less correctly. There wasn't any moment where my shoulder loudly protested or anything, it was just meekly wondering if we could please stop (which makes it REALLY hard to tell when you cross from "healthy challenging" to "now you're just making it worse"). And now it's just feeling off and dumb.

I know it's dumb and not true but I feel so laaaame when I have to tell Girafa and Astronaut that no, I don't feel up to doing [insert thing that mildly upsets shoulder] because (a) its been MONTHS AND MONTHS I "should be strong and healed by now" and (b) since I'm not fully healed, it must be because I'm a wimp, weakling, and/or slacker who doesn't do PT often enough. Lame. Not true. But it's there >_<

I think I'll do PT before bed, just a short one-sided one this time. Just to work the muscles a bit and encourage them to heal up again overnight?

Siiiigh... two more sleeps til Thursday...

I feel this all the time with my knee. It's a thing. A very, very lame not-true thing.

Yeah, same here. But with my ankle that I sprained 4 years ago while jogging. It took forever to heal, and then even when it was healed, I still didn't want to try jogging again because maybe it's not actually healed all the way, plus what if I just end up hurting it again, etc. I just started jogging again, and those thoughts are still hanging around. :/

Current Challenge: Zeroh, stick to the routine!

Straight up pain. Push through discomfort all you want, but the moment you are HURTING, you should stop. Pain is a signal from the body that something is wrong, since the body isn't naturally meant to be in pain. <3

I've been having a similar issue about attendance and performance myself. My performance decreases horribly when I don't eat enough, which in turn makes me skip class. I feel insanely guilty about it, even though I really shouldn't. I suppose I feel so guilty because the matter can easily be remedied and that I feel like my endurance shouldn't be so terrible anymore, but that still doesn't help. Not sure how to go about fixing that.

I'mma jump on the agreement train here. I had a horse flip over and land on me when I was 16 and now have had 2 crushed discs in my back for 8 years. Sometimes I have a hard time working because sitting at a computer makes my back hurt - and some of the things I'm supposed to do while working out scare me (even if I can do them) because they might trigger a negative response.

It is embarrassing admitting being a strong 20 something year old, but not able to help people move or lift things because I'm scared of re-injuring myself.

It gets better, but it is hard mental work.

Yeah, see, the pain didn't actually start until like half an hour or so after we stopped training and I was trying to settle in for the night. During training it was more of a very slowly ramping discomfort. I know I trained too long with the movement, but I don't really know where the cutoff was- 5 minutes in? 15?

Some PT, sleep, and a hot shower later, I can confirm that I am not back to square zero. Pretty sure I'm better than square one. My arm does my bidding and I have not had any issues lifting small every-day objects like my water bottle. It's definitely sore and uncomfortable and I won't be practicing cruz for a bit longer (also, bridge and queda de rins on the left are pushed back again, grrrr) but my arm has *not* fallen off.

Whew.
