Instead of when, how much, etc., I would concentrate on a hunger/fullness scale and any relevant notes about thoughts, feelings, or circumstances related to eating. If I remember correctly Banting says I have to eat when I'm somewhere between "hunger pangs" and "overly-hungry", definitely before "ravenous". And I must not eat more than fills me to somewhere between "just satisfied" and "completely satisfied".
