Ah, Nerd Fitness. I see you havn't changed.

So, this is going to be a long post - so I'm going to split it up into the two parts; Past and Present. The Past stuff is important, because I've been here for quite a while (signed up 3 years ago!), but I've been... away. The Present is the challenge itself. I'd recommend you read the Past stuff as well; the story is pretty... well, have a read. See what you think.

I'll be grading myself week by week. 12 points per week, losing points per challenge focus if I do badly.

Traditionally, I write a story into this, give myself a character. That might happen later. Have to decide between fantasy, sci-fi, or fitting into the Nerd Fitness universe (since it seems to be growing!).

Have a read, keep in touch!

Present (the Challenge)

Body is the physical stuff, the stuff we know - exercise and diet. Worth 4 points.

  • Bodyweight Workout to get me back into the game, doing it 4 times a week. Fairly simple;
    • Push ups (wide, close and standard) - 20x3, +5/week
    • Leg raises - 20x3, +5/week
    • Pull ups had to go, because I don't trust the integrity of my door frame. I'll find a replacement by week one!
  • Diet needs a bit of work too - no more junk food (even when theres no other choice), no more unhealthy snacks (really have to find some healthy ones I like. Cucumber!), no more milk in the coffee, and less coffee. Also, no more soft drinks! Soda and lemon juice. Oh, and less alcohol. Much, much less alcohol.

Mind mainly concerns my enjoyment of philosophy and science. Worth 4 points.

  • Stoicism - my philosophical flavour of choice. I'm going to spend some time every day reading Stoic texts and working on them, writing out the most poignant parts and reflecting. Probably going through Epictetus' Discourses. Plus, I'm going to attempt meditation every day, even though Im terrible at meditating, haha - either Stoic meditation, or Buddhist, zazen style.
  • Study even though I've finished uni, I'm going to keep learning! The plan is to read one journal article a week, and try learn some computer coding! Surely theres some free courses out there.

Self revolves around my own happiness and personal growth - honestly, this is going to the hardest part. Worth 4 points.

  • Writing - I'm going to try write a small piece every week. No set story, so set characters, setting, plot or medium; just stretch some artistic muscles.
  • Travel - I have never travelled! So I'm either going to Melbourne this year, or, if I can afford it' Scotland. I... need to go home. Need to go back to where I know what's going on. I miss the forest, amongst other things. EDITED to fit better - Get a house, done and done!

Past
So I'll start with 2016, because... holy crap. It has been one of the worst years of my life to date. So I graduated from university! Finally, after 4 years, I got my BSc. in Laboratory Medicine, specialising in Histopathology, Cytology and Haematology (cancer diagnosis and bloodwork, effectively). After failing one of my final exams - the reason for which will come later. So, I got the resit and finally passed all the exams, even though the chance of getting a job is minimal because Government freeze, terrible final grade and other such maladies.

Those who know me (Im back, guys!) will also know my love of bartending - I've been a bartender for about 4 years now, I love it to bits and its great having a hobby I get paid for. However - I've left 3 bars this last year, on fairly-good terms, and I'm now in a steady, boring restaurant job. Pays the bills, at least, but it's not exactly stoking my passions.

Then the big f**k up with last year. I broke up with my long term (7 years) girlfriend, because of anxiety and depression issues. It was the right thing to do, and I've been given this opportunity now to become the awesome Loopus I know I can be, but never really had a chance to become. Its hard, and I'm terrible at being by my lonesome without a 'pack'. but it will be good. Which is sort of why I'm back with NF, really!

So basically - 2016 can go suck a di*k. 2017 is my year.

You and 2017. (Obviously, you're the dude)

Oh yeah. And this year is gonna be that pinata, but filled with health and happy stuff, instead of candy.

As another note, thanks to @Houses challenge, I'm going to be using Bullet Journaling - or trying to - to start recording my daily events and things I did! Problem is, I don't really do much, so I'll have to see if its worth it. Might tie into the writing goal, though, and Stoics always recommend keeping a journal... notebook shopping time, maybe! :D

You know your pack is here. We've missed you friend, good to have you back.

P.S. Feels like 2017 will be the year of Bullet Journalling, I've gotten into it myself and apparently it's the latest craze on the boards.

Bro!

So glad you're back here in the forums and in IRC!

Admittedly, I don't think any of us had a great 2016 (Read: Brexit and Trumping Brexit); but I think we're pretty determined to get rid of that past and change the future.

Also, let's compare notes on the journaling; maybe we find something else to make it better for each of us?

Welcome back old friend :)

Don't think we've met before but welcome back! (I'm also coming off of a semi-hiatus - joined back in 2012 and have been mostly inactive)

I love the way you split up your challenge into Body, Mind, and Self. To me it looks like you are doing a lot of stuff, but it seems you have a good plan for all of it. Following for the awesomeness :)

Oh my Peruvianchucknuggets, there's just so much here that I'm going to stalk you like a crazed Bieber fan!

Stories and writing and Scottish forests!

Peruvian...haha. Stalk away! First story will be a couple days out, and is probably going to be crime/sci-fi.

We havn't - pleasure to meet you, Gar! I do have a plan, and I don't think i see it as being a lot because this is just things that I want to fill a rather empty life with, to get back to how I used to be, which was when these things were all second Nature - but maybe I am doing too much, we'll see with the challenge.

Daily Quick Log Thing; 2/1

- Started story

- Exercise done! Challenge edited to reflect reality of how fit I am :P

- Commented and followed on 3 other peoples posts

x - Dinner wasn't the healthiest - duck, hoi sin sauce, fatty and sweet, but eh, was also delicious

I GOT A FRIKKIN' HOUSE! I've never lived out of home, Im 22 and live 45 minutes away from my current job, and any other job I've had in the past 3 years, so it really sucks. I'll be living with these 2 awesome, nerdy people and their 2 dogs, really near the city. So happy.

Daily Quick Log Thing - 3/1

  • Exercise done, and challenge modified to reflect my actual physical state, not the one buoyed by Nerd Fitness based motivation, haha!
  • Writing done! You can find the first piece here - and introduction to Turanka, and my first little flick of scifi for a while. Its short, but I like it!
  • Stoicism read! Todays lecture by Epictetus was on how to maintain a proper character, no matter the circumstance. Less of his usual bitchy humour; quote of the day would be "...to determine what is reasonable or unreasonable, not only do we have to form a judgement about the value of external things, but we also have to judge how they stand in relation to our own specific character." Stoics are big on their judgements and accepting/rejecting negative thoughts before they even get close to influencing our Self.
  • Househunting! Seeing 2 tomorrow.

Iiinteresting! That's unusual around here but it makes sense. Once you have the roommates, shop for a habitat that suits ya'll, and the little dogs too.

Pretty much, Laghail, because we're all after something pretty long term, its better to go this way round instead of the more common "we have a place, lets put people in it!"

Also RedStone that is perfect and I'm sending it to the housemates :'D

As someone who has lived the "we have a place let's find some roommates" way I think your idea sounds much smarter. Some roommates are awesome, some random ones are... let's say a little out there.

Best of luck with the house hunting!!

Welcome back, bro. I mostly use my bujo for to-do lists and tracking how those are doing. It works pretty well for that, so that's always an option if you are feeling kind of stuck on what to write. :)
