Broba Fett goes it alone

Well... Not actually alone.  Hoping to have you all with me at least.  I've just left my CF box is all.

It's been over a month since I've had a thread.  In that time my fiancee and I both had injuries and decided together to leave our gym for various reasons, biggest of which was financial.  Saving $185/mo by switching to a Gold's Gym Express with nearly all the same equipment as the box.  The only thing we'll be missing is the classes, which is a big thing but I think we can manage it.

We are going to be doing Starting Strength Phase 2 three times per week:

Day A Day B
Squat 5 reps x 3 sets Squat 5 reps x 3 sets
Bench Press 5 reps x 3 sets OHP 5 reps x 3 sets
Deadlift 5 reps x 1 set Power Clean 3 reps x 5 sets

I've been working on re-learning my squat, which had evolved into a "Squat, bend at the waist, good morning, stand up" that was going to get me seriously hurt:

New PR: 325. Form sucks, I know. Still working on not doing a good morning at the bottom. #bemorebestrong #weightlossjourney #workinprogress #transformation

Thus, I think a basic program like Starting Strength will allow me to reset and (hopefully) get back up in weight relatively quickly.  It will also allow me to keep my presses, cleans, and deads progressing regularly.  I've also tweaked my shoulder this past month causing me to lose time (and thus think about how much money I was paying to NOT go to the gym) so hopefully these will keep the weights much lower with slightly higher volume than the programming we were doing that had heavy doubles, singles, and PRs every few weeks.

This will be followed each day by a random conditioning WOD chosen from a WOD generator app I found.

We also have a bunch of strongman buddies that do event practice on Sunday mornings so we will likely be jumping in on those once in awhile.  Nothing like jumping in on a workout with a 148lb pro strongwoman and seeing if you can keep up.

Nutritionally I did some reading up on some intermittent fasting, specifically the 5:2 diet.  I started it last week and I think it may be exactly what I need this time of year to allow some flexibility for the family get-togethers I have literally every weekend (and then some).

Personally (LUYL) I've got a few goals:

  1. I'm now 22k words into an urban fantasy novel and I need to keep myself writing.  I'm going to try to write for 15 minutes every day.  If I do that sometimes I'll get a couple hundred words and stop and sometimes I'll get into a zone and crank out a thousand words in short order.  Trick is just to make myself start.
  2. I need to give myself a project.  Could be welding my busted forge back together and banging away on some steel.  Could be putting together a chess board or some other woodworking project.  Could be ordering a carving knife and trying to carve something.  Not really sure but it's been months since I made something with my hands and my brain works better when I challenge it in that way.
  3. I need to wire up license plate lights for my truck.  I have been just asking to get pulled over driving it without them for the past few weeks. I have the lights, I just need to get them on there.  May require help from someone more electronically inclined but that shouldn't be hard to find.
  4. I test for a 911 dispatcher job on Monday.  Assuming it goes well I need to sit down with the fiancee and have a major Pro/Con discussion and see if it is something that works for us right now.

I don't anticipate the working out to be a problem.  I'm ready to be back in the gym.  Likewise, I've already been on this new diet for over a week and don't anticipate any big issues there.  So this challenge will largely be recaps of my gym sessions, chronicles of any struggles I may have with foods, and (hopefully) some cool writeups of a couple projects I get done/possibly some of the fiction if anyone would like to read.

I've had the same issue.  I've found that if I follow through the Tapatalk app it will keep sending me notifications even after the forums stop.  Not sure if you use that or not but may be worth a look.

Addressing depth on squats a yuuuge step. I'm often guilty of power curtsies and I've been grinding depth for the last year. Wells done.

Just between you and me, I hate squats.  Absolutely hate them.  I never had sciatica until I screwed up a squat almost 3 years ago and messed up my lower back.  Then I went to my most recent gym I was getting my ass down and back up and had decent weight on my shoulders but it wasn't pretty, as evidenced by that video.

Hopefully this will be the time that I do it correctly from the ground up.   I've been practicing them with my face against the wall to keep myself from drifting forward so the plan will be to continue doing that until the weight is heavy enough that I can't clean and press it onto my shoulders.  Then I'll have to figure out a way to emulate a wall in/near a rack.  I'm thinking stacked plyo boxes maybe?  I'm definitely open to suggestions if anyone has one.

*nods*  Good to have you both aboard.

Fitness:

Been out of the gym 2 full weeks now and I'm getting twitchy.  I think shoulder is good to go now but we won't be able to get our new gym membership till payday Friday.  We decided we are going to try to use this week to figure out our working 5RM with the weights in our basement.  We have a total of  295lbs in old weights including a rusty old bar and a bench down there.  We should be able to figure out our working weights for all of the lifts except OHP (being tall has it's disadvantages) and deads for me.  I believe I've done sets of five at 350-365 or so.  I'll get some volume in whatever night she figures out hers.  I'll also be going straight into my 5x3s on squats this week since I'm starting with the bar.

Nutrition:

Fast days are Tues/Thurs this week.  Works out well as I'm in a excel training all day tomorrow and will hopefully be too busy to be hungry.

LUYL:

Story is not actually Dino-rotica.  It's an urban fantasy involving modern day paladins, a secret society of mages, a pack of werewolves, and a tribe of inter-dimensional orks.  Also throw the seven demon princes of Hell in there somewhere as well.  I'm trying to write it from 4 separate points of view, kind of like how Robert Jordan did the Wheel of Time books.  The current plan is to write each protagonist's origin and then they will all converge.  I'm pretty much done with the paladin origin and about halfway done with the mage.

I have that 911 dispatcher test at 2pm today and pretty much nothing else going on as it's my day off so I'm planning on getting a good amount of writing done.  Wish me luck!

Hoping it won't hold me up too much. Pretty glad atm that I'm starting light with squats.

For squats, have you tried training front squats as an accessory? It'd def help with keeping an erect trunk. And speaking of erect trunks, maybe your dino-yiff book could include a touching scene where the hapless Eoraptor protagonist realizes his e-reptile dysfunctions are because he's been using casual sex and carbon dating (like speed dating but with more beta particle emission) to cover up his deep anxiety issues and sense of abandonment. Also a fear of meteors.

Feel free to list me as a collaborating author and PM me for an address when it's time to mail my share of the royalties.

I feel like there is also a great opportunity to discuss gender issues as well.  Dinosaurs that are genetically engineered to all be female, regardless of how they feel inside, discovering the meaning of love with each other and their makers?  Yahtzee.

Jk, I don't understand half of what you said.  My writing sophistication level is closer to  "He shot the bad guy.  He shot him real good-like.  The magic man went FWOOSH and there was fires.  Big fires."

I did!  Only 15-20 mins each day but this morning I knocked out a full 1100 words between posting here and doing some housework.  Just under 25k overall now.   Not really sure what I'm fully shooting for as I've read anywhere between 50k and 100k for a first novel.  I think if I go through all 4 origins and then bring them together to finish out the story I'll likely be past 100k.  Not sure what to do there so I'm just gonna keep writing till the story is done and then figure it out.

Going to go get ready for my test and then hopefully get some more words in this afternoon.
