Success!

Last night I did my shopping on the way home and, while I didn't find any sweet potato chips, I did find some sweet potato chunks which came out basically the same.  So I used them to load my carbs along with a lamb steak, carrots, and sugar snap peas.  I may also have had a bottle of wine as well, because Races Need Carbs.

Before any of that I did the Yin Yoga Stretching video - 40mins of getting my body all nice and aligned again.  I will become a supple bloody leopard if it kills me.

I also did all the foam-rolling, etc. from my checklist too.

This morning I was up at 3:30am for the race so I could get my coffee & breakfast in and give it time to settle.  The race itself was along the public footpath at the Corniche over in West Bay, and it was busy.  Had to pay attention to pick the best route through all the people walking/running/cycling along there, but it was really good to see so many people out!

My race plan was simple - don't go off too quick, then try to hang on at the end when the lack of distance in training would rear its head.

I did go off a bit too quick (plan called for 7:50/mile pace, my first was 7:19, followed by a 7:34 and a 7:41) but it felt at about the right pace.  Plus I was running in a small group so it carried me along nicely.

The route was two out-and-backs along a 2.5km section, and when I hit the turn around for the second time I started suffering.  The heat was getting up by then, plus my longest runs have all only been 4-5 miles, so my legs just don't have the training volume to keep that pace going.  Not to mention running into the wind, although that did help with the heat a bit.  It felt like I was crawling through treacle, but my watch said I was still doing 8:05-8:10/mile pace so feelings can be deceptive.  I used one of my mantras from Amy Clover's Build Your Hero Toolkit class at Camp, plus swearing at myself in between breaths.

After a bit of a sprint-ish finish I crossed the line in 48:16!  I simply wanted to beat my previous time from a fortnight ago of 49:56, with a stretch goal of possibly dipping under 49:00, so this was a helluva result!  Very chuffed with that indeed.  I have celebrated by eating breakfast twice since then, and lunch is coming up soon.

It also informs my next few weeks of training - the next race in this series is in three weeks.  If I want to improve on my time again (my previous PB from a few years back is 39:55, so I know this is definitely possible!) I need to get all my training runs to be at least 6 miles in distance, preferably with a longer one at the weekend.  Still not willing to risk any speedwork, and frankly it's not yet necessary.  Just getting the miles in my legs, remaining uninjured, and shifting the timber will do the trick for now.

Off out to the rugby club for food & drinks this afternoon (both in sensible quantities), and then tomorrow it is Leg Day if they are recovered enough!  If not, I'll do them on Sunday and find some other workout to plug the gap with.

Happy weekend everybody!

Great Job Man!

All your talk of running is making my brain say "A run would be good for us." Now I happen to know... I hate running. A lot. The only reason I run is to get the exercise over with as quick as possible.

tumblr_lm770mEt0p1qjpiqz.jpg

All that being said my girlfriend and I have a 5k fun run toward the end of this month. I should probably put some miles in.

Great run! I always find it interesting...once you get tired in a race, it feels like you are going soooo slow, but even if you "slow down" it only changes the pace by a bit. Gotta keep the mind tough and just hang with it as well as possible. Anyway, I 'm really psyched for you and glad that the calf was doing allright.

Thanks guys!  I was very pleased with that run indeed.

The rest of the weekend was fun too - spent the afternoon & evening at the rugby club with friends.  Saturday I got up and headed to the gym for Leg Day, but unfortunately twanged my back a bit on the second set of deadlifts, so my lower back has been quite tight since then.

It didn't detract from the results of Week 1 though - I hit all my workouts, all my targets, and my eating must have been pretty good overall as I ended up 5lbs lighter for the start of Week 2!  Very pleased I decided to prep the exact same food again; after all, if it ain't broke...

I had booked today off work so it's been nice and quiet - mainly spent playing Skyrim.  I killed my first dragon today as well as a load of other people, some of whom presumably deserved it.  I also did my entire batch cooking and went for a nice easy run this evening - 6M in 50:43 @ 8:23/mile average.  The training runs are definitely started to feel a bit easier again, and my plan for this week is simply to run two more easy 6 milers in the evenings then run hard in the 10k on Saturday.  If that all works out, next week I shall try some 8 milers instead.

My back's still a bit tight this evening so I'll probably give the gym a miss tomorrow - handily, Firefly Fluxx just arrived in the post so I'll be going round a mate's house to play that instead.  Perfect timing!

So on with Week 2!  Hope you all have a good one!

Thanks, me too!  It's a bit better today but still sore, so I'm going to give the gym a miss this evening and go for a walk instead.  That should help matters a bit.

I am still here and still running!

Yesterday was a rest day - back's still playing up, so instead I went for a walk after work to get my steps up for the day.  Yoga and pull-ups/dips are also still off the table, but I did foam roll.  Eating was ok too.  Then I went and played Firefly Fluxx!  It was a good evening.

Today I have also foam-rolled and eaten ok, but I did actually go out running - that does not appear to be affected by my back, which is getting better daily.  I'm think Friday would be a good time for a little test at the gym.

Tonight's run was simple - just another run round the local area.  I'm definitely getting a bit of pace & stamina back though, as this run was basically the same pace as that race I did three weeks ago!  All this consistent training stuff seems to work after all - 6.1M in 49:21 @ 8:00/mile average.  I'll take that; same again on Thursday and then I'll be ready for the race on Saturday.

Tomorrow I've got to go to a Workshop all day and will have to eat their food for lunch, but there usually seems to be healthy options so I just need to choose them.  The trickier bit will be not partaking in the mini-croissants and other snack food they will have in the room with us, so I'll just have to keep looking at my Camp NF wristband as a reminder!

Why do they tempt us with the mini croissants?! I usually target the fruit plate pretty mercilessly at these things.

If you figure out some good strategies for those meeting days, I would love to hear. I could imagine working in some small bits of activity (even just walking up some stairs or something) might help. I'm not sure if bringing my own snacks would actually help...the risk is that then I would end up eating my snacks AND the stupid mini croissant.

Glad you were able to get back running.

Ugh. Mini croissants + bored eating. Bastards. You *can* resist the croissant's cuteness.

Just look at that thing. Laying there. Looking all smug.

Don't take any shit from that smug little bastard. Don't give him what he wants. Let him be cold. On that plate. Alone.

(apparently mini croissants are all male and I've had too much/not enough coffee this morning).

Ok, so the last few days have been a bit rubbish my my challenge's perspective. I ate pizza, I drank too much, and I generally slacked off too much.

There was some success today though! I did a 10k race and it went much better than I expected. I wasn't expecting a good time as it didn't start until 7:00, so the temperature was already getting up. It was 4 laps of a 2.5k loop and frankly by the end of lap 1 I was tempted to quit or just jog round.

But then I saw my Camp NF wristband, and I also thought about another nerd off doing a hardcore GoRuck event right now, and instead decided to #fortify and get it done.

So three more laps of consistent effort, pouring lots of bottles over my head to stay cool, and a sprint finish at the end as well, all saw me cross the line in 47:52 - another 25 secs off last week's time!

Since then I have been absolutely wrecked and mainly been on the sofa. But I have all my plans set for Week 3, my back is better so I'm heading to the gym tomorrow, and I aim to get up to 25miles or running in total for the first time in a very long while. Looking forward to hitting Week 3 hard!

Belated update for yesterday!

I finally hit my first gym session since I twanged my lower back while deadlifting last weekend.  Back & Biceps:

- w/u

- one-arm DB row - 10,10,12: 55lbs for 10,10,8

- assisted pull-ups - machine still broken :(

- lat pulldown - 10,10,12: 110lbs for 10,10,13 - increase weight next time

- back extensions - 10,10,12: 22lbs plate for 10,10,12 - increase weight next time

- DB alternate bicep curl - 10,10,12: 2x25lbs for 10,10,13 - increase weight next time

- EZ-bar curl - 10,10,12: 50lbs for 8,6,5 - just plain ran out of steam on this one

Followed by 15mins on the cross-trainer too.  Later on in the day I also went out for a 3 mile walk to get my steps up for the day.

I got my batch-cooking done too - another week of baked curry chicken & veg for lunch, and beef & egg cups for breakfasts.  I'm having a week off from prepped dinners and cooking omelettes & stir-fries instead, for a bit of a change.

Let's see, what else:

- 1 negative rep pull-up and 1 negative-rep dip done (starting again after my back problems)

- foam-rolling was done on the calves

- I completely forgot to do my Squat Mobility yoga mini-session - oops!

- still no more decluttering yet.  Gonna hit this one hard this week ot catch up a bit.

I think that covers everything.  Tonight I'm having a go at upping my run distance a bit - hoping to get 8 miles in if I don't get too bored by the route!
