sarakingdom
I have so much red tape to deal with. So much. This will be a challenge inspired by Rufus Drumknott, Lord Vetinari's head clerk. Not one of the more exciting Discworld characters, but if you want red tape cut through, deadlines tended, and forms filled out in triplicate, he's the man to do it. Quote The door opened and Vetinari's head clerk, Drumknott, eased his way in with the silence of a feather falling in a cathedral. I'm gonna call this the meditation section of the challenge, because that is some quality silence. I would like to cultivate some mental silence like a feather falling in a cathedral. Recurring tasks: Meditate daily, at least six days a week (5 pts each): 0/150 One-time tasks: Do one half-hour meditation: 0/10 pts Quote "Are you poised for the exiting new millennium that lies before us, Drumknott?" said Vetinari. "Are you ready to grasp the future with a willing hand?" "I don't know, my lord. Is special clothing required?" One-time tasks: Get special clothing for going to the gym at work: 5/5 pts Tracked tasks: Other special clothing-related points: Recurring tasks: Go to the gym 3-4x/week, because I bought the clothes (5 pts each): 0/90 Do something daily to grasp the future with a willing hand (5 pts each): 0/160 Quote Lord Vetinari read for a moment and said, "Hm-hm. Clear my appointments this morning, will you? I will see the guild of towncriers at nine o' clock and the Guild of engravers at ten past." "I wasn't aware they had appointments, sir." "They will have," said Lord Vetinari. "When they see this, they will have." I want to track the timeliness of my to-do list. This is sort of a fuzzy thing, because I make my list too full for one day, and have to punt things because not everything will fit. I will count that differently from punting things because I don't want to do them, or having things that seem to coincidentally repeatedly not fit onto my schedule. I have two classes of tasks, the big ones and the little ones. I think this will do it: Tracked tasks: Number of things done on time (5 pts each): Number of things done on time (1 pts each): Number of things procrastinated on (-5 pts each): Number of things procrastinated on (-1 pts each): Quote "Havelock, I appreciate that Drumknott is very competent, but he always seems to me to be a rather strange little man." "Well, it'd be a funny old world if we were all alike, madam, although I admit, not very funny if we were all like Drumknott. But he is loyal, and excessively trustworthy," said Vetinari. "Hm," said her ladyship. "Does he have much of a personal life?" "I believe that he collects different types of stationery," said Vetinari. "I have sometimes speculated that he might change his life for the better should he meet a young lady willing to dress up as a manila envelope." Tracked tasks: Points for competence at Drumknotting: Points for having a personal life: Points for an exciting use of stationery: 5 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever. sarakingdom
Slow week 0 start. So far, one point for trains, some procrastination points that cancelled each other out, which is about right, because I had an okay but not very progress-filled day, and very small amounts of personal life and grasping the future. (Meditation next.) I'm thinking of removing the expectation of week 0 points and making it a bonus week. It's less fun to treat it the same as the rest of the challenge, even if I'm easing into the new goals. 6 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever. sarakingdom
Quote Vetinari tapped the paper. "These are not stupid men. Well, some of them, at least. You have the files?" Drumknott's pale face bore for a moment the pained expression of a man forced to betray the high principles of filing. "In a manner of speaking, my lord. We really have nothing substantial about any of the allegations, we really haven't. We're running a concludium in the Long Gallery, but it's all hearsay, sir, it really is. There's hints here and there, but really we need something more solid." "There will be an opportunity," said Vetinari. Being an absolute ruler today was not as simple as people thought. At least, it was not simple if your ambitions included being an absolute ruler tomorrow. There were subtleties. Oh, you could order men to smash down doors and drag people off to dungeons without trial, but too much of that sort of thing was bad for business, habit-forming, style-lacking, and very, very dangerous for your health. A thinking tyrant, it seemed to Vetinari, had a much harder job than a ruler raised to power by some idiot vote-yourself-rich system like democracy. At least he could tell the people he was their fault. "We wouldn't ordinarily have started individual folders at this time." Drumknott was agonizing. "You see, I'd merely have referenced them on the daily--" "Your concern is, as ever, exemplary," said Vetinari. "I see, however, that you have prepared some folders." "Ah, yes, my lord. I have bulked some of them out with copies of Clerk Harold's analysis of pig production in Genua, sir." Drumknott looked unhappy as he handed over the cardboard folders. Deliberate misfiling ran fingernails down the blackboard of his very soul. --Terry Pratchett, Going Postal 2 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever. I took about half the day off. All this RL stuff is being pretty draining. I think part of my Drumknotting is going to need to include the occasional full day off, if I can swing it (which, increasingly, I probably can... soon, anyway). Also, I know my gym score looks bad. The deal is, work hasn't issued all my IDs and passes yet, so I don't have full access to the building. So most of my exercise is coming from walking. (And, honestly, I'm so close to being in a permanent state of recovery right now that I sort of feel lucky to get enough sleep, eat a healthy meal, and get a few miles of walking in.) So I may refactor that score later in the month, or I may work out extra later in the month for points, or just rely on my Drumknotting for loot this month. Whatever. It's an unsettled month. It is what it is, you know? Tonight was a gorgeous walk home from the bus stop. The air smelled great. And it was almost light. I have twelve Drumknott tasks to complete this challenge, which is at least three a week. So far, I'm on track this week. Meditation is the next thing I should get on, because it should fit in so easily, and instead I'm just missing it or falling asleep during it, which I never do. 2 Quote I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever. Scenes aren't fleshed out where they should be, places where there should be prose with jokes are just summary, bits of it are sort of disjointed outline, and a lot of the characters have places where they seem sort of OOC, often in a way that seems like it's related to his illness. (Like, they lose an emotional filter they should have, as if they're being written by someone who's lost some of his own emotional filter.) There are parts of it that would have made a really good book.
