karinajean rehibernates | is still a bear

Last challenge was a hot mess. I tried! but things came up. I think I did reasonably well considering:

* a week 1 emergency health thing (not me) and a trip to florida to mug with my sick daddy-o (still doing awesome, by the way)

* a week 2 presidential election that resulted in me being actually depressed for the first time in literally forever, and requiring lots of quiet self care

* a week 3 where we had the kids every day b/c of their mom's work travel, impinging on our planned gym time for goals, and

* a week 4 with a planned and much enjoyed visit to iceland and england instead of american thanksgiving.

and then I wrapped it up with

* a week 0 that was all about me traveling to houston for training - which meant wednesday I left the house at 3AM and I returned at 1AM on Sat. ZOMG TIRED.

So ima just gonna do that last challenge all over again. additional bonus facts/exciting conditions: my husband lost his job last week, it's the holidays, we have the kids all during Week 1.

(sidebar: losing the job is not terrible. We are going to evaluate our ability to send him to school full time spring semester to continue working towards his goal of shifting careers into shoe design and shoe manufacture.)

* go to the gym. schedule it in for at least 2x a week at the gym. My husband is in still, and maybe this will be doable even when we have the kids all the time in the mornings, because he can just go home to make sure that Thirteen has managed to get out the door in good time. I had said that next challenge I want to start the dojo weight lifting, but I'm going to give myself until january. Even though it will make me look like that january gym starter guy. but whatever.

* learn the pull-ups. I'll be 40 in April. KEEP PRACTICING. this looks like: hanging from a bar and pulling in my shoulders every day I'm home. move on to negatives. pull-up assist machine / bands are available but for now I need to focus on grip strength and getting a little movement in from hanging. the key is REGULAR.

* track my food more carefully. extra double important during the holidays! track every day. Don't ever have to catch up the next day.

* check in on my goals!  hard learned obvious lesson of the summer/fall: if you don't check your goals, you won't actually do anything to achieve them. DO THE THING WITH THE GOALS. get something written down every day, if you can.

regular stuff will occur, that being: running outside when I can, doing tkd 2-3x a week, dojo saturdays etc. Ideally I'm active 5-6 days a week. I picked up a discounted hulahoop class on cyber monday, and it would be amazing if I worked in more stretching/yoga.

OK, got it? SECOND VERSE JUST LIKE THE FIRST A LITTLE BIT LOUDER AND A LITTLE BIT WORSE.

Woo girl.   Sounds like I could take a page out of your book.    I was debating on tracking or just not eating like a jerk.    Still haven't decided yet- but hmm, you're making me lean toward yes.

Following along as always my twin!

I mean, I pretty much hate tracking, but it's way more effective for me, even when I eat a million things because it's the holidays.

Well, I was in some intensive training, so I didn't have much of a chance to get out of the office. I did make a point to stop and grab some kolaches on the way to the office on friday morning... and they were delicious!

That is one of the things that comes up when you google Assassin Bear.  He is holding a concealed fish instead of a weapon? Maybe? And he's in the Animus, I think.

I'M IN. I'm discovering that pull-ups really are one of those magic things that doesn't take skill, and you'll actually get better at it purely by practicing on the regular.

Weeell, I'm going to argue against that pull-ups don't require skill. If you can't perform a movement, any movement, you're lacking in skill. You might need to develop other attributes as well, like strength in this case, but you're always going to be lacking in skill. Sure, if you're already strong enough to do at least a few pull-ups, moar practice will automatically lead to moar gains. But if you don't know how to do pull-ups you need to for example learn how to activate the muscles correctly, like how to pull with your lats and not just with your arms and shoulders. Which takes skill, and mindful practice. I think particularly the first part of the pull is most important part to practice correctly, at least I can notice a big difference in muscle recruitment and power if I focus on a strong setup. Plus if you treat pull-ups as a skill they will end up looking prettier. :) But yeah, I agree that the more you practice them better they will become, but that's true for any movement.

On a different note - I love the concealed fish. Nasty weapon that.

Your point is well taken, Ms. Hat. As usual, I spoke imprecisely and with wild stabs at the truth. What I meant, of course, is that I'm coming to believe that this is one of those fundamentals that anybody (even me) can get better at with dedication.

I AM SUCH A BEAR.

I wish I spent last week hibernating.

RogueLibrarian I dropped the ball on checking in for daily pull-up practice. Can we start over? week2 rally?

Week 1 Excuses:

* we had the kids every day so could not ditch them early in the morning and go to gym with husband as per best laid plans

* I had 2 holiday parties (thursday and friday)

* I worked kinda late all the other days

* I never wrote down a plan except for TKD and therefore SURPRISE didn't accomplish anything.

Things I didn't do:

* go to the gym. Nope.

* learn the pull-ups. Pretty much Nope. Did hangs on Tuesday for like 30 seconds.

* track my food more carefully. EXTRA NOPE. I looked at this today and I hadn't logged anything since LAST SUNDAY!!!

* check in on my goals!  aw, nope. I did pop in mid-week and caught up with y'all, but in generally I had very little time for doing things.

So, it's Week 2. Let's start fresh.

yesterday I got up early and ran a 4-mile race with my husband. It was 25 degrees out, I hadn't run more than 2 miles since.... I don't even know when. The last time I ran 2 miles was the prior friday (12/2) in Houston on a gym treadmill. This run was pretty hilly and cold and I got the squeaky wheezes after I was done but.... I ran the whole way! and finished in, like, 39:40ish! which is under 10-min miles!

(also we stayed for the awards and I paid attention to the 40-49 bracket, because I will be there next year, and... I need to shave 5 minutes off my time to be competitive. Well. That's kind of a lot.)

I also tracked all my food!

I didn't do any hanging things though.

And, I was up way too late. The only rationale for this is that I was planning christmas knitting, which is going to become a Very Big Deal.

Today I had wanted to go to the gym with the hubs but it was snowing and icy raining, so I didn't. it cleared up unfortunately right as I was leaving to work, so here I am working.

it's christmas cookie season, I need to get exercising y'all.

Girl, it's so funny how twinsie we are.   Last week, my boss who is also into being fit and working out, was trying to encourage me to not blow off my 2nd lift day.  (I didn't.)  But the term he used... so funny, "You don't want to be a black bear do you?"    I was like... omg, KJ!  HAHAHA.

But yeah, I am super feeling it too.    Week 2 starting up now, right?  We can totally do this!   You and me.   Twinsies.  About to Kick Ass.
