The guards spotted me. Time to improvise. RUN!

I have some definite ideas about what I want my workouts to be like in the coming year, but this month is going to be a bit chaotic (so say we all, right?). My work gym will close for the holidays on challenge week 3, and we’ll be traveling weeks 3-4.

The big themes are:

  • Don’t lose the good momentum from the past couple of months.
  • Keep the fitness routine going despite end-of-the month travel and closed gyms.
  • Be flexible and keep the tools of the trade handy. (Travel with some portable exercise gear. Use the home gym. When all else fails, I have some no-equipment workouts in my thief's kit.)

Fitness:

  • Work out 4x/week.
  • Ideally this is 2 runs/cardio and 2 bodyweight workouts or kickboxing classes, but over the holidays anything counts: a run, a class, a solo workout. In January I'll settle back into a more concrete schedule. Substitutions permitted.
  • Pull-ups 4x/week. I'm presently doing 3 sets of 3 parallel grip pullups. Let's see if I can level that up this month.

Diet:

  • Maximum two drinks at a sitting. (The clock resets after a couple of hours and a meal. This is likely to come up once or twice while traveling; not so much at home lately but I slip up while on vacation.)
  • "Eat like an assassin, not an asshole" (h/t @Asa Pond). Don't eat two completely indulgent meals in a row.

Life:

  • Finish the book. Work on the book during every work day, just a little bit, until it’s done. I should be done by week 3. DONE.
  • Meditate daily.

Week 3 and 4 are going to have a lot of driving days. I'm going to have to plan carefully to keep to the workout goal.

  • A food goal to be named later. I can’t come up with anything better than “eat sensibly on vacation” right now, but I want something quantifiable and trackable. Suggestions?

One of the Academy things is to order a glass of water when going out to eat (and drink it, I presume), so maybe that can be a simple thing to check off during your travels?

Back and following!

Welcome back!

Just came from tonight's kettlebell class. INTENSE and makes me feel like a weakling.

Oh! I forgot to add pull-ups to my challenge this month. This is a note to myself to do that tomorrow.

Despite my love of all things sneaky, and stealth games, I've never played a Metal Snake Box Gear Fellow game. I know, it's weird.

You mean I can't just order water, not drink it, and then be successful?

OHHHHH That's what I've been doing so wrong!

(The jokes are weak in me this week.)

So, today needs to be a cardio day to keep my routine going.

My legs and my fine, fine assassin booty are still aching from Wednesday night's kettlebell class. And tomorrow is kickboxing.

So I need to decide this afternoon whether I want to try elliptical or rowing.

I'm upping my pull-ups routine from 3x/week to 4x/week for this challenge (which I'm starting Monday). We'll see how that goes. It means I have to remember my portable pull-up bar when I leave town.

I'm pleased to report that after only a few weeks of work, pull-ups are noticeably easier and my form is improving. The progress is gratifying and I will keep this going for the foreseeable future.

I need a pullup bar, argh! I can't just get your gains through osmosis!

MAYBE YOU'RE JUST NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH

I have a couple of pullup bars, both from Amazon. One's a portable one that you can use in most doorways (except mine, because my house is weird and old and every single fixture is slightly non-standard), and a permanent one that I mounted above the door in our laundry room. Neither were expensive -- I think the portable one was 20 bucks or so, and the permanent one might have been about 40.
