Acting Ensign Calibre Reporting For Duty

Disclaimer: This has been a hell of a year!! Plus, keeping it positive here :)

This is going to be a respawn of Intergalactic (and sometimes inter-dimensional) proportions:D I have been on a roller coaster of a year and with 40 right around the corner, it's time to really get back on the ball and get myself in shape in all ways. This is something I really need to commit to in a major way. So, without further ado (and with more fleshed out details coming very shortly), here comes the challenge!!!

This challenge (and for several more to come afterwards) will be themed Star Trek (Next Generation and beyond). Why? Mostly because I've figured out my answer to the whole Star Wars/Star Trek debate and yes, the winner is Star Trek for so many reasons. So, with a definite rewatch of ALL of TNG, DS9 and Voyager (maybe Enterprise but I've seen it recently enough), we are going to start this one with becoming the embodiment of our favorite acting ensign of the 1701-D, Wesley Crusher. He learned much of what he knows and believes in because of the positive role models he had so what I will do is try to embody some of the traits that they have including:

Being Stronger like Worf!

Worf, even in his earliest days aboard the Enterprise, was very stalwart and strong learning what he could of the ship as a junior officer then to his promotion to Chief of Security. Pushing his boundaries, becoming better than he was before, usually with his calestetics programs on the Holodeck.

In that respect, I need to make sure that I am making myself stronger. Less physically frail, less weak in the knees (literally), and able to do more on a day to day basis. So straight up, what I need to do is take just 10-15 minutes daily to do some kind of activity. Initially I'm looking to do things that will focus on the arms and core. Daily, I can do it!!

Being Smarter like Data!

Data, oh my wonderful mechanical man!! He was smart clearly due to his positronic brain and being an android though new experiences were always some of the best teachers.

This plan will focus on getting back into reading and not of the fictional variety. Technical magazines, non-fiction of various subjects (history, technology), that is what I will delve into with this goal. I plan to find a book to read through the entire challenge and magazines as I can but at least one a week.

Being Emotional Braver like Troi!

large_Troi.jpg

Troi has always worn her emotions on her sleeve considering that she feels the emotions of just about anyone and anything out there being a Betazoid. Even in the throws of some of the most terrifying adversaries and entities she has been stronger than the largest Klingon and braver than the most daring Starfleet officer.

I have had quite the emotionally baffling year so my goal is to be more aware of my emotions, my feelings, and my effect on others in my life. In a more concrete way, I will show my gratitude on here in the form of a devotion to someone or something that has been transformative for myself, whether it be something that I've done within the year or more recently (needless to say, especially to my friends here, we've got a lot of catching up to do).

The challenge starts today, ENGAGE!!!

Stardate 39839.9 (Day 1)

Acting Ensign Calibre here!!! It's about damn time I got off my rear and got back here! :P The powers that be (myself) finally gave me a field promotion to Acting Ensign so that I can really get out there and explore the ship and crew and really learn what needs to be done to be a more well-rounded person.

l need to take this all one day at a time and one day at a time is perfect to effect change. Less than a day and I was able to get this challenge formed well and get it started.

Worf: Ran through crunches, reverse crunches, side leg lifts and hip bridges x 20, a good 10 minutes of working out on that core area.

Data: Got some issues of Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, and Air And Space magazines. Might look towards getting a book by Michael Lewis (Moneyball) or something historical. Definitely some light reading tonight before bed.

Troi: So many things to be grateful for lately but going to hit the most important one: I am beyond thankful and grateful for my parents. My mom and dad have been there for me for nearly 40 years (whether I was asking for help or not) and they have been doing it without any reservations. They are helping me out more now than I have ever allowed them to because of my own pride.... and I couldn't be happier for their help.

3 for 3 on Day 1! I can definitely handle that. Core work today means I'll hit up my arms tomorrow, with some luck I could possibly hit up a bookstore on the way to work tomorrow and more things to be grateful for are coming daily.

Great work out there on your Day 1's as well!!!

Stardate 39842.8 (Day 2)

Holy moly!! First full day as an acting Ensign and I feel beat. The work load was more straining than I expected but this ship needs all hands ready to go at all times. I know I'm up for the challenge and I'm sticking to it.

It was quite the day today. It was a fairly simple day at work but felt very tiring. Might have been because I was up early catching up on the season finale of Westworld or the most recent episode of The Librarians. Though I'm glad that I didn't get to doing my workout this morning because it was definitely an after-work kind of workout. Looks deceptively easy but I think it'll work really well for toning the upper body:

So today we had some definite accomplishments:

Worf: Went through 3 sets of the above workout which felt really good on the arms when I finished (minus a little popping sound in my elbow at a point or three).

Data: Ran a little later heading out this morning so didn't get to stopping at the bookstore. Now I do still have that book on the Greek that I didn't start reading yet so I might go with that.... but I still want to head to the store and look around.

Troi: Today I'm grateful for one stray comment given to me and then the courage to do what I've done recently. By this I mean that my former boss and I had talked a couple of months ago about how people in our hometowns were nicer and more pleasant to talk to which gave me the thought to put in a transfer request to go from Indiana back home to Metro Detroit. I wasn't expecting any kind of response very quickly, thinking it might be up to a year or more before I got a chance to move but amazingly I got my chance and started at the new store on Halloween. So now I've been there a little more than a month and I've gotten really lucky with the team that I'm now working with. I am very grateful and amazed that I had the courage to take this leap.

2 for 2 days!!! Tomorrow will be an early day, more catching up with you all, maybe a stop at the bookstore (that'll probably be Thursday though), getting down with more ab workouts, and really taking stock of the joy and happiness that is in my life. :D
