EricMN's Jedi Training - Return of the Blue Milk Special

EricMN

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I wanted to say something about Rogue One, but, who needs to do that? I'm going on opening day.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Instead, because my challenge goals are revisiting and continuing What Works, I'm going back to something awesome.

d5a71e08f733eab007ceca6b612f5b2f.jpg

Work it.

Main Goal

I'm going to Blue Mountain, Ontario, for the 2017 OCR World Championships. Anyone who does three or more races in a single year qualifies to race Journeyman. I could register right now. I want to qualify as an Age Group competitor, meaning I want to earn my spot in competition.

OCRWC16_1000Podiums_PR-750x330.png

Good Lord, the medal porn. I hope these things continue to look this awesome.

To this end, I have to Get Faster and Stay Strong. And in order to do these things, I have to Stick With What I Know Works.

Goal: Macros

2010-02-12-bms128.jpg

Never be Porkins.

1750-2250 calories per day
125-150 grams protein
35+ grams fiber
<2800 grams sodium

Ideally, it's going to be lightest on rest days and heaviest on days where I lift. This is a work in progress. As long as my averages are within my goal range, this is a success for this challenge.

Everything gets tracked and reported here.

Goal: Strength Training

2013-04-22-SOTE-011.jpg

Dash Rendar, the double-breasted turkey of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Weekly Schedule:
Crossfit-style class Monday
Heavy lifting Tuesday, Thursday
HIIT Friday
Boot camp Saturday

During Week 1 of this challenge because I'll be racing in Florida, and will be dropping my Thursday, Friday and Saturday sessions. Otherwise, everything gets tracked and reported here.

Goal: Run, Dammit

2012-01-09-TESB-082.jpg

I wonder if having a puppet master would make me run more consistently.
I have a half-marathon training plan that I paid for, and a running coach who has agreed to track my progress and keep me moving forward. Use these resources. Follow the plan.

I am schedule to run four days per week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and one day per weekend. The Plan says Saturday but also says I can run Sunday instead. My GF and I have agreed to run every Sunday after I finish teaching class at the gym. We're going to keep each other accountable and start working toward our goals.

kessel-run-l1.gif

My measurable goal: 10k in under an hour. Far more achievable than doing the Kessel Run in under 12 Parsecs.

As I mentioned, I will be guiding my GF through the swamp in Florida at the end of Week 1 to complete the Jacksonville Spartan Super, which will complete my Fifth Spartan Trifecta for 2016. I don't want to downplay this as "no big thing", because if it weren't a "big thing" people like me wouldn't train for them and judge their fitness by them. It is a big deal. One Spartan Race is a Big Deal. One Trifecta is a huge deal. Five Trifectas is a huge deal.

I'm proud of what I've done this year, and I understand what I need to do to get where I want to go.

14566400_10105685861305212_5195355366891

Specifically, standing in this picture.

Finally, I will continue to preach Peace, Love and Understanding, until I feel that this world no longer needs it. I stay far too silent on far too many things in the name of not rocking boats. I won't speak politics or whatnot here in the Jedi Temple, but I will continue my mantra, because this world is an awesome place, and it gets better every time we remember to make it that way.

Peace, Love and Understanding, friends.

Is it bad that I think the finisher medals are better than any of the place medals? The matte black and green just looks so sick.

If you were really gonna Star Wars out, instead of 10k in under an hour, your goal would be 10k in under 9k.

Following along again, I grinned happliy upon seeing the return of Blue-Milk to your challenge.

I agree, the black is the nicest one of the lot.

Where you go?

Zero week. Sorry, my friend, it's a thing for me.

Zero Week Is Over

ROTJ-259a.jpg

Nope, time's up, Admiral Trappy Pants. Time to concentrate all power on moving forward.

I expected fallout from the back-to-back 10K road runs at the end of the last challenge, and I was not disappointed. My ankles were beat to hell and everything in the kinetic chain from there to my lower back was unhappy with my life choices. I spent two days doing a crap-ton of foam rolling, static stretching, and mobility exercises.

My whole schedule was out of whack. I missed a significant portion of my lifting session on Tuesday due to sitting in traffic. When I got to the gym, Traci told me to get over myself and get under a bar. I'm almost back to where I was a year and a half ago on the bench, which is nice, considering that ten months ago my shoulder was so screwed up I could barely lift the bar over my head.

There was bad news, though. My Monday Crossfit classes have been cancelled due to ongoing lack of interest - basically, I was the only person left signing up for them. It is being replaced with a HIIT and Core combo, which would be awesome, but doesn't necessarily align with my goals. I am now in a quandary. I have options:

  • Replace it with the Monday Boot Camp class
  • Head down the street to the local CF Box and do their WOD on Mondays
  • Write my own WOD and go to a big-box gym and get it done
  • Whine like a little bitch because changing my schedule messes with my OCD and just do nothing

2012-07-27-TESB-114.jpg

Ignore the open date in my week? Probably not.

Tonight I'm going to head to Boot Camp with an open mind. Boot Camp is where I got my start in fitness. It helped me develop strength endurance, and that's my biggest weakness right now. That and speed. And I'm working on speed.

I had to hang out at home this weekend and watched via social media as some of my NSS teammates went to Atlanta this weekend and froze their respective bootys off while destroying the course and qualifying for OCRWC:

NSS-Atlanta.jpg

Pictured: pure, unadulterated Jedi Master jealousy.

So, yeah, they both qualified. Bill has pretty solid beard game, too. And now, with me heading to Florida this weekend to finish out my 2016 goals, do you know how badly I want to ditch my GF - who will be completing her very first Spartan Trifecta - and run the competitive wave, mash the pedal to the floor, and try to qualify RIGHT NOW? Really, really badly. I won't do it. First, there's no guarantee I would complete the course before she started and I would need to finish, register again, start, and either catch up to her or make her wait for me to start, and who knows how long that would take. That's just a douche move. Second, it might be a good idea to at least have two fully-healthy ankles before I decide to try to floor it. Also, "don't be a douche" really doesn't need a "secondly" anyway. I need to chill and stick to my plan.

2012-04-16-TESB-095.jpg

Patience, or this won't be the only Jedi Master requiring medical attention.

So there we are. Challenge underway.

Welcome back. You are wise to stick with your original plan. Next year needs to be about racing enough to stay in shape, but not so much you damage yourself.

Balance, perhaps, would be a good watchword for 2017.

I like the Star Wars theme! I'm excited about Rogue One. While Star Wars isn't my biggest fandom, it has a place in my heart.

Definitely sounds like a good way to end the year. Continue with what you know and solidify those habits and the work you've been doing. Maybe change things up a little in the new year! Good luck!

Monday

ROTJ-082b.jpg

Welp. The best laid plans and all. I wound up ending the day with a head cold and a minor fever. The head cold has persisted but the minor fever is gone today. Still, not optimal, since I am boarding a plane in just over 48 hours. I'm sure I'm being punished for whining about wanting to go run this weekend without my GF.

2011-10-03-TESB-057.jpg

*sad trombone*

So, nothing got done fitness-wise. I got plenty of rest and tried not to drown while sleeping, with mixed results. Today I'm going to see what I can tolerate; I'm scheduled to run at lunch and then lift this afternoon. If I'm feeling sketchy at all, I'll lift, but I will go light and rep out. Injuring myself because I'm sick would just be dumb.

Managed to NAIL my macros. I want to go light when it's a rest day, scheduled or not.

Goal: Macros
1516/1750 kCal
123/125g Protein
33/35g Fiber
2837/2800mG Sodium

Goal: Strength Training

Nada. Being under the weather sucks.

Goal: Run, Dammit

Scheduled rest day, so no, but I didn't miss anything, either.

Today is going to be a better day.

Weekend News Burst

I finished 2015 injured and disheartened. I went to South Carolina to complete the Carolina Beast and finish my 3rd Trifecta of the year. I wound up sick as hell on race morning and missed the race, and finished the year one piece short of that 3x Trifecta.

pie_shaped_hole.jpg

A visual reminder of a goal unfulfilled.

This year I landed my 3x 2016 trifecta at Killington, Spartan Race's Mecca. I competed on two injured ankles and it took me over 10 hours. It was the most brutal thing I've ever experienced. Everything since has been "off-season training."

Including this past weekend. I fought off a massive head cold and guided my GF through the course at the Jacksonville/Palm Coast Spartan Super.

That's a wrap.
