There's no probably about it. They definitely don't lift. Though my immediate boss has talked about wanting to get back to that (he used to years ago).

BUT STILL. EMOTIONAL BRAIN DOESN'T CARE WHAT LOGIC BRAIN SAYS.

Guess who is killing this "LIFE" goal shit?

Hint.

It's me.

Last night I bought my flights for the holidays so see family and nerds, so that piece is done (BOSTON AREA NERDS I WILL BE THERE FOR A WEEK AND A HALF AND YOU WILL NEED TO PUT UP WITH ME AND MY EXCEPTIONALNESS).

Then this morning I made that Dr. appointment for Monday.

BAM!

Oh and last night I spent some relaxing time working on a scarf I started last year then stopped working on because warm weather happened. It's going to take forever, but when it is done it will be glorious. This is my first knitting project so having been away from it for months I was concerned about re-learning to knit, but muscle memory is a wonderful thing. I watched about 30 seconds of youtube videos before my fingers were right back at it doing what they needed to do without my conscious effort. Huzzah!

No but really. I'm making this. It's going to be spectacular.

Guys. Nerds. You guys.

NO BUT SERIOUSLY, YOU GUYS.

This week is out to destroy me.

After all those DOMS (my hamstrings are still displeased with me) I was SO EXCITED for the past SEVERAL DAYS that today I would be back in the gym and get to do squats and WON'T THAT BE GREAT AND AWESOME BECAUSE SQUATS. I was nervous about it when I woke up because my hamstrings, but I agreed that I'll be happy to be squatting and if that is just the bar again for a bunch until my hamstrings warm up to the idea of moving again, then so be it. So I got out of bed at 4:45am. I got changed even though it was cold. I got all my layers on and was all bundled up because my phone was all "hey! It's -2F out there just FYI". Grabbed my bag, marched out to the car, pleased at my level of bundling because it didn't feel nearly as cold as I knew it to be. Got in the car.

And my car wouldn't start because my old battery couldn't handle the cold. All that excitement. All that bundling and warmth and discipline to get up and do this shit despite the weather being so damn cold. And it was ALL FOR NAUGHT. I mean sure now my car has a new battery and therefore should be able to start so I should be good for a long while yet, but I WANTED TO DO MY SQUATS, DAMNIT! And sure I can drag my butt there tonight instead, but if you recall from Monday's whining, there are far too many people at the gym after work and I am far too impatient to deal with waiting. I mean, I'll probably go. But I was so excited about a *morning* workout and getting back into that routine.

Why do I keep having to come to an abrupt halt?! THE. WORST.

*flails dramatically*

Ugh , sorry. You still get points for getting up and being ready to go though. If you don't think you want to go to the gym tonight, what about a BW workout instead at home?

Knowing myself, I have a FAR better chance of actually doing the workout if it's not just bodyweight. While I understand that bodyweight is totally legitimate and hard work, I find that I feel like I didn't really *do* anything. Sometimes that is fine if the bodyweight I'm doing is yoga since I tend to do that when I feel like I could use a good stretch, but when I'm antsy and over-excited about working out it just feels like disappointment. Basically assuming no further car troubles, I'm going to have to drag my butt to the gym later and see what I can pull out for a workout depending on equipment availability. And maybe be sure to bring my headphones so I can do everything in my power to pretend all those other people aren't there.

That's EXACTLY HOW I FELT LIVING IT. Like really. Kind of in a stupor of "is this really happening? This is really happening. One more thing. Huh. But is it really? Yep. Checked again. Still real. Not sleeping. Poop."

Time for a much better update than yesterday. You ready?

1. MY CAR STARTS UP LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO NOW! Sure it's a pain that I had ONE MORE THING wrong with my car, but given how much better it sounds starting now than it has for a while, the frigid temps were really just the straw that broke the camel's back and the battery was on its way out for a while now.

2. I WENT TO THE GYM LAST NIGHT AND DIDN'T HAVE TO SHANK ANYONE TO GET THE EQUIPMENT I WANTED TO USE! I still vastly would have preferred to go in the morning and start my day right, but I'm glad I got that in whatever the circumstances. I had to cut some things out of my workout because as I believe I've said before, my hamstrings have been really tight and angry that I'm working out again. They were able to loosen up enough to squat and deadlift, but the accessory work I was intending to do (lunges and good mornings) had to be scrapped because no way in hell was that going to end well. As it is I almost voted no on the heavier sets of deadlifts because while the motion of deadlifting was fine, my hamstring was being all tweaky when I was trying to get into position so my normal habits in getting set up had to be adjusted accordingly. After a long epsom salt bath and stretching last night, they are doing a bit better so far today, though I do not have high hopes that they won't get back on the cranky train by tonight (my DOMS typically show up 24 hours after a workout).

That said: What suggestions do people have for convincing hamstrings to quit their whining, loosen up, and get with the program? This is incredibly frustrating as all the soreness EVERYWHERE else has calmed down or gone away. It is just my hamstrings that are holding on to this tightness for dear life. So far I have tried: working out (getting the blood flowing and all), yoga, warm bath and stretching, lax ball all with only temporary relief if any relief at all. I know that with time they will shut up, but I want to do what I can to encourage them do to so on the sooner side.

Workout! (all in lbs)

Back Squats

     10x45

     5x55

     5x65

     5x80

     5x90

     5x105

Deadlifts

     5x65

     5x75

     5x85

     5x100

     5x115

     5x130

3x10 sets of Plank Jacks and Leg Raises

I can't wait to really be back in the game without this hamstring bullshit to deal with, aside from its anger, the deadlifts felt pretty easy, even at 130. This makes me feel pretty confident because prior to taking over a month off because I pretend to be Slacker McSlackerface, I was at 155 for 3. With over a month off and not having been anywhere near that weight since (last time I deadlifted was just at 95 for sets of 5), a jump to a weight much closer to that point did not feel heavy or like bad decisions. So I expect I can be back at 155 pretty quick ONCE MY HAMSTRINGS GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER.

i usually just keep trucking on. i do stretch out my hamstrings while i brush my teeth, 30s for each leg. just bring it up to the bathroom sink and hang out there :D looks totally weird but whatevs. if they're particularly i whiny i'll foam roll them but as you said, it's temporary relief until they just shut up.

Yeah, mine are whiny enough that were I to bring my foot up onto the counter, I would not be able to straighten my leg. They need a large dose of calm the fuck down and shut the fuck up.
