Today I plan to slip out unnoticed and meet her at the mall next to my workplace in order to watch Rogue One. It's workout and LaserTag after that, then Saturday morning I'm flying to my hometown to spend the weekend visiting the family and trying to deal with their mess. Expecting my next update to be at the start of next week.

Good luck with family drama Commander. I'll be sending all the good influence I can your way.

Don't tell the voices in your head but I'll be praying as well ;)

Not sure how much I can comment about Rogue One without anything classifying as a spoiler, but I'll try regardless and put it under a spoiler tag just to be extra safe.

Spoiler

So I loved it. New faces and characters without much regard for the Skywalker family, plus near-zero lightsabers because honestly, it was so overdone it felt like every person in the galaxy and their mother owned a lightsaber. For me, Rogue One had two very important contributions to make to the whole Star Wars franchise. One, it gave us a perspective of the common people living under the oppressive boot of the Empire, whereas in the past it was all simply implied and two, it restored much of the mystery and grandeur to a lot of iconic SW things: mirroring the way the Empire was pictured, the Rebellion felt justified and desperate and heroic. The Death Star felt like a really important thing, a powerful, deadly and intimidating weapon instead of the joke it had been reduced to by blowing it up and rebuilding it just to have it blown up again. And then there's Vader. After everything he's been through, from the "fall" in the old movies to being portrayed the way he was in the new trilogy, Vader finally is shown once more as the unstoppable badguy he originally was created to be. That final scene is just... ugh!

LaserTag was fun, plenty of running around and major kudos to the owners for blasting Amon Amarth through the entire match, even if it made me want to drop the gun and grab a sword or axe. Half my team found out AFTER the match that friendly fire was on, but still we somehow won it.

15622047_1802033700036915_64233340747615

Despite past tensions, I had to be the one to bring up the subject to the family during my visit and start the discussion. On another occasion, I'd say we reached a satisfactory conclusion, but we've been through that too many times lately and I just can't believe it until I see it. Trust ain't easy to rebuild once it's been wrecked.

On more mundane matters, of course my eating wasn't that good during the weekend but considering it's holidays, I'm managing pretty well, especially as far as the sweet stuff is concerned. Not that happy about my workouts either, just Monday's running WOD and a lot of run and gun during the lasertag match, but not much besides that. Aiming for a strong comeback this week, it's Crossfit Games Week!

100% agree with your Rogue One review, I loved it! This is what Star Wars is supposed to be! I started a spoiler discussion thread if you want to openly discuss anything.

Is it me, or does the picture behind your lazer tag team look like a freaky looking Buffy the vampire slayer?

WHAT CHALLENGE WEEK? WHAT WERE MY GOALS AGAIN?

Nutrition: Bouncing back from the weekend slip at the family and pretty satisfied with the way I'm handling the holiday treats. Of course, the lack of a stricter regime is showing in my workouts. Remember, nutrition is the base on which everything else is built. With my grand new plan for 2017 and the Open coming up in February, I'm giving myself leeway until my nameday on Jan. 7th, then I'm pretty confident I can get in line.

Workouts: Big comeback with 2 CF Games workouts on Monday and Tuesday, scaled versions of the Final events from the 2009 and 2010 Games respectively. Details in my Battle Log and if you're real curious, you can always look up the actual WODs and watch videos of the finals. 2009 features Mikko Salo and plenty of SISU, which made me think of @ShadowLion. We miss you, sister.

Dissertation: No progress at all here, but after successfully completing my exams last night, I have a few evenings free which I'm hoping to utilize for this goal.

Fun and Creativity: Keeping up with my Play by Post RPGs and planning the next tabletop Warhammer RPG session, which is tricky during the holidays and most likely will take place on Jan. 6th. Still got a few wrestling shows to post about on my Dynasty. Mainly keeping these for the boring days at work which frankly haven't been a lot lately, so I'm not stressing about falling behind on this goal.

Family: Gave the update on this, they seem to be making some moves to remedy the situation but trust is hard to re-establish and it will take time.

2017 Roadmap: Done and I'm really excited about it. I should probably print it out and put it on my wall someplace.

Big Magic: "Just because we're silent doesn't mean we're gone. Much of this challenge theme or whatever you want to call it has been integrated on a project that puts the 2017 Roadmap into action. There will be narrative."

It would be a lie to say that nutrition has been ideal given the time of the year, but frankly it's a lot better than similar times in the past. After last year's birthday party, I wasn't feeling the need for something like that again, so I took out the SRLF for dinner at a pretty amazing restaurant. Making arrangements to co-organize something with two other friends in January, it's my nameday on Jan 7th and they have their birthdays around those days so we're thinking economies of scale, since a lot of the guests are common anyway. Christmas lunch at the SRLF's place was delicious and I didn't go overboard, although they presented me with two birthday cakes afterwards, just because I hadn't blown any candles the night before. Everything else since that has been ok and holiday treat consumption is kept at a satisfactory level.

Haven't been to the box since my birthday, I'll admit I'm prioritizing self care and mental health over that. Will be starting my new challenge/battle log/whatever after my nameday though, so it'll be a tight regiment going into the CF Open.

Doesn't look like I'll be making any progress with my dissertation by the end of the year, but at least I got paid by my professor. That and a birthday/holiday gift from the parents went into buying two tabletop games, Dungeon Fighter (I call it a dungeon curling game, since the basic idea is scoring hits based on where dice land on a big target on the table) and Dungeon Saga (closest thing to Hero Quest/Warhammer Quest I could find). I'm also waiting for a major tax return to land in my account, so besides tabletop expenses, I'm saving some money for a new bed&mattress, plus perhaps a little headstart on my savings quest to purchase a motorcycle within 2017.

Speaking of tabletop games and self care, Play by post games are advancing and I've been able to both play and post much about my Total Extreme Wrestling Dynasty.

Good job staying on top of things during the holidays. I look forward to watching you crush the open, especially now that you are at Pireaus and don't have to put up with all the nonsense from the old box.

Good point, the Open will be a driving force for me in the early months of the New Year and having @Endor around for an "informal PvP" really helps me stay focused. Hoping @Rurik Harrgath sticks around for that too, his royal beardness can't skip it this year after beating Rory McKernan!

Before grabbing my games, I looked into the revamped Warhammer Quest but price aside, it's so shiny and laser-colorful it feels like some J-RPG and not the gritty ol' thing it's always been. Also, WTF are those characters/classes? Also checked another Warhammer tabletop game that's around, don't recall the name, but the board and miniatures were replaced by tokens and cards, to the point where it was mostly a card game. NOPE.

As a kid, the 40K equivalent to Hero Quest (even if we didn't know at the time) was Space Crusade and I have great memories of both. Besides not being really into 40K, especially all things Imperium of Man, I skipped that Assassin game and the amazing revamp of Space Hulk because the 40K "feel" is harder to get across to new/casual players, plus I also wanted a game's miniatures to double as minis for my tabletop RPGs B)

More info about next year's changes is coming in and I'm still digesting this year's changes. Won't lie, I'm at the grognard camp that wants things to go back to the 6 Week Challenge format, but as a Ranger I'll adapt and overcome because these are my goals, my challenges and I'll set em up as I like. Goals are hammered out, as is most of the theme/mechanics/narrative, still working on the format. Might do an extended 3 month challenge from Jan 7th to the end of the Open in late March.
