RhiaWolfe Posted October 28, 2016 Report Share Posted October 28, 2016 Alright, I’m starting my first challenge here with Nerd Fitness. I’m new to the site and have never done this, so bear with me. I’ll try to make it interesting. So, after being sealed in the sacred realm for 7 years, Rhia (Link) has gained quite a bit of weight and is in no shape to become the Hero of Time and save Hyrule from the tyranny of Gannondorf. So now it is time for Rhia to gather her courage and head out on her quest to train and get into shape for the safety of the realm. It does no good for the Hero of Time to be late. While Rhia needs her beauty sleep, sleeping in is not acceptable. Every morning she should be on time and ready train! First step is getting out of bed and being ready to face whatever monsters and challenges are in Hyrule! Goal #1: By the end of the challenge, get up out of bed without hitting the snooze button. While Rhia may cut grass for rupees, she must not forget that vegetables are also important. Vegetables, while at first seemingly distasteful, can give Rhia the energy she needs to train her muscles and sword skills to perfection. Goal #2: Eat vegetables with at least 2 meals each week week. Ok, so we’ve got out of bed and had vegetables for energy. Now it’s time to get serious and train. Strength training is no laughing matter. How can Rhia take on the temples and bosses required to free the sages, if she is not strong enough? Training begins here and now! Goal #3: Go to the gym and strength train at least 4 days a week. Thus we begin the Legend of RhiaWolfe in her quest to save Hyrule and bring peace to the land. Will she make it? Can she fulfill her tasks as necessary to reach her goals? RhiaWolfe Posted October 31, 2016 Author Report Share Posted October 31, 2016 Day 1 (technically Day 2, but I started today) Goal 1 Progress: This morning, while not late for work, I did hit the snooze button twice. There's something that feels so good about hitting that snooze button and falling right back asleep. I know it leaves me crankier in the morning, but it's a bad habit I've developed. When I was in college, I broke myself of hitting the snooze button. I got up and had so much more time in the morning. I know hitting the snooze doesn't give me any more restful sleep, but first thing in the morning I don't necessarily have the most willpower in the world. By the end of the week, I don't want to hit the snooze any more than once. Gotta be up and get ready to save Hyrule! Goal 2 Progress: I ended up making chicken tacos last night to eat throughout the week. I don't know if you'd count tomatoes as a vegetable since technically they are a fruit. I used to hate tomatoes though and now I'm making sure to include them in my tacos. I plan on having an additional vegetables in the form of carrots with lunches through the week. I forgot to pack those today. Need to get that nutrition and energy to take on they Hyrule Field monsters! Goal 3 Progress: I didn't go to the gym yesterday, so I'm going today. Yesterday I was tired, feeling lazy, and had to force myself to get up to go to the grocery store and cook dinner. I did it though! So I didn't go out to eat or try to cheat with something processed and less healthy, so that's a plus. I have brought my work out stuff with me to work today and will head over right after work. I'll update everyone tomorrow with today's progress. Not a lot of progress so far, but it is the beginning of the week. I may or may not update this every day during the challenge, but I will definitely keep you guys updated! I don't hit the snooze button anymore... but I use my phone as my alarm and I set about 6 different alarms to go off at different times... so technically I've just built my snooze button into my phone's alarm. I know a lot of people here swear by once a week meal prep, but I like to walk to the grocery store a few times a week and pick up fresh veggies for a stir fry. It's exercise, plus I don't have to eat the same thing every day. So, last night I cooked some taco meat and chopped up a bunch of vegetables so I can just eat leftovers the rest of the week. I'm new to fitness and getting healthy, so I'm working hard at trying to manage my time. I work full time, go to school full time, and am now trying to get in 4-5 hour long gym sessions a week! lol. Any little bit of a time saver is worth it to me. There are times that I may go to the store twice in one week to get something fresh, like bananas. I find that bananas don't last long enough for me. If I get tired of my leftovers during the week and I'm feeling ambitious, I may look up a new recipe to try and go during the week to get the stuff at the store. There's also not a grocery store within walking distance, which kinda sucks. I don't live in a nice area, so honestly, I don't like to walk around by myself. I've made a lot of things habit (like batch meal prep). My challenge this week really isn't too different from what I'm currently doing. The only part of the challenge that is significantly different is the hitting of the snooze button. I wont' see my trainer for another two weeks. Firm in my resolve, I decided to just drop the weight a bit (went from 10lbs to 8lb weights) and try to get through the reps. Last week I did my last workout like that. I'm going to try that the rest of this week and see how it goes. Last week it worked pretty well with resting about 60 seconds between sets. The bodyweight stuff was still hard and was the only time I felt sick, because that's not something I can really change. We'll see how this week goes! If you eventually decide you're better off without a trainer, there are some good beginner lifting or running programs you can try on a smart phone, and the nerds around here can help you check/improve your form. Living someplace walkable and bikeable (and then walking and biking) does make fitness easier for me. As does working full time while NOT being a full time student. I'm seriously impressed by people like you, who are balancing so much more and still making improvements. There are times that I just want to quit something and rest... but then I remind myself how important each thing is to me. I've always been overweight and I have never been physically healthy. I've decided that it's time to change that. No ifs ands or buts about it. I'm going to do it one step at a time no matter what. If I am healthier, I'll have the energy to do all the stuff I want/need to do! I am interested in quick recipes, I just don't do it as a habit. I love a quick stir fry. I do sandwiches with a lot of veggies. I'll make tuna salad... I'll do a lot of little things during the week if I don't have time to do much else. Also sometimes to mix it up, I'll bake chicken and have chicken and broccoli one night, then the next night have a chicken salad with the leftover chicken. Generally I do meal prep though. But best of luck with the trainer so long as they're helpful for you. I'm kinda booked with him for at least a year. Signed a year contract. I'm not shy at asking him for what I need. So, for example, we first went over macros and nutrition, and I told him I wasn't interested in that. I also wasn't interested in him just putting me through a random work out every two weeks. I specifically want to learn how to work out safely. I had him basically just walk me through what my workout was each week so I knew what I was doing and could do it safely. He did end up saying it would be ok for me to lower my reps... but I'm stubborn. There's a couple set meals we'll do where you can get veggies, meat and flavor in 10 mins or so. Usually it means chicken, fish, or ground turkey that gets fried up in a pan as the longest cooking piece of the meal, then either a quickie marinara in a sauce pan, or a curry paste / your flavor mix of choice (Italian, Mexican, Chinese) in with the meat while you nuke frozen veggies or a spaghetti squash. Depending on your attitude towards fat or grains, add in sour cream / cheese or serve it over rice / flatbread. It'll never win awards but you can usually get a good macro balance in your mouth, and hot, within 15 minutes of coming home after work. Quote Level 34 [Yorkie Packmaster] Link to comment

I plan on going to the gym again today, so I'm doing good on that front! I had tomatoes again with my chicken tacos. A healthy portion of tomatoes, actually. So that's two vegetables for the week! However... I still hit the snooze button... even though I got to sleep in for an hour. This is really one of the hardest things for me to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help accomplish this one? I'm going to try again tomorrow. Going to focus on not hitting the snooze so many times. Chicken, lettuce, tomatos, olives, and salsa wrapped in a corn tortilla. Today I did a little better than the day before with that snooze button. I'll post an update shortly.
