Discworld Reading Club - Wyrd Sisters (Challenge #56)

Recommended Posts

just started the book yesterday! reading it on my kindle and also listening to Carpet People while I'm driving, just getting in healthy doses of pratchett to make up for lost time. he's still introducing characters but I did get to the part where Death makes an appearance. after the couple cameos in Guards Guards, I'm excited to get to one of Death's books.

For me it's somehow hard to reread the books. I first read them one year ago. Does anybody else experience this problem?

I really enjoyed reading Wyrd sisters for the first time. But somehow it's really strange to go back after reading the other books about the witches. Like in Guards Guards there is a lot of charakter development or at least you get to know them better. There are only a few books I've been reading several times. Most of them I read as a teenager. Perhaps I'm just not good at rereading. :/

Death is the best.  Death is the very best.  (I mean, there are a few other bests, too, but Death is the most adorable cinnamon roll.)

It's a little weird going from late Pratchett books to early Pratchett books.  If you read them in a rough order, they flow smoothly, but if you jump from knowing what you know thirty books in back to book #6, there's sort of a "wait, things are here?" shock.  (Especially since Pratchett was very much learning on the job and evolving a lot as he went along.  Which is awesome and led to some great things, but not really how series tend to go these days, where they try to keep tone very consistent.)

I don't think I'm quite halfway, but I do love Granny a lot, every irritating and unbending and terrifying bit of her.  And Nanny Ogg, having her debauched romp through the countryside.  And Magrat, bless her.  I'm glad she gets to be a hero in these books, because no other book would have a hero and romantic lead like Magrat, and, honestly, we're probably all more like Magrat than we want to be.

Spoilers for the first, I dunno, third of the book:

Spoiler

I'm past the acting troupe, which is an amazing scene for many reasons, between the witches hiding the kid and the crown, and the comedy genius of Granny Weatherwax completely missing the point of theater.  I'm onto the king trapping Nanny Ogg in the castle, which seems like a terrible life choice.  Except he's dead.  A terrible death choice.  So I think I'm a bit behind.

Magic 2.0 completely derailed my plans to listen to this one after Men at Arms.  (It is also comedy/fantasy with a modern spin on it if anyone is looking for a new series.  Very good. Much pleased.)

I shall do my best to jump back in next month.

Ooh Magic 2.0 looks intriguing!

To be honest, I like seeing the evolution is such contrast. It only helps hit home how even geniuses like Pratchett who are renowned for their style took time and practise to get where he got to. So even if you write books or do other things that are pretty terrible, or need development, or whatever else, practise really does help! Just write another 40 books :P

agreed on all counts haha! loved Granny's reaction to theatre and the ultimate decision that yes, this will be a good place for tomjon. i also love how nonplussed Nanny is about everything and her whole stint in the castle was just great. it had the feeling of something you'd see Vin Diesel do in current action movies when the enemy thinks they have him trapped... but here it's an old woman looking for her cat... if that makes any sense... lol

Wait'll you see Magrat and Granny separately try to storm the castle looking for Nanny Ogg.  Both are outrageous.

Oh I did! (actually finished the book yesterday :D ) just didn't want to give away any spoilers.

i could see correlations in the duchess' speech and vetanari's speech at the end of guards guards actually. except you like Vet... and the duchess, well, that was a great way to wrap her up.

That's what I love best about the Witches books.  They're really hardcore action stories, but genuinely written for women, and non-idealized women at that.  It's not like Hot Assassin Barbie wearing a leather catsuit and acting tough (not that there's anything wrong with that, although it's a bit overused when it's the token girl in a movie).  They're action stories for two elderly women and a really drippy nerd girl.  And they still have action and fighting and love scenes and going undercover and spying and prison breaks and all sorts of crazy shit.  It's fantastic, and super-rare.

This made the Shakespeare nerd in me so happy!

It is an absolutely unholy mess of Shakespeare, in the best way.  (And their next book is an unholy mess of Disney and other pop-fantasy, in the best way.  The witches get super-literary books.)

I'm still working my way through this one.  It's been a heck of a month.  Anyway.  Next up is Mort, which I now hear is the one that Terry Pratchett recommended people start with.  That's where he thought he started to get the hang of the series.  Also, it has Death, who is a beautiful cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure.

A little special post-challenge addition - this is one of the (very few) books they made a cartoon out of in the '90s.  It's an odd one, and I wouldn't say it's as good as the book, but it's got a certain oddball charm and it's pretty faithful to the book.
