Grayspeed gets down to Assassin-ing

This challenge I'll be starting a new job! Which means I'm putting adulting and life stuff on the backburner to focus on settling in at work.

It also means I can focus my entire challenge on fitness!

 

As a celebration of new jobs and a (very welcome) return to a fitness focus, I thought it was time to have a theme again. What better than to pick up where my first ever challenge in this awesome guild left off, and do an Assassin's Creed themed challenge!

To truly earn my place in the Brotherhood I'll need to work on the key aspects on Assassin-ing.

 

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing.

I will improve my climbing strength by reaching Level 4 on the NF Rings muscle up progression. I aim to get to this point by the midpoint of the challenge to be honest. 

UPDATE: I will improve my climbing strength by holding all four sets (of 5 seconds) of Rings Support Holds with perfect form. Perfect form = Palms facing outwards. I'm pretty strong with my hands in a neutral position, but when I turn out my palms the move gets much harder. 

 

Quest 2: Fighting Bad Guys.

I will increase my fighting strength by practicing one element of the NF Rings mobility tutorial every day. 

There are 4 videos to choose from so I'll probably cycle through them day to day.

 

 

Quest 3: Running Away From Bad Guys.

Improve my cardio/sprinting capabilities by cutting 30 seconds off my 2km row time. Thats going from 9:31 down to 9:01. My eventual goal is 6 minutes, but that's some Master Assassin level stuff..

Had my induction and initial training at work today, everyone seems genuinely nice and I think I'll fit in well :)

I also took the plunge on the NF Rings/Handstands course. Right now I'm just interested in the Rings (although I'll probably be using a TRX at the gym for now) course, but when summer rolls around I think I'll start working on handstands.

 

Week 0 - Friday

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing - 3x10 bodyweight rows.

So this fits in perfectly with NF Rings!  As mentioned above, I'll be using a TRX for now. I'm a few levels away from doing exercises that aren't practical on TRX - the TRX at the gym are hung super low and I'm too tall to do something like muscle ups without getting my face stuck in the strap.

I put a suggestion in the suggestion box that maybe suspension trainers could be hung somewhere else, but who knows if it'll change. Not a whole lot of people seem to use them.

 

Quest 2: Fighting Bad Guys - 3x10 parallel dips.

Today was a cardio day but i have dips scheduled for tomorrow.

 

Quest 3: Running Away From Bad Guys - cut 30 seconds off 2km row time.

Didn't row today as all the rowing machines were occupied after I got off the treadmill and I didn't feel like waiting (I was super hungry..)

 

Quest 4/Bonus Quest: Assist The Brotherhood - participate in the mini every week.

Did everything except "searching" last night.

I'm considering tweaking my goals slightly to fit in with NF Rings.

 

Week 0 - Saturday

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing - 3x10 bodyweight rows.

Rows started off well but went south real fast. Probably due to no getting much sleep last night.. Sets of 12/8/55

 

Quest 2: Fighting Bad Guys - 3x10 parallel dips.

10/8/7, so keeping right on my PR.

 

Quest 3: Running Away From Bad Guys - cut 30 seconds off 2km row time.

N/A

Nothing of note happened yesterday apart from carving pumpkins, eating steak, and going to see Doctor Strange.

 

Week 1 - Monday 

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing - 3x10 bodyweight rows.

Tried going at a lower angle today rather than upping reps at the same angle. Got 9/8/7 at around 30 degrees.

 

Quest 2: Fighting Bad Guys - 3x10 parallel dips.

Not so good today - 10/8/6. Probably switching this to a NF Rings related goal anyway.

 

Quest 3: Running Away From Bad Guys - cut 30 seconds off 2km row time.

N/A

I'm hoping to do that this challenge too. What was the limiting factor in reps - arms or core?

I ordered my gymnastics rings! I'll ask the Gym Manager tomorrow if it'll be ok to hang them/where she'd prefer I hang them. Hopefully it won't be a problem, all the other affordable gyms are in the city centre..

Week 1 - Wednesday

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing - Reach NF Rings Level 4 (muscle up module).

Went to the gym straight from work and McGyver-ed the TRX into makeshift rings - this involved flopping the straps up and around the pullup bar so I had separate anchor points, it wasn't super safe but it worked...

Got home to find my rings have arrived! Also decided not to bother asking about rings (mainly because the only gym staff around was with a client). If they don't care about people smashing cable machines around or leaving equipment everywhere (seriously, I've seen a bosu halfway down the stairs before..) I doubt they'll care about some random weirdo hanging rings from the pullup bar.

 

Quest 2: Fighting Bad Guys - NF Rings mobility practice every day.

Did the hamstring flexibility video today.

 

Quest 3: Running Away From Bad Guys - cut 30 seconds off 2km row time.

9:18! Turned off the timer while rowing, I think it helped me focus on the moment a bit more.

Not much questing, just did hip flexor strength mobility work.

Quest 1: Climbing A Thing - Reach NF Rings Level 4 (muscle up module).

I was pretty proud of my calluses. One session on rings has shown just how much tougher my hands need to get.. Holy crap.

Found that support holds are 100% easier on actual rings and I got very close to hitting the completion goals for level 3. This weekend I may actually hit this goal...
